We just got back from a nice geocaching tour of neighboring Burscheid, and in the back of my head I'd hoped we'd run into that farm where the Standardbred lives. I had no idea where that was, so many turns, and I didn't pay attention the first time. But I would love to see that horse I wanted to rescue, to see him at pasture at least, and rub on him a bit.
It started pouring rain right in the middle of our loop, and I was wearing a flimsy little jacket with no hood. We came across a lovely watermill farm with several horses and a new foal. I am not really into foals but I do love watching them nurse. I thought of Baasha, locked outside in the rain today, and realized that if that tiny baby can handle this (and me too!), then so can he. Baasha does not like to get wet.
Finally we had to give up cuz we had the coordinates wrong and were on the wrong trails, so we made our way back to the car. Then I saw it, the familiar barn we'd visited last month. I said, "Oh please, can I say hello to that old horse?" and my man agreed.
The old man was there, and it took him a moment to recognize us (soaking wet!). We told him we were just walking around and would love to say hi to the horses. (Doesn't that sound crazy and suspicious - why were we walking in his neighborhood?)
He told us to jump into his car and he drove us to the pasture. (This is typical in Germany - pastures are separate from barns/homes.) We saw only three ponies. It turns out the Standardbred I'd wanted to rescue had been sent to another pasture and he knows no details. *sigh* I hope the best for him and wonder where he is, exactly.
Anyway, the old man showed us his pride and joy, Suleika, a bronze-brown pony that would fit perfectly with Baasha. She's 30 and beautiful and healthy, and the perfect size - small enough to share a stall, and big enough to not slip under our fence. I would say she looks about the size of a Welsh pony.
The old man gave me baguette after baguette to feed the three ponies, all the while chatting with my man. He said, "I'm getting old, I am. And I've seen your farm, and I would love to send you Suleika when I can no longer care for her. I know she'd be well off there."
I was thinking, "OK WHEN!?"
Cuz we keep getting calls from people who see our ad for a free space for a companion horse, and these people are not reading my ad carefully enough.
What part of pony and old is unclear? We keep getting people with warmbloods. Young warmbloods! 1 year old stallions. Then other people call - more stallions. (I need to repeat, perhaps, that people don't castrate male animals here very often. Practically all male Shetlands are intact, and that goes for dogs too.)
One girl called us to keep her blind horse here, but as I considered our complicated landscape, I realized the poor thing would not be able to navigate it safely, and might even end up in a fish pond, drowned! Most everyone is calling with young healthy big horses, hoping to get free board. My flyer says clearly what size (in Cm) and that we need something old and gentle for my Baasha. We will provide free board, but only to the right companion.
The old man said, "It's hard to find a companion horse this time of year, I understand." People are perhaps more willing to consider options in winter.
How hard can it be, to give away something for free?
(Does anyone recognize the horse in the picture in my ad? It is a picture of this stallion when he was older. When I was a little girl I had pictures of him taped up on my wall. Hint: related to Baasha, but I did not know that then, cuz at that time I only dreamed of having my own horse.)

I had forgotten that you were looking for a pony for Baasha. Jackson's new girl is thinking the same for a companion for Jackson--she has about an acre of pasture, which she is working on making baby-safe before he comes home, but he would be so much happier with a friend. Too bad the old man is willing to let Suleika relocate right away. Good luck on your search!
I was hoping you were going to tell me who the horse in the pic is. LOL No guesses from me.
I am amazed you are having a hard time finding a companion for Baasha. I know if I put the word out that i needed an older companion pony I would have no trouble coming up with someone willing to let me support their pasture ornament!
BTW you asked about Cinnamon on our blog. She arrived last fall from California and is a large pony, quarter horse by breeding. She was national champion in the pony jumpers a few years ago. Her coat color is truly cinnamon colored and beautiful.
Pretty crazy that you can't give away a great home.
I was thrilled to be able to recall enough German to catch the meaning of the flyer.
I don't remember the name of the mystery stallion, but I know why he's important--does that count?
Good luck finding a pony!
You know, even when people can't afford to care of their animals...even when the animals are starving to deat, the people won't give them up. They'll still want to 'recoup their money' and ask for several hundred to a thousand dollars.
It's sad because the animal looks so bad with bones sticking out everywhere, no vet care, bad feet...but yet, the owners think they can still earn a few bucks of their animal.
Sure hope you are able to find a pasture mate for Baasha soon. Maybe it will work out like it did with your kitties.

Hey EvenSong, she should get Jackson a goat! I am goat crazy now ;)
I am not so sure leaving all the males intact is a good thing. Why on earth are cats so expensive? Are those the only species that gets neutered? I'm very confused!
Suleika sounds like a fantastic companion for Baasha. I hope the perfect pony (or goat!) comes along soon for him.
Cool so when does the Old pony move in?
Can't you just tell him right out that NOW you can take the pony?
Evensong, I am just so happy to finally have a good "lead": ) So many horses were bad fits. Today we went again to see her - ok, to find that Geocache - and she really is perfect. The other pony has a big gash on his face and the old man said, "Barbed wire" and I thought oh geez, I hope we get the mare before she gets hung up on that fence." But if she's survived this long..
Rising Rainbow, it's Orashan. And I just found out he was born in Germany, and nearby! I am totally amazed - he was a popular show stallion in the US, but born in our state.
Melissa - it is very different here - the horse market is very strong. The prices are so high I cannot imagine what I'll do when I need another horse someday.
Leah, I was hoping someone would be able to read the ad!
Aarene, he was important to me cuz 1.) egyptian and 2.) his coloring - he had a dark mane for a very long time: )
Lisa, did you know that we found the cats on ebay? Yup - too weird!!
Funder - I'm confused too. I've heard the argument that it is not healthy to neuter your pets. That is the opposite of what I heard in America.
Frau - I'm hoping October - sooner would be better!
FV, that old man keeps saying how he will never part with that pony. But practicality is dawning upon him in his old age!
lytha, if the market doesn't turn around here, you'll be able to get a lovely horse here and ship it over there for much less than buying one there.
I can't imagine buying a cat on ebay. that's just weird.
