I hate it when this happens. Only 10 days ago I applied Equispot to Baasha, thinking we were safe, even though I'd run out of fly spray. I see now that it wasn't enough. I hate to feel like the bad horse owner, but that's how I feel today.
I check him every day, but I didn't notice it soon enough. Then I wondered if any of my previous barn owners would have noticed it at all. I'm not sure I would check the underside of every horse every day, if I were a barn owner.
His sheath is swollen and hard from horsefly bites. I noticed two of them on his sheath recently, but I didn't realize it was a problem. I had covered it in desitin as a barrier, but that didn't last.
You might think I'm freaking out about nothing major, but you can see from this perspective (other side) that it is not normal. Oh --- should I have put a PG 13 label on this post? I've been in Germany so long I don't know.
My poor baby! At first I thought OMGOSH what if he can't pee. OK, you're probably laughing cuz it's not that bad, but I'm paranoid about sheath issues gone wrong and those poor geldings who get all infected. So I locked him in the stall and waited 5 minutes. Like magic, he peed, and for the first time ever, I wasn't annoyed (cuz the door is always open and he could go outside, but noooooooo....).
But what now. I turned on a kettle of water and called the vet.
I didn't know the word for sheath. I said, "You know, geldings and stallions have this, but it's not a penis, it's ....exterior?"
The lady called it the German word for "hose." *lol*
I asked her to ask the vet what I should do. She said come in and buy some fly spray for 43 Euros. ACK!
I'm contacting Farnam as I type this. Thankfully Farnam has a dealer in Germany, and although I cannot get my preferred Flysect Super7, I can get Repel X. (Does that work?) But guess what it costs? 45€ plus 5 for shipping. Agh. But at least that's the concentrate, and I try to always buy concentrate so I can mix it myself and save money. But as a spoiled American, I'm used to buying a pint of Flysect concentrate for 20 American dollars.
So what did I do about poor Baasha? First I washed him with Betadine and warm water. Then I rinsed and rinsed with a separate clean wet cloth or two and he kept looking at me like, Geez, enough! Then I did what the vet tech said to do, I put Fenistil all over it. Fenistil is what I got at the pharmacy for my horrible ant bite reactions (of which I have 4 right now).
Then I threw down a bale of hay to keep him occupied, and put up a fly catcher in the stall. However, there are no flies in the stall. They cannot find their way in! The grape vine is too thick, and with the door closed, it is fly free. Whew.
A couple hours later I put on some Dermamycin, which is hydrocortisone. You can see that I'm almost out of Desitin. I sure wish I could get Desitin here in Germany. (Of these 4 products you can spot the German ones by their XXS size.)
I then put on latex gloves, covered them in personal lubricant, and ...PG 13.
I put baby oil around his dock to make his tail less itchy.
I took off his fly mask and washed his face with a clean wet cloth. He thought I was trying to kill him. He really hates moisture of any kind. It's 35 freaking degrees out (95F)-- doesn't a wet cloth feel good? I think so (especially a *frozen* wet cloth, but that's me). I gave him several fresh carrots in apology.
I also washed his tail cuz it was dirty with Desitin, and cleaned and scrubbed his frogs.
But I'm so glad his eyes are good. Last July he spent the entire month in a purposefully-darkenened stall, because of his horrible eye infection.
We never had horseflies back in Seattle - at least, not this variety. I didn't even know what they were. These will bite and draw blood from horse and human. They are long and grey with huge eyes - nasty!
Tomorrow morning I will reapply Equispot on his ventral side, and he will be brought in during the hottest part of the day. He will enjoy that - he loves his stall.
A recent veterinary study proved that horseflies prefer darker, reflective coat colors in horses - gray is the least attractive to flies. HM!

Could you try some human products for the moment? At least along his belly, to provide some site-specific protection. I've heard "Deep Woods Off" can be used on horses. Also, I would think a cold water hosing might help the swelling go down.
It's amazing what different species of insects are in different regions (continents). When I was back east they had these nasty biters called sheep flies that made the horses miserable!
Awww...poor Baasha...and poor you!!! Flies can be rather nasty, and I am sure it is frustrating to not be able to buy the products that you are used to. :)
Ah here in Washington my mares are getting eaten my mosquitoes! and those little black flies, in thier ears and bellies, poor babies! I am keeping fly spray on them.
I like Tri Tec 14, it builds up and is suposed to last up to 14 days(yeah right LOL) I put it on, at least every other day.
Its been hot here too! suposed to be 100 today!! and pretty close to that in Seattle! Yikes. Then its going to cool dwon again, to the
80's whew.
Benedryl cream might work good to, if you can find it, at least for the itcing. There is a powdered antihistimine available too,(put it in his grain) but again dont know if you can get it over there, I have seen it in Jeffers.
I've used Avon Skin-so-Soft bath spray for years to repell mosquitoes on myself and the horses. It smells like old-lady perfume, but the bugs hate it. Um, don't use it where you saddle will sit unless you enjoy sliding around!
I'm pretty happy this year with Eqyss marigold spray, which somebody gave me last winter...however I see that it's not being sold now because of an EPA process (?!). Hmmm. Wonder what's up with that?
It's too dang hot here today (temps are 90-ish), and very humid. I think I'll give everybody a bath tomorrow, just to cool us all down!
Isn't it amazing what products you cant find here when you think for sure they will have something like desitin! wat in the world do they use on diaper rash then? I know a german woman with kids. I can ask her whats she uses.
I've been chased by the horseflies here..they are nasty mean. You should have someone send u some products from home.
Evensong, if I were in America, I would use my Deep Woods Off on my horse right now: ) There is no such product here that I know of: ( But you're right about the cold water, the vet tech recommended it but I just couldn't freeze his privates like that when he hates water so much.
Melanie, SO frustrating, everything has to be learned anew, what works and what doesn't, and everything costs at least twice as much.
Reddunappy, I *think* the German Farnam shop has TriTec, I'll give that a try too.
Benadryl-never seen it here: ( No medicine is sold in grocery stores, you have to go to a pharmacy and ask for it. That means first you have to find out if it exists here, and then what they call it.
Aarene, Avon? I wonder where on earth I'd find Avon products. I had trouble finding them back home: ) But I did love my Skin-so-Soft bug repellant - even though it isn't quite as effective as the Flysect. This is the point where I usually improvise and learn to make something myself (like I can make tortillas now!) but unfortunately all the home-made fly sprays I've read about contain things I don't know how to get here.
Sonya, they do have a Desitin type cream here called Penaten but if you've ever used Desitin "creamy" then you'll know it is not the same thing - it is like hand lotion and runs off. The power of Desitin is in the stickiness: )
Further, I asked my horsey acquaintance for her advice about fly sprays that work and she has no idea. AGH!
Sonya, I forgot to add: fly sprays cannot be sent into Germany. I've already contacted two American companies and asked. I don't dare try to get a package by customs with such chemicals inside - I think they'd draw the line!
Sorry that Baasha has to go through this.
How many summers has he been in germany. Usually they do get used to the "Pferdebremsen" after a summer or two ( no more reactions to being bitten other than itching).
I'm guessing your vet told you to get "Wellcare Emulsion" IF you decide to go "german" I'd highly recommend "Butox" it is not officially made for horses (it's for cows and sheep) but other that Wellcare it actually is a real "Spot-on" product PLUS it's active ingredient is Deltamethrin which less of a "poison" than Permethrin.
Usually neither Permethrin (nor Deltamethrin) work for Bremsen. Which flyspray will work for YOUR horse you have to figure out by trial and error.
I can recommend "BremsenBremse" (Which smells absolutely awfull and will leave spots on greys) then "EFFOL Bremsen Blocker" works great for some (not on Crispin) smells really bad too, doesn't leave spots though. For Crispin "Leovet TamTam" works pretty good... ...plenty of products out there.
I use Butox plus TamTam (or Effol Bremsenblocker). It works well enough so far.
The "Pferdebremsen" are a curse. Nothing really works 100%. The only good thing is that "Bremsensaison" is over after two month.
@Sonja,
we use "Penaten" (the classic) It is basically the same thing. But there are quite a few ointments out there containing zinc oxide. ;)
As for Benadryl, There used to be a Benadryl lotion just for horses, unfortunatly it was taken off the market in 2003. You can get Benamine lotion in Switzerland though.
I agree the laws for over the counter drug distribution are much stricter here and that can be troublesome but I also think that in the big picture it isn't such bad thing.
For most remedies there is an equivalent. Sometimes it just takes some time to figure it out.
Poor sweet Baasha. He is so good and calm to let you wash and treat him. What a sweet patient. That fly looks nasty. I give the horses 2 Tbsp. of powdered garlic a day. Their breath stinks, but it does help with the gnats and mosquitoes. The flies still are all over them though. I guess flies dig garlic. I bought it from Springtime or some such organic outfit - not in Germany, but maybe you can grind some up. Pie and Sovey hated it at first, but now they like it!
Poor dude! I totally understand your concern...I showed up tofay and my poor thin skinned mare had several HUGE welts and about 100 bites all up and down her neck...then the underside of tiny pin-prick bloody, crusty bites!
I went ahead and used"SWAT" on her applied by towel all along her underside from chin to tits! I oput her fly sheet on...and rubbed the larger welts with "Calm Coat" she seemed to like that!
Man...bug are soo bad this year...we have these rather large deer flies too..they bite HARD!
Hang in...
Baasha..too funny ab9out the wet stuff dislike...Wa actully backed herself back into the barn, to avoid a cold water wash today..I cracked up!
KK
We have houseflies, deer flies and horseflies here - they're huge too (over 1" long and built like flying trucks with teeth). I'm pretty sure that Jeffers Vet Supply ships internationally - can you buy from them? We use fly spray, keep a sulfur block, and use a feed through with Raybon. We hardly had any flies at all until the guy down the road brought his horses back *sigh*, now we have some again coming from his house (but not too bad, thankfully).
Equiderma is an all natural product that I love - the horses don't mind it at all either, it's very soothing on any kind of skin issue (Jeffers has just started carrying it - yay!). It's by Telesis Pet, I think.
Hope your man feels better soon, poor fella!
hehehe, I just figured out that you commented on my blog. :D
In theory the EquiSpot should work on horseflies and in reality they do work but I think that the spot-on products never work good or long enough to keep all the nasty insects away. Ans sometimes a few bites is all it takes.
Do you know Divoza?! It's a dutch tack shop with online shop.
http://divoza.com/
They have stuff (like the betadine) that you can't buy in germany and basically have a mix of german/dutch/english/american products.
Iodine scrub isn't so popular here (I don't know why, I have some and use it more often than I would like to ;) ) but there are a few brands out there ("Vétoquinol Jodosept" or "Betaisadona Flüssigseife"). Iodine rinse is easy: "Braunol" is most common or "Betaisadona Lösung".
The problem with all that stuff is that (even though they are non prescription) you need a phamacy (or online Pharmacy) or your vet to get them for you
The same is true for (almost?!) every kind of Fly repelent containing permethrin! Wellcare and Butox are the most common ones on the german market (so, it wasn't hard to guess which one your vet recommended). Butox you can also only get via a vet.
OK, back to the "almost". There is ONE Flyspray out there containing permethrin: "PARISOL Fliegenspray" and Kraemer sells that.

If you want to go american, Masterhorse sells Absorbine UltraShield Black and SuperShield Green.
http://www.masterhorse.de/
...can't think of anything else right now, but if there is anything else, please feel free to ask, I'd be very happy to help if I can! :)
Amitybee, I went ahead and drove to Hueckeswagen to get the "good stuff." That is after reading some German forums where people said that against Bremse, you need Wellcare Emulsion. 43 Euros for one tiny liter, agh! And then I was shocked to see the ingredient: Permethrin. AGHGH!!! I could have bought that back home for much less money. Oh well. I want to get to work on the issue, and I'm not flying home soon, and I cannot ask anyone to ship me some, cuz this product is strictly forbidden on flights.
It seems to work, but as you know I've been using the Spot-On version every few weeks. It seems to distract the flies. They land and do not bite. They get irritated. The horse is also irritated, but not bit as often. I have to apply it every day, and it seems to dissuade them. There is no magic against Bremsen, I see. Thankfully, his sheath is slightly less swollen today. (And totally white with Desitin, so he looks like an albino horse.)
Thank you for referring me to the Dutch tack shop! I look forward to using it.
As you can imagine I'm annoyed at all the red tape (I cannot give my horse his flu/rhino shot myself!???) but: Oh well. New culture.
I went down that Absorbine path and was never satisfied. Love their Show Sheen though (but for savings, I buy the concentrate from Farnam). There is a Western shop nearby selling Show Sheen for the price of a middle east Oilfield. I cannot believe my eyes.
Thanks so much for all your advice. I will be consulting you again, if you don't mind.
Juliette, I'm hesitant about things like garlic and ginger. They are huge here for horses. Sold in bulk, even! I just don't know. I have not heard of much efficacy for garlic, and aren't the related to onions and aren't onions bad??? And ginger may even run a risk. However, it works for me. No mosquitos bite me cuz I eat garlic everyday. And ginger every week. Also, I stink enough to ward off strange men and curious vampires. I come from a garlic loving city - do you know we have a garlic festival each year and they serve garlic ice cream? !!!! My old life seems so far away.
Kacy, guess what, I was running thru my sprinkler yesterday cuz it was freaking 95 out, and I saw Baasha watching me so I haltered him and tried to drag him thru too, and he went way wide, trying to avoid it. In the end, we both got soaked, and my front lawn got all hooved up. He hated the entire experience so I won't be doing that again. (But doesn't it feel good?)
Poor sweet Baasha! What a good Horse Mom you are, though. Nasty evil horseflies!
As horse owners, your post isn't PG 13 at all. It's just life.
I'm sure he's ok, but just imagining what it would feel like if biting flies bit ME on my private areas....eeek!
I'm glad we don't have that species here either. The biting flies we do have are just starting to become a problem. I've started using a fly mask because I just hate seeing nasty flies near my horses' eyes. beh!
Sure hope Baasha feels better soon...and the flies stop biting him...and the ants stop biting you, too.
