First fire ant attack, the TJD, newly pressure-washed driveway

I almost made it through my task before the ants attacked. I was pretty cocky, kneeling down and weeding around our trout pond. I knew that if I ran into ants, they might even go up my pants and that is always terrible. However I felt the first piercing bite on my forearm and jumped up, threw my gloves off, noticed they were covered in ants, and said some kid-safe expletives. It hurts really bad. Immediately it's like being poisoned, the area becomes red like a rash, with a white bubble in the middle where the ant dug in.

I was more mad that I couldn't finish - I had cleared the brush from 3/4 of that pond after ripping out the old chain link border and all the posts, and the horrible netting that I've hated since day 1. I wrapped that fruit tree netting (not even fish netting) into a big ball and carried it up the hill. I knew from last year's doctor visits - wash the bite area right away.

I scrubbed with Dove soap and a brush, and then sat down with some Doritos to feel sorry for myself for not finishing. It was only 2:30.

Then my arm started throbbing, hand and all. My goodness will my body ever learn to adapt to this poison?

I realized I needed medicine so I put on some German wound gel and that helped immediately. The pain faded all away, whew. My arm is swollen and the skin looks like a blister but no pain!

I have no idea if they are fire ants but I must assume so from the pain. I think you will thank me that I did not take photos of my arm today.

When my man came home, I showed him my work proudly and he helped me carry up the first of the segments of chain link fence that need to be cleaned up and then recycled.

He also gave me an early birthday gift - new floor mats for the Prius.

I had asked for the driver's side mat because it was getting thrashed but all the others looked great. Well he got me a set of 4 and they are so pretty! I may be the only person who can get this excited about car mats. I'm afraid I'll have to take off my shoes to drive (jk).

Normally I'm against firm names on cars but I think on the floor mat is acceptable. I'm not doing their marketing for them by having it on the floor of the car. Except that people might read this blog and buy a car from them when they're in Wuppertal, *lol*.

The Prius was in the shop again for some little thing and they washed it again! That's twice now that they've washed our car for a service appointment. Nice.

Wanna see the service loaner car we had one night?

I had to laugh because I couldn't figure out where they put the motor in this car.

Certainly not in the front, the car ends too abruptly.

But not in the back either! Hm.

I think it's some sort of Japanese Smart Car. Of course we had to call it the TJD - Tiny Japanese Deathtrap.

Usually we say TGD - Tiny German Deathtrap. This TGD thing started when a friend of mine wanted to buy a Porche and I said "NOOOOooooo.... TGD!" (Thankfully he got that 6 series I love instead.)

I spent 12 hours this week (over 3 days) pressure washing the driveway again. Why can't we just have an asphalt driveway!? I'm starting to think, after seeing huge parking lots with brick instead of asphalt - it must be an environmental thing. They allow drainage and don't create runoff problems? I don't know but I'm really sick of cleaning every individual brick! They are mossy, and moss grows in the spaces, as well as grass and every other weed.

My wrists hurt after holding that nozzle 3 days.

I hate a brick driveway. A brick driveway is like a white horse. Or a black car. They look great for about 5 minutes. Then, most of the time, they look terrible.

Spring is so easy on the eyes. I tried to show how wonderful it is when the oak trees across the street finally start to get leaves. It all happened this week.

Your home looks AMAZING!!! I hope that the driveway can stay somewhat clean for you after all that hard work. For more than five minutes that is!! ;)

Thought of you today as I puttered about outside. I'm learning (self taught no less) how to use the weed whacker and -- drum roll please-- the new fangled lawn mower. (The push mowers I used as a kid were so simple. This new thing the in laws got?? Yeeeaaahhh..... umm.... not!!)

Carrot Bassha from me!

Anon- alaska!?!! my dream is to one day see alaska.

Aarene, we had a day of rain/hail/sun that switched roles every 5 minutes and i was so frustrated but yet happy that some precipitation was finally feeding our plants. without insulation it was deafening in the stall with baasha (hail). we need to get that stuff up! spring break starts tonight, woo!

SprinklerBandit, i'm one of those people who thinks the more metal around me in a crash, the better. i always loved volvos for their super safety. volvo. be safe.: )

Mrs Mom, oh thank you! i hope so too. tell me about your weed whacker experience. everytime i try to use ours i get splattered all over the face, arms, torso, legs, basically i splinter myself with weeds and i cannot even see (thru my safety glasses). it's painful! what am i doing wrong???? i will carrot the horse for you tonight.

I know you hate it, but it is more lovely than asphalt.

When I saw the picture of the loan car I thought: "Poor Lytha having to pedal that around". Does it really have an engine?

The tarmac on my drive is so old and fragile that I'd be afraid to use a pressure washer on it!

It's a beautiful driveway, but I understand the white horse reference.

Wow, you have fire ants in Germany, too? By the sounds of the bites, that's exactly what they are. I guess they are everywhere.

When ever I get stung--most recently when a bee and I happened to cross paths when it had been drinking from a bird bath, I immediately get vinegar on the sting. The sting venoms are neurotoxins and strong alchaloids, and the acidic nature of vinegar helps to neutralize them. Works wonders, I guarantee!

Your place is SO pretty! I love it!!!
Sorry to hear about your fire ant experience. Those things are NASTY. I got them up my pants once. Never seen a person take their clothes off so fast, lol. And run!
Love the lil smart car too. They are death traps though, I agree.

we have so many fire ants here in florida, my man puts out ant bait every week.
we used to have a brick side walk and I poured salt water over it and it killed the grass and weeds.

I don't know if your allowed to use it, but I spray vinegar on my driveway to keep moss and weeds away. Since I'm in western WA as you know we see lots of moss and green stuff too. I also use it along my fence line and it really helps keep the weeds down. Doesn't hurt the grass on the fence line and doesn't completely kill the weeds there but dies help keep them shorter so they don't short the electric fence. None of my dogs, cat, or horse have ever been hurt using it either.
I use a big pump sprayer and full strength white vinegar. Hope your able to try it. Good luck.

Wow! Your car is so clean..and your yard, too. I bet that's why the service people wash your for you. They know you have high standards inside your car.
Oh you would be in shock if you saw my kid mobile and our yard. The car service people would look at it and say "Why bother washing it. It will be dirty in 5 minutes". "Someone"...and I know who even wrote "Wash Me" on the back window. I told him, "feel free". lol!
Between kids and animals and wind, and dust nothing stays clean for long here. It's like fighting a losing battle. I just go with the flow. lol!

Spring has really sprung there. Our Spring is all about the wind. Not much grows or blooms or leafs out until middle May. The leaves and flowers are probably too frightened to come out, worried the wind will beat them to death.
