Finally's cat?

I'm trying to get a cat.

Ever since that 13th mouse played around my feet at feeding time. I thought, oh, it's kitty cat time.

I'd really enjoy the companionship, and Baasha loves cats around him and even on him.

But this is not America. There are not nearly as many unwanted animals as back home.

I planted catnip, hoping to lure a cat to us, but so far no cat.

I'm looking on Germany's biggest marketplace.de, and funny, all the cats cost money. Lots of money.

I find it especially odd that medium haired cats like my parents' Popoki are called "Maine Coons" and "Norwegian Forest Cats" and they go for hundreds of Euros. They're not even purebreds, they are just a mixes with medium length hair that someone found in a dumpster in Spain and took to the shelter. I also find it odd that medium haired cats are extremely rare here. Oh, OK, cats in general are kind of rare here. It's a dog land.

I went through several rescue organizations' lists of cats, and they are all 150-200 Euros each for the adoption fee.

They come neutered and vaccinated. That costs money. I understand. One lady told me if I cannot afford 200 Euros for a cat, I do not deserve to have a cat, because I would not be able to properly care for it. I also understand that, but maybe because I'm American, I feel like it should be possible to find a free cat.

Doesn't anyone out there in this country want to give up their beloved housecat to a new home, because of lack of time or allergies?

My man doesn't want mice coming over from the stall to his office, and it's only a matter of time.

My mom told me to pray about it, and I did.

Come on, kitty out there, find us.

Did you visit the teirheim?

I don't recall their adoption fees being over 60, including a spay.

Dogs were more closer to 200.

Our has cats all the times, even kittens.

The don't sell cats in pet stores here. If you want one, you go through a breeder. My brother paid 600 for his cat.

You could always keep an eye out on toytown, many people post when they are looking for new homes for their pets.

I was just going to say the same thing as Lost in Translation. When I lived in Stuttgart, that is where I went. I got a nice, short haired calico. Brought her back to the states with me when I left too. That was almost 20 years ago. and I paid in Marks...The Euro wasn't thing back then.

It's the same here. I went to the dog pound here to look at getting a dog and they all reminded me of Cujo. They actually had ads on the dogs and some said to not look them directly in the eye as they took that as a sign of agression..LOL

It's soooo expensive to get a pet here. Im actually going to get a dog from poland! lol it's a non profit place and they will ship the dog over with someone. You still pay the same amount but I hate buying from breeders and refuse to buy from a store and the dog pounds scare me.

What a different culture you are in. At one point in time my neighborhood had about 50 feral cats. No mice, no birds, no squirrels, no bunnies. One of the friendlier cats had kittens, and I had a hard time giving them away. Now most of the cats are gone, and all the little critters are back. I actually saw a squirrel run across my paddock the other day -- the first time in 15 years.

hat about checking in with some of the local small animal vets? Perhaps they would know of someone with kittens, or an older person who can't care for their cat any longer... Just a thought.
We can't have outdoor kitties here because of the coyotes and great horned owls. But with the coyotes and great horned owls, we have no mice, either.

Lost, I visited the tierheims' websites, where they list all their cats.

I don't really understand what a Schutzgebuehr is - do you? I mean, a "protection fee" makes sense for a horse, to be sure someone isn't just gonna sell it for meat, but for cats? Help!

I did go to Toytown, but found nothing in my state.

600 for a cat - I hope it was a purebred!

Wazzoo, I think they call calicos "Glueckskatze" for some reason. They also call any silver tabby a "Wiskas Katze" because I guess the Wiskas cat food company uses one as a mascot (?). Oh, those are expensive!

Sonya, cuju, huh? too funny! I'm curious how it will go for you, to get a dog. Let us know, ok?

NM, 50 feral cats in one neighborhood? omgosh!!! i didn't know cats killed squirrels.

Evensong, that is a great idea. I have already asked two of my vets. Also, for a pony for baasha.

Today is Baasha's birthday and his huge apple strudel is in the oven now!

Wow, who knew it could be difficult to find a cat? I think you need to start a service like Craigslist, since obviously there is a need in your area!!!

Related note: Our barn kit will be delivered this week, and already the neighbor's cats have been lurking around, trying to suss the sitch re: job opportunities for cats when our barn is finally in place!

Aarene, there is a craigslist here (Cologne), and in many European cities. It has just not "taken off" yet. It's basically crap.

But even if it worked, and everyone used it like in America, there would still be the problem of lack of cats. And the people with false purebreds selling them as such.

HM!

It is funny the things you learn when you move to a different country! Who knew finding a cat would be so hard. Good luck I hope you find one soon.

wait until May, lytha. Then the cat mommies have got their babies and they are offered for free in the newspapers. And baby-cat is sooo cute!

I wish we had that problem here. Our shelter is always filled with homeless cats...

Huh, cats are hard to come by in Germany. Who would've thunk it? We just had a cat show up in the barn last week . . .

Too bad you're not anywhere near Berlin, we've got plenty of cats looking for homes here! I can think of three right off the top of my head within 2 blocks. Actually anywhere you've got a decent Russian population is a place you can often find a lot of cats.

Praying with you that a kitty shows up soon.

That's just so weird! You mean that every single cat is spayed and neutered once it is born and there are no feral barn cats making babies like crazy that noone wants?

Or is that animal control scoops up any stray cat they find and euathanizes it the minute it gets back to the pound?

Do they have animal shelters like the SPCA or even animal control?

Maybe you should have brought a cat back with you from the U.S.. lol!

There are stray cat here everywhere that noone wants.
