Sterile hoof photo

I was just saying how Mara has finally lots some fluffiness but this photo makes her look like a puffball *snap*.
You'll have to trust me I guess that she went from ~14 hands high and 10 hands wide, to ~14 hands high and 8 hands wide. She's just slightly less 3 dimensional when I look at her now. The two areas that the difference is most clear are the neck and tailhead. If you go back to April (glorious Spring!) you'll see a horse with way less hair, but with a scary amount of padding.

Here is her left hind hoof after 6 days in a virtually sterile environment. The slight yellow/green tinge is from the Rivanol (something everyone here seems to know about and I'd never heard of). You can see where the vet was exploring with a knife, and where he found the culprit just above the apex of the frog. I find it fascinating how a frog appears after regular sterilization - it makes me want to keep my horse in a germ free bubble and see what happens then. Oh well...

In contrast, the other (non-pigmented) rear hoof.

The coronary band took on the Rivanol color too.

We're down to 3 ml bute twice daily, and I did some (walking only) groundwork with her today across the street. She is moving fine at a walk, and galloping around her field like nothing ever happened. I'm anxious to see her trot again but I'll wait a few more days.

Oh my, she looks positively gaunt! :) Still don't see any ribs. So glad that her hoof is better, you must have done all the right things.

Thought about you when I read Hoge Homestead's post about saddle fitting - http://hogehomestead.blogspot.com/2014/02/saddles-long.html (starts with this post I think). It was very interesting to read.

You have a good week! Kay

Bellis is so cute in that picture!

Mara definitely looks more svelte. She is a really pretty girl.

The stuff you are putting on her hoof, is it like an antiseptic or something?

tara, i couldn't find the name for it in english or in any article written in english. my betadine probably would have worked fine.

kay, *lol* gaunt, won't that be nice: ) i keep up on connie's blog too - we crossed paths in real life.

pic, thanks, me too!

melissa, i think if you have a good eye you can tell the difference and i'm hoping for a wonderful surprise when she sheds out. the rivanol is an antiseptic, yes. i had to look it up.

I seen your post on Nuzz's blog about driving. It is a lot of fun and if you want to drop me an email, I would be glad to help you out as best as I can from afar.

so glad she is better. And the frog in that sterile environment, wow! That is an interesting side-effect.
