It's that time of year again. I heard something different on our little street and sure enough, a moving solid mass of wool was heading this way.
The littlest one, like Misty in the channel, couldn't keep up and so the shepherd carried him.
By now the sheep know the routine, and the dogs are almost superfluous.
Baasha saying "What's going on here!"
They cross over the field across the street from our house...
..and then down the bank across the road into our field.
The mother found her baby, look how she's watching over him.
They poured like a wave onto our field and put their heads down immediately and began scarfing up the tasty grass. The shepherd said ours was at the perfect stage that the sheep love.
Soon after this photo the littlest one plopped down and fell asleep. Little Misty.
I was so happy to have one final trim after only 2 hay cuttings this year. The sheep trim everthing just like a mower, fertilize evenly, aerate a bit with their little hooves, and next spring's grass is so much better. I love the sound of them rapidly tearing up grass!
Baasha looked, and then went, "Oh yah, the sheep again." Since they jump away from him when he moves, he is not worried about having 300 fieldmates suddenly.
I ran out there first thing in the morning to see them and try to count them.
When I would see them resting I'd yell, "Get up sheep! Get up and eat! Quit lying around!"
At night a thousand eyes stared green into our flashlights. Eerie!
They were here 3 days and wow, what a great job they did. I love sheep!

How amazing to see that many sheep crammed into the space on the road. You are right, it looks like a solid expanse of wool. For some reason it reminds me of a glacier moving. The littlest lamb was so cute!
I love how casually the shepherd carries the little one.
What a great post. I loved the pictures and the narrative -- I felt like I was there watching them cross the road into the field.
A dreamscape. Just so lovely. Glad Baasha found someone he can boss around. Maybe you could add a sheep to the pasture as a companion animal. :)
I vote for the lamb. :)
how neat it must be to see a flock of sheep in your pastures! Great photos- I love the lamb.
