We almost made 6 months without a vet visit. *SIGH* Not this again, please.
**The photos in this post are from 2009 but they illustrate a little of what we're dealing with now. (However, in 2009 we were in America so my sister-in-law had to deal with the majority of this illness alone as she house-sat for us.)**
But last night I couldn't sleep, and I stayed with him despite the fact I could do no more. His eyes were swollen horribly again just like 2009. Not bleeding yet, but working their way there.
I washed with saline, removed the eiter, and did 10 minutes of compresses with nonstop carrots to appease him for the horrible enemy - WATER - near his eyes.
I lay in bed unable to sleep and I think I understand. Last year his eyes were fine. Last year we also had no plums, apples, walnuts, nothing. 2009 we had all of those, and huge allergy issues with Baasha. There must be some plant here that attacks him.
I woke up at 5. I wanted to call the vet.
I dialed the vet at 6 something, no answer.
I waited a horrible 2 hours and got thru at 8. The vet would come by in the afternoon, she said.
I washed his left eye (the bad one) and did another compress.
Finally at 5 an assistant to our vet showed up (who the heck are you!?) and she seemed to know my horse's entire 2 year history here. She said an allergy test is very expensive, but an option. Hm....
She stained his eyes, both of them at my request, and saw the scars from 2009. No new scars, thank God. His eyes are itching like crazy - he kept rubbing his eyes on my leg last night and there is no way to tell him "Please don't!"
Baasha nuzzled her and kept trying to get closer to her, he really loves vets. He knows they want to help - or perhaps he just likes the full-on attention he gets from them.
She gave me 2 tubes of medicine - yah, the same old stuff from 2009. She said she will come by again on Monday and I am to call if anything looks worse. She will use Cortisone Monday if it's safe - that is a risky thing to do at this point. She also mentioned how sweet and good Baasha is, I said, "Yah, probably one of the easier ones to medicate." She even said he was beautiful: )
But honestly he's looking better already, just from my washing and hot/cold compresses.
This sucks that it's happening again, but one tiny positive thing: as I stood with him last night, at around 11 pm (dusk!) fireflies came out and danced all around us. Sometimes they even seemed to want to come in the stall! They are so magical, the way they move. We don't have these in my hometown, and I first saw them in DC, distracting me from the Capitol's 4th of July fireworks. I know they're bugs but they are enchanting!
Baasha is getting spoiled, a kilo of carrots per day and a thick straw bed which he doesn't want to leave - it's rainy out.
He nuzzled me and rubbed his teeth on me tonight (scary), but I think we'll manage this time.

Poor Baasha...I can't imagine how tough that must be. Our pup has horrible allergies but the green eyes yikes! I hope he is feeling better soon.
Get better quick Baasah!!
Poor Baasha! Do you think you`ll do the allergy tests (sorry my keyboard is freaking out and I have no question mark right now(
Poor guy! Have you ever tried vetericyn? http://www.vetericyn.com/
I used that stuff last year when Indigo had an allergy in her eyes and with a couple days the swelling went down. That stuff is magic I tell ya. Totally worth the price of the stuff because it literally replaces 99% of your injury ointments.
OMG, poor Baasha! But how encouraging that you got a vet assistant who already knew who he was and what's happened to him. Sucks that she was about 12 hours later than you wanted, but at least she was competent!
I'd say figuring out a possible allergy correlation is great thinking. I am a walking poster for human allergy medication, and I know Terry's Paj has allergies. She knows how to cope without drugs - he has a mask and they're very careful with his hay. Me, I cut to the drugs - I know hydroxyzine is generic and safe for horses! There's lots of options if he's got seasonal allergies.
Poor Baasha. Let's hope it cures faster this time. I like that the assistant knew all about him.
Poor Baasha! That allergy thing is the pits :o(
I hope it resolves quicker this year.
So sorry my dear heart!
Poorboy!
You really have it good..being able to stay out with him...don't think my pbo would allow me to stay over.
Your fireflys sound like they tried& succeed to cheer you!
Hope Baashsa pony is doing better today.
Kac
Poor Baasha! At least this time around you're there with him and you know what is going on so it's not quite as scary. I hope you can find the source of his allergy.
