We are in America after a very long time - 3 years - of not being home. It's both fascinating and super freaky. I'll go into detail later but for now I want to share a quintessential American encounter.
Me, J, and my dad were standing in his front yard in rural Shelton.
A car slowly rolled down the unpaved street, window down.
Seeing us, the driver stopped and shouted,
"Have y'all seen a couple of dogs around here?"
The accent was exactly as you'd expect. My first thought was to answer, "Did you look in TEXAS?"
Later J laughed about having been called "y'all" the first time in his life. He speculated, "If only one of us had seen his loose dogs, we'd must have answered no, cuz not "all" of us saw them."
Yah, right.
I don't know if my dad fully understood why we were falling over laughing; it could be that people roll by his house regularly looking for packs of their escaped dogs.
It was a great welcome to rural America.
Then we saw our first Walmart.......

Lol... your husband's reaction was so German!
Walmart makes me shudder.
I'd love to walk in that forest some time.
Walmart I'd happily avoid forever.
When we first bought our property and began to renovate the house and build the barn, pastures and garage I used to joke that we were on the 'tour'. People would drive by and slow down to look at the progress.
Y'all can be singular or plural. For a ver large group, one uses the plural inclusive "all y'all".
As a friend from Texas explained to me many years ago, it's light years ahead of addressing a group of mixed-gender people (or even a group of women) as "you guys."
Welcome back!
Amazing photo! Too funny about y'all and the dog! We have a random dog we know is named "Bella" as we can hear the neighbor from four houses away calling and calling while she sits happily in our driveway… And eeek, Walmart, I have never gone, I would see the the parking lot was full even during the lockdown era, made me question it even more…
Oh God. You guys chose an interesting time to come visit. Though I think Washington state is handling things better than other places.
I live in Florida and y'all is very common here. It just comes natural for us.
