Beistellpferd geschafft!

Today The Black One came to Finally Farm. We got a companion pony.

I should say, Baasha got him. A 30 year old pony friend.

Within about 10 seconds, I'd lost Baasha. The Black One owns him now.

Funny thing is - so far the two have not even touched. It's like some sort of old horse etiquette? Too dignified? I have no idea. The Black One just put his head down into the grass and Baasha stood about 3 meters away, pawing the air. Pawing, pawing, and this means he's somewhat frustrated, I know, but what for?

Perhaps Baasha expected more feeling from his new owner. More eye contact? Not an ear has been tilted, the two of them are together, but apart.

The Black's owner led him around our property, and I took Baasha by the flymask to follow. Immediately there was much nickering from Baasha. He was VERY concerned that his pony might go too far. There is no such thing as TOO close for Baasha and his friends.

The man laughed and said "You've lost him." I said, "I know."

The pony went into the stall and noticed the enormous trough of hay and started munching. Baasha was behind me, just outside, and as soon as I stepped aside, Baasha plowed through the opening and stood in the stall next to the pony.

We hope that they can share the trough, I've seen Baasha share feeders before and I hope it works out. Baasha was not in the mood for hay, he had other things on his mind.

The owner said, "This is a non-incident. There is really nothing to observe here or worry about."

A non-incident is the best way I can describe it. Except for Baasha's pawing the air.

My man said, "They look about the same size!" Baasha is 15.1. Pony is 13.1. Funnily, looking at the two of them side by side, I swear on a stack of Apocryphas, that pony wears the same blanket size---a 68": )

***

When the horse trailer first pulled up, the pony started neighing inside. I was like "oh boy" and Baasha ran to the gate and strained over to smell him. Baasha said, "For ME? For ME!!"

An hour later my man and I visited them and my man tried to get them closer. He held a carrot between them. Baasha deferred to the black. Hmph, oh well. But they did touch noses over my man's hand: )

I'd promised Baasha this day would come for a long time. I promised him day after day, "We're working on it." (Finding him a buddy.)

And knowing this black pony would come, this week took very very long for me. I kept telling Baasha as I groomed him, "Very soon you won't be alone anymore."

I hope and pray so. He deserves it. And so begins the trial period....

Yeah! Good for Baasha! Good for the Black!

The gal who bought little Jackson (our yearling) also adopted a pony about that size from the local rescue, to be his companion (especially important for a baby going to a new place). They've been together here since Friday, and, altho Jackson still calls out to the "old herd," they seem to be bonding. They'll go to their forever home on Thursday...

What a cute little pony! I hope all goes well with Baasha and the pony, so far it sounds like they are doing very well!
Thanks for the sweet comment about my float plane ride! I am really glad you enjoyed it and the pictures! I took a lot of pictures, and it was hard deciding which ones to put on there! Of course, some didn't turn out due to the plane moving all over! Seattle is definitely a beautiful city from up above! I prefer looking at it that way, I am a country girl and prefer to stay out of the city! LOL!!

Oh how cute! I am so happy for Baasha :D

Your man is wearing long sleeves. Is he just being German or did it start to cool off?

Kate, I hope it works...

Evensong, your buyer understands horses - that's good: )

Fourwilkies, omgosh me too.

Paint Girl, I hope so. Things took a turn for the worse this evening and I may be lookin at 2,000Euros to fix it....

Funder, omgosh I wish you could be here to see. He's wearing that, and yesterday at his Oma's 89th Bday party, everyone was wearing jackets, and I sat there in a tank top, shorts, and sandals. Of course, they made fun of my slight sunburn telling me that is why I'm not cold. Right, I keep a little sunburn so I don't need to put on a sweater. *lol* Oops, they read this. Since this land is all about Celsius, I cannot tell you how hot it actually is.

Melissa, Jason, I may need your help soon....

Are you easing the pony onto the new grass or did it come from the same type of pasture? I always worry about extreme changes in eating habits and wean the horses off old hay/pasture adding a little bit of new hay/pasture in at a time.

I don't recall the work I was doing in changing the pecking order or my reasoning for it. I know it involves warning off the other horses while you feed one horse first, let it in or out of the stall first, lead it through the gate first, etc. It's just a matter of you deciding which horse should be at the top of the pecking order instead of letting the horses decide.

Oh, I love that Black one Lytha! Baasha sounds so funny too...pawing the air in display of wanting something and talking it outwardly!

The pony looks really cute. I think it's so important for a horse to have a companion, even if it's only a goat or something, but preferably their own kind. There are a few singletons around here and when we ride past they either look really sad or whinny like crazy. You have so done the right thing. Within two weeks you won't be able to separate them.
