We've got one wall done! My man was enjoying his Saturday morning Tom & Jerry dvd comfortably on the couch when I tried to convince him, "The weather's perfect for working on the barn."
It was somehow warm out - 12 degrees that felt like 15, and I wear shorts at 18.
My man insisted again on the superfluous use of levels and their bubbles that tell the truth. I am so done with trying to make things perfect, it's just not important to me, I want it built already! (This is a photo of one of the barn door panels after rain. I like the waxy water effect.)
But since I'm not strong enough to use a riveter (see image) I need my man to lead this project and I must be patient.
I stood on the ladder a lot today, and leaned with all my weight when he used the riveter. Riveters are nasty things, and not made with enough leverage to actually do the job, unless we're talking about a pair of Levi's and not a barn wall. We've looked into renting a hydraulic riveter but could not find one anywhere.
Last week we had some nice geocachers help us start building, and we worked through horrible wind and rain together, determined to get 1/4 of it done.
The thing is way taller than I thought - there is no way my horse would be able to break a ceiling light with his head, like he could in the current stall. It's way taller, but it's way prettier than I thought too. It's shiny waxed brown, and the rain water beads up and runs down like my car after waxing.
The metal strip edges look so sharp, I love the industrial look the screws and strips give it.
I cannot wait to see more progress. Baasha is curious, straining on the lead, "Can we take a look at that thing there?"
Someday it will be done.
Now, after a day's work, I hear Tom & Jerry music as I type this. It's not Saturday morning and it sounds odd in the evening. Oh well, it is a pleasant memory-lane sound.

If you don't level out the whole thing well enough, the roof won't fit properly and may even leak! This is, why your husband is so careful about it. So let him do what is necessary and don't complain! Be patient.
your during Tom & Jerry interrupted husband ;-)
I must have missed something. So you are building a barn different than whatever Baasha's current stall is in?
It looks very spiffy!
You can't cheat with prefab metal. You can cheat with wood - hide unsquareness with trim - but not with this. Be patient!
I'm glad you have help. I've been renovating my photography studio all my myself for the past month. I was about to give up and hire a handyman, but I'm managing. I'm just astounded that it took me a month just to paint four walls and a ceiling. Ugh. Now I get to stain the deck and lay down new carpet.
I am deeply jealous--we aren't nearly as far along as you...and we opted to move firewood today while the weather was moderately non-awful. Sigh.
Everybody's right about making things level and square, but I'm with YOU: I want the dang thing finished!
It is pretty! I like the look too. Oh, and can I just say that you have very pretty hair (color too):)
Looks like you got a great start! i hope the weather holds for you to finish it! Have a great week!
Leah, I don't know if you can call it a barn, but it's not really a run-in either cuz it will have two doors. It is supposed to fit two small horses. It is located 15 feet from Baasha's current stall, so still nice and close to our house.
Funder, I guess you're right. Now we are waiting for either a hydraulic riveter or one with much longer handles for more leverage, because the roof will be tricky - the guys have to use all their strength when on the ground, and on a ladder it looks impossible with the tools we have.
NM, it took me forever to paint this house and it was just white on white. I never even did the ceilings, the walls were plenty difficult for me.
Aarene, I've seen my man looking longfully at so many neighbor's large woodpiles and we just don't have any idea where to even start a woodpile. I'm thinking behind our new barn when it's done, or in the current stall too, but that is still not enough wood.
Chelsi, that is very nice of you. I've always hated my hair and would have given anything for brown. Now my hair is fading in the last few years, from deep red to some orangy yellow color. *sigh*
Frau, we have to wait for better tools for the roof portion, so we're at a standstill again, during glorious sunny weather. Oh well!
Lookin good!!!!
Wow - it's so cool looking! Love the color. Of course Baasha deserves a lovely place to hang out.
Tom and Jerry. Seems like a sort of dangerous thing to watch before a home improvement project. Those guys are pretty accident prone. :)
Around here I'm the one wanting things level because I know what happens when you don't but I also hate needing help to get things done and the help isn't all that forthcoming. LOL
Check it out!!
thinsgs are popping there.
Is this the run in that was for him while you had that bossy pony?
He is gone yes...why do you put this up anyway? I like it by the way..justwondering..!
Kac
Kacy, so cool that you ask. We are building it for "our future", that is to say, ideally there will be two horses here.
Either a companion pony, or a riding horse for me if I ever find a job. (I had a really stressful job interview tonight and would appreciate it if you'd pray for me.)
Yah, a lot of dreams in that shelter,
and a lot of trepidation on my part.
