Finally we're getting that rain we needed last month. It is wonderful to have full rain barrels again! It feels so good to just go stand in the rain after weeks of suffering through 85-90F and 68% humidity. I like water to fall, not waft. Baasha is spending his days in the stall while the neighbor horses are out in it.
So I cleaned the entire house and made a fire because it was 57F in the house. I actually had to switch from shorts to pants!
I obviously did not know what I was putting in the ground because it goes: parsley, kohlrabi, rucola, kohlrabi, peppers, kohlrabi. Huh?
Despite replacing all the soil in the greenhouse and using calcium, I still have blossom end rot on zucchini. This is the 3rd year in a row.
These two are the same age as the ones indoors - amazing the difference in size from being outside. I will be curious to see if these do better.
My first blueberries. I put a bird net on them.
The Hostas like the clouds and rain too.
The two walnut trees are sagging down under the weight of the walnuts.
::Eva, are these the right stage for your liqueur?
Too bad I'm not fond of currants. My man has been bringing lots to work to share.
I've been feasting on the Logan berries and Josta berries every day though. The birds are sharing this year.
My first cherries. Only a handful from our tiny tree, but I was so happy to get them!
And for the very first time, I see blackberry blossoms. Not on our hang, oh no, we got them all out, but on the fencelines. I will be making pie for the first time!

The hippies are getting their lot ready for the big party that starts on Thursday. They are getting married next door so they've been weed whacking and building large tents and I think a new outhouse. They have attached a water counter on our hose and are borrowing water for the week. For the wedding Saturday they'll need electricity too so we have a power counter. (We won't ask them to pay unless it's a really significant amount.)

During a rainbreak my man and I took Baasha for a walk around the neighborhood and when we came around the corner and saw these three donkeys...
Baasha was so scared!
He wants to leave so badly but he stays attached to the ground with the greatest willpower. He stood there leaning back like this, snorting warnings to the entire zip code. He's so good to do scary things for me.
I love this expression - he's looking at me like, "Are you sure it's OK to stand in this Donkey danger zone?"
Outnumbered 3-1! You'd think it was his first time seeing a donkey.

I made the best brownies and was able to share them with people who had never had brownies before. They turned out so perfectly (that is rare for me) - slightly crispy on the outside, and chewy on the inside. It was hard saving some aside to share but worth it when I saw the looks on their faces! Imagine never having eaten a brownie!

I will leave all the gardening to you, my dear. I am so NOT a farmer in any sense of the word. I take no joy in all the hard work, although I'd gladly do all the cooking and baking with the finished products.
You mean there are people on our planet who have never eaten brownies? Are you sure? If you can get it, try making them with Hershey's Special Dark cocoa. The brownies come out almost black. I usually put in a teaspoon of instant coffee also, which makes them that much richer and darker. As we say in Texas, they're so good it'll make you slap your granny.
I'm very impressed with all your gardening! I think your crop is beautiful I love the berries. I remember doing our country walks in Germany I would leave my hubby behind picking berries along the way.
Never had a brownie I can't imagine....glad yours were a hit...people will be talking and wanting more!
Leah, there is no Hersheys here. I sure miss those cans of Hersheys topping! In fact there are also no Nestle chocolate chips (even though Nestle is Swiss, right?). Thank goodness the cocoa powder here is dark and good. I would love to put coffee in my brownies but my man wouldn't like that sadly: ( Or is it not really noticeable?
You can buy brownie mix at the store (with an American flag on it proclaiming "American Food") but I don't believe it's caught on here.
Also, Starbucks has brownies. I asked if they were imported from Seattle and they said, "England." OK then!
Frau, I saw beef jerkey for the first time in Germany! But I jumped when I saw the price - I thought it was expensive back home, this is way worse. I sadly cannot justify that price so I don't know if it's any good. But what if they take if off the market because no one buys it? Oh dear!
I've never been one to garden (brown thumbs), so I'm impressed!
I'm surprised the wedding isn't today--mid-summer solstice and all...
You'll have to send Baasha to the 7MSN for a vacation and donkey-desensitization.
As for the brownies: Do I smell a budding home business? You could market to all the local coffee shops, and then folks from all over the countryside would be clamoring for "Baasha's Beautiful Brownies" and you'd have to put a summer kitchen in the old barn, and make deliveries on a Vespa, and, and, and...
Are you sure the zucchini have blossom end rot? The picture you showed shows a lot of male flowers. They will wilt and die. Only the female flowers, the ones with a tiny zucchini behind them will turn into veggies when pollinated. The male flowers come out first and then finally, the female flowers begin. Then, usually, you can't get them to quit!
Wow scared of donkey, must be the long ears ;)
I love the looks of your gardening, so much ahead of mine. I tend to get blossem rot on my tomatoes that grow in the greenhouse, but the ones outside are fine, I dont knwo what the difference is.
Maybe the blossom end rot is from lack of air flow in the greenhouse? I had that problem here in Alaska last summer to, but I have mine outside in the garden.
I love reading your blog about life in Germany.

Dixie loves donkeys! Weird horse :)
I love your garden posts. I think I am going to put a cherry tree in my front yard!
Oh my goodness! I love brownies! Those look delicious. That's awesome that you introduced someone to brownies. They'll be spoiled forever now hehe. And the fresh cherries look amazing too.
The pictures of Baasha with the donkeys are so cute. His expression is adorable. He's so brave. :) We had a mare who was fine around donkeys if their ears were back, but if they put them forward she would rollback and bolt. Silly mare.
