Cat, birds, flowers, horse

Our kitty cat Mercer ate a snake yesterday. First she tormented it a long time. I think it was her first snake because she seemed really surprised by its behavior. At first it acted aggressively, facing her and coiling, then it played dead, or maybe it was just exhausted from wrestling a cat, and then it wagged the tip of its tail like "just take this end" or something. I left and came back to my cat eating the entire snake, tail to head. It was gruesome--normally she eats an animal after killing it.

She is getting better at climbing trees, despite being heights-challenged. I'm so proud of her.

I didn't get the snake on film but I did get her pouncing a mouse.

Vole? She looks so satisfied. Another mid-day meal. I usually catch her eating one or two mice per day. We don't have to feed her very much. My husband couldn't be more pleased with her. It was the only justification in his mind for having a cat. Although he adores her and tells her how cute she is every night as she curls up on the couch with us. No one could say she's an affectionate cat, but she sure does her job and just like Baasha, she is pretty low impact on her environment. (She doesn't puke or claw furniture or even shed too much.)

FINALLY Spring! We've been blessed because I've been wearing shorts for a couple weeks. Besides 3 days of rain, we've had nothing but sunshine since February. We could use another rain please? I have already suffered a bad sunburn - I hope my mom doesn't read this - I used the sunscreen she gave me but it's from Wenatchee Washington and I don't think those people need sunscreen. I burned anyway including sunrashes on my arms.

I have had some wonderful bird visitors at my feeder. I wish I knew what this one is - anyone?

This is one of my favorites - an Eichelhaeher.

They're big and have a splash of blue, but they are shy and I'm lucky to have a pair that visits occasionally.

He's waiting his turn.

UPDATE: It turns out this is a Eurasian Bullfinch (Blutfink). Finally a name for this common, but pretty bird!

This is not one of my trees but they are blooming around town now - what kind of tree is this? I looked in a book and I think it's a wild cherry but I am not sure.

These are our trees/bushes right outside our kitchen and bedroom window. I even know the names.

Zierjohannisbeer (Flowering Currant) and Felsenbirne (Serviceberry). Next to them are an almond tree and a lilac, but they're not quite ready yet. I have to give it to the previous owners, they set this place up to look spectacular this time of year. I only have a few trees and shrubs left on my wish list.

I picked a little bouquet from random flowers in the yard.

My tulips finally bloomed! I planted these last fall and now I've decided that tulips kick daffodil butt and I'll never go back. I've decided I'm just not into the color yellow.

Here is the hippy working on #72. She always looks fabulous as she works in the dirt, never wears the same outfit, and makes me feel like a slob. I found out she makes medieval costumes for a living. Aha, that explains the amazing outfits. Who dresses like this to rip out stinging nettles?

Baasha, manging out*. We've gotten through about half of his coat, I figure. I am still collecting it into a pile for curiosity's sake. I tortured him with another bath in an effort to release more hair. He has gone from eating 5 flakes of hay per day to eating 1. Our newly fertilized pasture looks amazing.

(* My sister and I have always used the french "manger" (to eat) this way. Mangin' out --> pigging out. It's pretty much all I have left from my french class.)

It's been hard for me this year to get seeds germinated so I've resorted to using the windowsill above the radiator.

Last year was so rough for vegetables and even the trees and berries didn't produce normally. I hope this year is different. Here are peas and cilantro.

Lettuce, tomatoes, a couple zucchini, and carrots. I'll move them out of pots as soon as they're a little more substantial.

Basil and some snapdragons that I also started indoors. The greenhouse is topping 100F during the days and the basil looks a little burned. I need to keep the water off the leaves and only on the soil.

Our sunset through a dirty atmosphere. Rain please?

Sonja, I've deleted your comment (guess why) but thanks for the warning (a little too late though).

"Drifting hole in ozone layer set to expose Germans to skin damage" says the headline I found just now. From this I would assume that I'm in no danger because I'm American not German. (*giggle*)

But even though I applied sunscreen twice, I had a burning bumpy rash on my arms and neck. I'll keep reapplying today as I work out there.

Your birds are so different than any we have around here. Your windowsill garden looks a bit like mine. I have several flats awaiting warm weather. I think I may have begun too soon, though. They are going to take over!
Love your mouser! We don't know if our barn cats have ever caught a thing!

Snakes! That's a mouthful. Your cat really does earn her keep!
Baasha looks good. I love all the little birds. Looks like your gardening has begun. I don't plant until after Mother's Day. It was 27 degrees this morning.

We never have birds like that in England. It's not as if we're that far away from you, is it? I'm sure all your hard work in the garden will pay off and you'll have loads to eat this year. I clipped Barnaby out fully for the first time this year. Now he's only shedding hair from his face, it's slightly surreal, and he's got sunburn on his back. You can't win, can you?!

Yay, a lytha post! Missed hearing about you :)

Everything looks amazingly beautiful. Be careful with the sun!

Dreaming - I'm fascinated with learning my German plants and animals.

FV, I wonder if it's true what I've read, that female cats are better mousers.

Autumn, I wonder about the bird regions too. One bird I miss terribly from home is the common robin and I know you have those. Jealous! I could really use a Springtime robin serenade right now. The blackbirds we have here are talented but not quite as good.

Frau, I admit I felt really bad for that snake, even with his beady eyes glaring at me.

Funder, Aww..I tried so hard to post comments on your home improvement blog but it didn't work. I tried to be careful in the sun today but have a new rash on my neck and forearms. Being careful for me means I went in the house at about 2 and changed from a tanktop to a tshirt because I suspected that my sunscreen was not gonna cut it. I've got white lines from my eyes to my ears from the shadow of my glasses. A cold shower felt good tonight.

Fantastic photos! Wea re growing a ton of veggies too! currently we have a total of 40 different plants growing in the house right now! LOL some are in pots and others are waiting to go into one. We are setting up the greenhouse at the end of the month..hopefully we'll have: 8 kinds of peppers and we have two of each kind, two kinds of cucumbers,8 ball zucchini, peas, eggplants, tomatoes and I think thats it..We'll be eating alot of salsa this summer I think..lol My chocolate bell peppers never came up though wich is a big bummer..I was excited to see one in that color.

LOVE your birds..I get a kick out of seeing them here. I have bird feeders set up aswell and just love watching them.

Those tulips are fabulous. And the well dressed gardener who makes medieval costumes... That explains everything. But still, can one be a hippy and a medieval buff? LOL we may need a new category. Maybe druid?

(FYI, all horses and people are fine)

I am so impressed that your cat actually hunts mice, neither of our cats believe in working for a living. The fact that she ate a snake makes me want to come to Germany and steal her!

Careful with the sun burns. People on the Wenatchee side of the state gets lots of sun. Don't know why your sunscreen didn't work. Is it outdated?

My cats hunt snakes but I don't think they eat them. Mice are their favorite, I think. LOL

Those birds are quite colorful, more so than robins, I think. I don't know that I could identify a robin's song if I had to. Guess I'm not paying close enough attention.

Your window sills look quite lush. I've never started my garden indoors first. Maybe that's my problem. I'm not maximizing the growing season.

Tried to comment earlier--blogger ate it?

RE: Mousers Cats *learn* hunting, usually from their mamas. If the mama doesn't teach hunting, the kitty doesn't know how to do it, and they won't even chase string!

RE: sunscreen Old sunscreen is no good--throw out last year's tubes of SPF 50, because it won't work very well. Especially for palefaces like us, it's best to buy sunscreen from a busy store (with lots of turnover, thus fresh supplies of sunscreen), and to buy smaller tubes frequently.

I love your birds. I hope Mercer doesn't hunt THOSE!

Baasha looks awesome.

Love all of the spring photos! You guys are a few weeks ahead of us, that is for sure... I have a few tulips just starting to peek out from the ground.

Way to go kitty! Watching them eat animals is gruesome, but it is what they were meant to do. I've never seen a cat eat a snake! That is quite impressive.

I have 3 house cats that would love to get outside and hunt, but we live on a busy corner and I fear they wouldn't survive long...

wow reminds me that i go tto get my seeds started, but I got till end of May till it si not frosty any more, so I think Im still okay for a while.

Our male cat eats all kinds of gophers and mice and birds, and he kills snakes but wont eat them. Picky i guess. Everyone seems suprised a male cat kills them all, but I think he just likes to eat, lol.

"Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime; it is the LORD who makes the storm clouds. He gives showers of rain to men, and plants of the field to everyone." Zechariah 10:1 - this just happened to be the verse for today in my Daily Blessing Book that Donna gave me. :) Love, Mom

Longtime lurker, first time poster (and doing some catching up after a break, hence this delay between your post and my comment).

Eichelhaeher is the common jay. I had one of those for about 2 weeks, years ago, then I released it. I'd bought it at the market - back then they would sell wild birds there, though they mostly were various finches, not big birds like these. [For anyone wondering: that's Bucharest, Romania - and it doesn't happen any more, thankfully.] I took pity on the poor fellow. They most definitely do not belong in a flat, but they certainly are beautiful!

Spring is also quite beautiful, and I am looking forward to the next one, when hopefully we'll have our garden fenced in and ready to go. In the meantime, I'm just planning what to grow and drooling over beautiful gardens all over the world. Good luck with your seedlings!
