I answered in the comments but I had already prepared this detailed answer and wanted to use it: )
*1: Josta berries! They are a hybrid of the black currant and the gooseberry, developed in Germany in the 70s, and their name comes from the German names for the two: Johanissbeeren (currant) and Stachelbeeren (gooseberry). Cool, huh?
*2: Amelanchier is their pretty name. My German English online dictionary is telling me they are called serviceberry in English. Huh. Never heard of it. Have you? But Wiki says it is native to every state in America except HI. OK then. Also, George Washington planted them on the grounds of Mt. Vernon. In German they are Felsenbirnen.
*3: Tayberry! These are my very favorite thing to eat that grows in our yard. Wiki says: It is named after the River Tay in Scotland. They are not loganberries, but they look alike and were developed the same way. (I find this contradictory, but forum members discuss their tayberry and loganberry plants separately.)
Here is what I picked today.
That small one on the right is red currant. The biggest one is a gooseberry - have you ever seen these before? They are like big grapes. So you can see the mix of currant and gooseberry gives that dark purple one, the josta, which is my favorite member of this happy family. Those tayberries don't belong in this picture at all, oops.
Time for a smoothie!

I'm glad you're checking these out before you go wild with the smoothies.
Except your gooseberries look red, and ours are green! And the Tayberry looks like a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry.
MMMMmmmm, I'm reading about YOUR berries while eating my morning oatmeal with blueberries and strawberries from my own garden!
leah, i'm thinking pies now..
autumn, you can eat them when they're green...or are yours another type? you're right, a tayberry is that exact cross.
yah, aarene, you have some awesome blueberries while mine are only babies. maybe in a couple years? i'll never forget down on gilman blvd in issaquah, they have this "walk of blueberries" where everyone can come eat as many as they like. but we are asked to not collect in boxes/bowls, so there is enough for everyone. we were goin for a geocache down there and i couldn't stop eating the blueberries. FREE blueberries!
Lecker! Your berries. Did you cook Rote Grütze already? *yammi*
