Is this a thing?

Remember when I was annoyed to find a new product in my horsey catalog - spur shields for horses' sides? Well today on YouTube I found 2 horses with spur sheild haircuts.

No kidding.

Sure enough, in one video, when the owner got on to ride, that's exactly where her spur was.

So, is this a thing outside of Germany? I would be embarrassed to have such blatant proof that I cannot seem to stop injuring my horse when I ride.

I've seen it before. Some horses are incredibly sensitive to spurs, to a degree that has absolutely nothing to do with overuse of the spurs. So keeping extra hair there to protect their skin makes sense to me.

My own horse's skin is not sensitive at all. I could spur him all day with no sign. Other horses get rubs from correct use. I don't think spur marks automatically correlate to abuse. They're not great, but I'd look more closely at a rider's overall horsemanship before jumping to assumptions.

I do agree with Amanda that some horses are more sensitive. Irish will get a mark from a hard glare, I swear. Carmen I could spur her heart and she wouldn't show a mark (not that I would do that). That said, I do agree that the spur patches look pretty awful.

Here is something even crazier to prevent spur marks .., electric shock spurs. https://www.worldofshowjumping.com/en/News/GRANDPRIX-reveals-that-Andrew-Kocher-is-suspected-of-using-electric-spurs-during-FEI-competitions.html?fbclid=IwAR06PfOBKBCcMsKkbxX1TquyuS3ZZ4qbXqQ9IbMcCf8DmwBtCdbjSJgtKLY
