Baasha and I, and the cat, experienced our most boring day ever today as the rain poured down hard all day long. "Dauerregen" is what they call it. Non-stop downpour.
I enjoyed it a bit, sitting inside all cozy with a soft blanket and a cat and 3rd Rock from the Sun on the DVD player. But I often looked at the clock and despaired that the day would never end. Every so often I'd put my flannel and boots on, and run to the barn to comfort Baasha, Seattle horse, who'd never seen such rain.
He nibbled on my watch and my flannel. I felt so bad for him, but I told him "I'm going crazy too, I just finished the final season of 3rd Rock!" What will I do now?
Nothing outside, that's for sure, and my house was completely clean already, and all the laundry done. I couldn't even make a fancy dinner, because my man was gone at an all-day church meeting with the car, and the cupboard is bare. I couldn't even *plan* a fancy dinner because I'm totally out of healthy meal ideas (help please?).
I was shocked to see my man pull into the driveway before dark. I ran to the car and started complaining about my most boring day. How it's better to be sick when you're stuck inside with nothing else to do, and there is no good German television. No Discovery Channel, no Animal Planet, no History Channel, no SciFi network, no HGTV (sob) and no CNN that I can find despite my best efforts with our satellite dish.
He said, "We need to go down to the ponds because there is flooding everywhere in our area." I happily pulled on my rubber boots and ran to give Baasha his warm mash.
We discovered chaos down below. The creek was almost over its borders, and the ponds were spreading over the grassy shores. Oh dear. The holes in my boots started letting water in as I slopped thru the watery shores. The fish had no intake - the pipe was completely stopped up with debris, like yesterday, only worse...
Today there was no pipe to be found! My man tried and tried, his church clothes getting soaked, but the pipe was ...gone?! Trout need an inflow of water constantly - they are river fish really, so we need to find that pipe, but it was under churning grey water somewhere. The water reached the treetrunks nearby, and swirled around the fenceposts.
There is nothing we can do until the water slows down. I just checked the news, it's not good. It won't stop raining until Tuesday. The day we had planned to finish my barn. But that probably won't happen now.
An autobahn was shut down completely due to flooding. People's basements are under water, houses are about to float away.
Good that our house isn't down the hill, but what about our trout? Will they survive? (Maybe, cuz there's so much water dripping in at random, but we're new to this and ?????)
I took Baasha out because he'd been in his stall for the entire day and night last night, due to the storm. He has to go out sometime. My man was surprised that I put him out in the field tonight while rain came down, but this rain was light, and Baasha was grazing immediately, it had been so long.
I was shocked to see a stream of water running thru the middle of our field, coming down in torrents by the creek bed. My man took photos of the ponds/creek for our insurance in case we need to file a claim. My horse stepped through that creek that had sprung up overnight and didn't seem concerned.
I left him down there, and listened to the news.
I sure hope we find that pipe tomorrow. If not, our trout are in danger.

I don't have any advice about fish, except perhaps as pertains to garlic...>g<
Food: we've been grooving on a greatly-enhanced version of macaroni and cheese, which includes huge amounts of vegetables and mild chiles added to the usual carb load. It's cheap and an excellent comfort food for gloomy days! Let me know if you want the recipe.
p.s. not raining here at the moment. it will, though.
We had rain like this all day on Monday and most of the yard was flooded. Our pond has also breached its banks, although we only have ducks, not fish. Hope it stops soon, thinking of you.
The last time we had that kind of rain we had a 500 year flood that went over the spill way of our dam. 5 solid days of rain. Armadillos were lining up in front of the house, two by two.
Wishing you sunshine soon...
Hi Lytha!
I think the bird you are talking about is a "Kleiber".
In english "Eurasian Nuthatch", latin "sitta europaea".
Google for photos ;-)
We also have one coming to our birdfeeders, they are funny and very busy looking birds.
Greetings from Sweden!
:)
We had flooding like that back in May. So many homes destroyed. We were lucky and had no damage or issues but a lot of people in the area were not lucky at all.
Gosh, sometimes there's just too much of a good thing, right?
I hope the fish survive and no harm comes from all the rain.
