What to wear

First thank you for all the sweet comments about my finally finding work in Germany. I still can't believe it myself. Could I really be a contributing member of this society soon? Full on assimilation? And could we afford a dryer soon? And do you wanna know how many vacation days Europeans actually get? (I won't say..)

Today I spent 3 hours going through my closet trying to figure out what I have that is business attire and what sadly no longer fits. (This Ikea photo shows what ours looks like, except ours is not orderly, nor filled with mostly beige. Did you know closets do not exist in Germany? Everyone must buy a wardrobe for clothing.)

I did something I've never done before and highly recommend - take every single thing out and pair everything up into perfect outfits. Normal women probably do this often. In my case it meant finding the perfect base for the layers - I have a lot of sheer/crochet/lacey shirts for layering.

My husband said I had a lot of clothes when he first met me. I think he's right now that I've organized everything. I am amazed - Taking advantage of every single piece, I can wear a different outfit for 21 days without having to hit Tshirts. AAH! Is this Lytha?! I'm not really sure how long I can go without wearing a Tshirt.

These clothes still smell like my closet in West Seattle cuz I have not had the chance to wear a lot of them. Lots still had West Seattle pet hair on them. Ah, memory lane..

I had to check each outfit with my husband first. I used to tell my sister I could never live without her cuz I wouldn't know how to dress, but I think my husband can help. He thumbs-downed a couple color combinations at least, and told me which pants to use with certain tops. It was really fun to find new layering combos - hot pink and sheer black go great together!

I threw three holey pairs of shoes into the trash (that was hard, but they were almost unwearable falling apart). I did not throw away my big thick clunky shoes that add over an inch of height. I know the Internet says not to wear them, but I like to be taller and I hate high heels. Am I the only one?

In the depths of my Ikea Pax wardrobe (Entrance to Narnia, we call it), I found my

  • electrolyte syringes - I'd been wondering where those were.

  • jeans that don't fit me but I won't toss them because I dream of fitting them someday.

PS - If you like Ikea, or if you hate it, do you know about Ikea Heights - a show filmed entirely inside a Burbank, CA Ikea? *lol*

Hi you!
I am so happy for you...bet Germans are a happy lot with many more vaca days- huh!
That is an excellent thi8ng to do..and No, I am not normal enough to have done that "wardrobe syncing" before, save vacation time packing.

Love the memories in the scents and visual pet hairs you had... "~'

We have no actual closets in this old house either...the time it was built, there was a tax on rooms..closets constituted as rooms. We have 4 large Wardrobes in the house!

Just got mail from you!

a tax on bedrooms?
interesting!

i know in seattle a room is not considered a bedroom unless it has a closet. so people had to say "office" about those other rooms.

according to those rules we have zero bedrooms.

i had no idea that you had the same issue! so, did you get your narnia entrance via ikea or...?

Yay!!! Congratulations!

It will be great to get back into the rythmn of work. Love the closet. Mine is a nice big walk in that curves around and has a huge dead corner. Bad design on my part...

Hope your new employer realizes we are going to be sacrificing a tremendous amount when you have less time to blog...

We are on a countdown..24 days until IKEA opens in Colorado!! I LOVE IKEA. I think I lived at IKEA for a few days when we were trying to outfit my office! I can't wait to spend a day (or more) 'lost' at IKEA. At least they have a great lunch!
Anyway... wardrobe stuff is fun! It is amazing how you forget what goes with what... and how many work combinations you actually have.

When do you begin your new venture?!

First, congratulations on your new job!
Second, 21 days! That's great. I hardly ever sort my clothes out. I just randomly throw things together on the spur of the moment. I'm sure my color combinations are off. I'll usually pick a solid colored top to go with a print skirt. I like bright colors, btw. A lot of my clothes are ancient. I have one dress that's at least 20 years old! But I still get compliments almost every time I wear it. It's a bright blue corderoy button front with a slighly flared skirt that goes to my knees. I wear it with fancy suede boots and a concha belt and it just works.

Hope you enjoy your new job. When do you start?

I've never been to IKEA. Like Dreaming said, we have one opening soon in Colorado. It will be fun to check it out.

You've inspired me. I wonder what treasures I could find inside my closet. Time to do a major reorg in there.

Sonja, sorry to keep deleting your comments. I wonder if you realize why *grin*.

Crystal, I was amazed at how many outfits I could come up with by combining.

Breathe, one of the things I will love: When the grocery clerks say "Have a nice weekend" it will mean something to me.

Dreaming, FV, July 15, woo!

Once Upon, this may have been my girliest post ever, but I highly recommend a reorg and taking a new look at old things - you'll be surprised by your treasures I think.

That's really smart you did that...go to H&M and get a couple staple items and you will be set! Good luck!

Well I guess I'm not normal either. I never think of pairing things together until I'm ready to head out the door. Sure do like the looks of that IKEA wardrobe. I've shopped at IKEA in Utah and in Maryland. Love all the cool stuff and we've got a lot in our kitchen and bath. But sadly the closest IKEA for us is in Phoenix, AZ, so I don't get the opportunity to shop there often.

I can't imagine not having closets, though. As a homeschooling family, shelves and closets are a must. lol!

My husband is awesome with outfits! I get nervous if dress pants aren't completely baggy and I make him check if they're too tight. And he is brilliant with color combinations. This is so embarrassing, but he buys most of my clothes. :)

Hang on to those jeans. Hope springs eternal. One time I got back into teenage jeans - then I realized that they were horribly out of style (stonewashed, high waist, tight ankles) and threw them away - but I did it!
