Today I was cleaning out Baasha's feet and I heard a rustle in his hay trough. I knew there had to be a mouse in there.*
I started feeling around in there, and sure enough, a mouse popped up. Popped is the word, like almost *at* me!
Then he exhibited his Spidey Skills and climbed up a freaking solid smooth wall! Did you know mice can do this?
Or maybe only this mouse? I had no idea of this ability.
He had silky grey fur, and two shining black eyes that had the sweetest expression. This was definitely a show-quality mouse, if there is such a thing.
Then the silly guy just jumped right back into the hay, and hid from me.
Later I had to drop a hay bale in there, and worried about him. But sure enough, he was fine, he scurried right over the bale and got comfortable somewhere underneath it, as Baasha dug in.
I wonder what Baasha thinks of his mousey friend. I asked him but he isn't telling me.
I wonder what a good name would be for a pet mouse in the barn. My man is seriously shaking his head at this notion. His work office is adjacent to the stall, and he pictures mousey armies moving in, snacking on his books. He asked me if the mice are eating Baasha's hay. I said, "Mice don't eat hay." Well...I don't think so...do they?
I would hate to see him drown in the water bucket, like so many before him (he's # 7).
My man says on mouse # 26 we can get a cat.
I love cats, but I don't hate mice, can you tell?

* - This is Danger Mouse, a british cartoon series (about a mouse super hero). My man is a fan, so I placed the photo here, wondering what he will think if/when he reads my blog.

Are you carving hatchmarks on the stall door to keep track of the mice?
Toad had a pet RAT for several years. The thing lived in the wall of his stall (between the metal sheathing and the insulation) and would join Toad at meals. They would eat beetpulp together out of the rubber feed pan.
"Cute"? or "Eeeew"? I could never decide.
I had custody of a rat-killing dog for quite a while when I was working at that barn, but as far as I know she never managed to kill that particular rat.
Too funny! My husband thinks I am crazy because I like our barn mice too.
I've caught many mice in the mousetraps but every once in a while I'll still see a live one scurrying around. The horses don't seem to mind the little critters- one was even in Annie's hay trough at feeding time too.
I doubt that he would eat much, but I would hate for sweet Baasha to get bit on the nose! X-(
We had a "volunteer" great horned owl move in a few years ago, to keep our rodent population down. (I actually think it was the owl that disappeared our barn kitty shortly before I became of aware of it.) But , believe me, even without the issue of the cat, it wasn't worth it: Think giant piles of carnivorous bird poo in the most inconvenient places!
You need to get yourself a nice little Cairn Terrier...bred to keep mice out of cemeteries in Scotland. My Cairn loves to hunt rodents...squirrels beware!
I likie Julie's idea!
Okay girlie..thought of you all through the movie I watched...as I laughed it up and then cried some too...liked it alot....it was filmed in Seattle and was really neat how they focused on that!
"Love Happens" see it if you have not!

Aarene, no, I'm just trying to remember. Hey, that's it - that is probably how the mice survive out there with no water - everything is frozen - the mice probably clean up some spilled beet pulp, and that is how they get their fluids.
Marla, do you have a barn cat?
FV, I can't stand to trap them - when we moved in I threw away all the mouse traps. Now, moles, on the other hand...(if it were legal to kill moles, I would be doing it!)
Evensong, oh I remember owl droppings. Entire mice come out!
Photogchic, hey, that is the kind of terrier our neighbors have! I should start borrowing him: )
Allhorsestuff, you had me so confused by this comment. I thought you were talking about Groundhog Day. So I researched where that was filmed, and no, it's not Seattle. And there was no laughing or crying during Twilight that I recall, (not exactly in Seattle, but not far). Then I read your comment again and I think I get it: ) I'll look it up, and see if it's available here in Germany. Everyone seems to always mention Sleepless in Seattle when I say where I am from, but honestly there are not that many Seattle scenes in that film!
Ok, so this makes you one mouse closer to getting a kitty! :)

We have five cats ... and no mice, or moles, or rats! There must be a connection somewhere...
Sorry B,
The movie is called "Love Happens"
