I had my first ride on Amja tonight. FINALLY. It was worth the wait. I was his 7th (?) ride, the second person to ride him, aside from Mr. L getting on him once. He was sure a baby, but I was expecting that. He tripped a bit but most of all was really unsure what to do with this bit in his mouth, he was all over with his head, chewing it. I just fol
lowed.
Look, he's got A.M.'s horse's "Sexy Mouth" - that endurance lady in Woodinville. Her horse was quite photographic. From what I've heard, she and her sexy mouthed gelding are not still doing endurane. His name was named something like the browser Firefox. I'll always think of her and her steed when I see a muzzle like this. How she loved that horse.
At first I misunderstood Mrs. L, that I should let the reins out, and then she told me to take contact. I was just trying to do as she wanted, but finally I understood she meant for me to keep contact. Good, cuz that's what I know to be right with young horses. Keep a light contact so they can experiment with their heads and learn what feels good.
I asked him when he'd last seen a dentist, being only 5, and she said he only had one hook and it was rasped and that was it. I wonder what else could be keeping him with a bit.
I'm SO GLAD my man was there. Because everything I said about horses, almost everything, my man had to say, "What my wife means is..." I guess I cannot talk horse yet in Germany with clarity. That sucks. All the barns I've visited, they had a hard time understanding me, and I didn't know what to do about it.
What I mean is, when I tried to describe how different endurance rides are in America, there is always a little misunderstanding. My man, this time, was right there to say, "What she means is, there are no cell towers and there are no car routes to follow the horses all day. Yes, she needs water but she carries it herself, on her horse."
"The horse should not have to carry..." I thought I understood, but before I go there, I"ll ask my man to read this and comment: )
Anyway, the ride.
He's great, just like they said. No spooking, no looking. Just a little looking when two riders on Icelandics came over the hill and talked for a while. That must have got him upset a little cuz after they left, he wouldn't walk, he would only jig.... UGH, just like Baasha. 20 some years of jigging. I'm so done with that. I was kind of nervous cuz I didn't know if the jigging would lead to something else, and since I was only the 2nd rider on him, the owner didn't know either. She was helpful. Eventually the jigging quit, thankfully.
We trotted a hill climb and it was fun. I sensed his careful baby trot and just enjoyed it. I laughed and pet his neck, saying GOOOOOOD BOYYY!! over and over and rubbign him until Mrs. L turned around and laughed at me. Yes, another German who's never heard "GOOD BOY" spoken to her horse. I think the horse knows what it means.
The German horses must adapt to my "whoa' because I'm never gonna adopt thier tongue-trill "brr" to stop/slow a horse. I just won't do it. Too bad. I say "Whoah" or "Hoh" (however you type that.) I believe the horses know the difference bewteen Germans riding them, and Americans.
If I find differently, ever...I will be sure to document this phenomenon in my blog. If my blog still exists after Google Blogger says I need to pay now.
More on this trip later. My man took a lot of videos of this horse walking under saddle. I hope to upload them to YouTube and see what experts have to say about his way of travel.

Sounds very promising. Very glad it was nice non-eventful ride on a baby.
PICTURES!!! VIDEOS!!! Must see them!!!!
I don't know this "sexy mouth" horse...do I? Hmmm.
I'm so glad you (finally) had a good ride. So. Now what?
The horse sounds sweet. Glad your DH was there to help you...
The jigging, Boo will do this of we trail ride with another horse, and I hold him up. He will trot in place...
Now, wait...what is this...paying for the blog??? if so, I guess i will start over on wordpress!!
Tara
He is gorgeous!
I cracked up when you talked about the tongue trill thing... the staff at the therapeutic riding center use that in lunging. They want all of us to use it, so we are consistent. But... I don't get it...yet!
What a beautiful boy!! Sounds like it was a good ride, in spite of the jigging. Are you willing to bring along a youngster? Even one who's so steady?
I can't imagine what the deal is with blogger. I've never heard of that before, and I've got to have at least as many photos as you--and there are plenty of folks with zillions more. I would sure a heck contact someone and find out what is happening--it almost sounds like some sort of spam-scam...
evensong,
i'm looking at young horses now because i'm not finding anything that i can afford that is older. actually i cannot afford amja so i'd have to work something out if we get that far.
apparently i've used up my max storage space with blogger's photo storing service, picassa. i've started using flickr with my blog but it's not convenient and will eventually run out of space too, so i'm at a loss. a blog without pics is no fun.
Since he is so young and green, can you work w/ a trainer and take lessons? I think this is so helpful in building your confidence and the horse's. He sho' is purty. And the jigging when the others disappeared, reminds me of my Arabians who hated to see anyone leave. It's too bad you can't ride him in an arena also.
Are there any other lookers at this horse?
He's a beaut!
I rather like my soft, outloud "and" with Subtle whoa ques. The mare finishes my sentance.
Ooou! This may be good.
Tongue trill "brrr"?
So are they saying "brrrrrrrr" out loud, like they are practicing saying "burrito" with the spanish rolled "rr", or is it a quiet "prrrr", like someone pretending to be a purring cat?
That's interesting!
Becky, it's a definite rolled/trilled r with the tip of the tongue vibrating against the front of the palate.
MMMMMmmmm burrritos.
Guess what the first food I'm gonna eat in America is? AZTECA! They have Azteca in Oregon right?
holy crap my donkey just air-raid alarm-brayed as i typed that. so loud my heart is racing. she hasn't brayed in weeks and i thought we were done with that awful noise. ok, calm down...calm..
I've never had Azteca! It shows there is one in Portland. I have to admit, there is one area I have been snobbish about, and it has been trying out the Mexican food restaurants around here. After spending so much time in Mexico with my family and eating the real stuff, even the really good joints in SoCal tended to not live up to my high standards... I'm scared to try them so far north.
I'm really easy going with other stuff, though... it's just water (I like filtered water) and Mexican food that I tend to be picky about.
Do you have your heart set on Azteca, or should I do some research and see if I can find something as authentic (also affordable) as possible?
Donkey brays scare the crap out of me too... they sound so panicked and distraught.
Becky, well, since real Mexicans don't eat anything like Azteca, I don't think you'd like it, being from CA. I am very curious though if you ever find yourself there, if you like their free-refill salsa. I think it is the epitome of salsas and I've even learned to make a very similar recipe (when I can find the ingredients - not often). I usually just fill up on the salsa (with some chips as purveyors) and then take my actual meal home. It's two meals for one price: ) They used to have great big portions, ridiculously huge, but now I'm disappointed by them, and the prices have gone up.
I guess I should ask if you've ever eaten Taco Time? I don't think they exist down south. It's fast food but really, really good. Expesive but totally worth it. Blows Taco Bell away. Now my mouth is watering and there is nothing, nothing comparable in Germany. The mexican restaurants here, if you can find them, are pathetic. They serve kidney beans as a side dish instead of pinto/black beans! And they use that salsa out of the jar that just tastes like tomato+vinegar.
"They serve kidney beans as a side dish..."
Stop.
Please, stop.
My heart is hurting for you!
I LOVE that picture of Amja!!!!! What a beautiful face. :D
Ha, my trainer does that brr thing too. She must have studied with Germans at one time lol. I say whoa or ho too though.
I can't wait to see the video! I'm so excited you had fun on him. :)
As for the photos like I said you can delete some old ones, or if you don't want to, what I considered doing when I run out of space is to make a second account with a different email and just start over there or upload pictures and link to this one like you do with flickr. It kind of sucks. I also make all of my pictures smaller than the originals before uploading them (since I put a watermark on them anyway) and that saves space.
