Going to see a Standardbred

Aarene knows that I'm also looking for that horse for my husband, and we both thought, "Why not look for this horse first, if an Arabian is such trouble?"

I want a small Standardbred, if possible. I don't really like big huge horses.

I love the Standardbred mind and "WTH he's only 2 WEEKS off the track and you didn't  TELL ME!" as I rode one last year.

I also like that they usually have great feet and legs and somehow, they are really affordable. I am astonished at human nature that some breeds are out of my range and some breeds are at slaughter prices, for the perceived value that has nothing to do with conformation or temperament.

They do have the world's ugliest heads, and therefore I think I'll name my horse, if I get one of these, The Big Giant Head (William Shatner's character in 3rd Rock from the Sun, a show I love).

Although I'm feeling trepidation as usual, I'm heading to Essen Saturday morning (despite my pleading English student's phone call tonight asking for another tutoring).

I don't like this color of horse (that's his ad on ebay) but he seems to have good feet.  I would laugh if I ended up getting both a cat (Mercer) and a horse (Tempelhof) on ebay.

I will definitely discuss a pre-purchase exam because I'm not stupid.

But I was stupid last time, paying 350 for an exam on a horse I could not afford. I'm afraid to get my hopes up, but wouldn't it be nice if I could just get a horse I could get on and ride out on, no worries. For my husband, right.

You don't like the color because black tack will disappear on that hide and you'll have to get something with REAL color.

I think he's beautiful, including his Great Big Head.

Actually, I like his color. My Rocky Mountain Horse is a dark chocolate brown. Throw a brown saddle witha colorful blanket or pad on him and he'll look great. But like they always say, a good horse is never a bad color.

Eeeee! I like him! And eBay no less. I didn't even know that was possible.
He reminds me of the color of brownies. Mmm!
He would look lovely with cobalt or bright blue tack..or kelly green!

Best wishes on this one. I hope he gives you a happy surprise!

He looks really nice. Hope this horse works out for you guys :)
I don't think ALL Standardbreds have ugly heads. My STB Poppy definitely doesn't.

So what's wrong with dark coloured horses? hahaha. I have lovely bright coloured saddle pads for my dark liver chestnut mare!

Good luck on the husband horse hunt.

How very exciting!
I adore the look of him...even in his dark colored beauty. ( I love me a black bay) He is so handsome, truly hope and pray it works out to have him.

PS
Like Jeni's idea of a brighter saddle pad and your black tack.

That magnificent creature is the color of dirt (less grooming!) with a noble head (more brains!) I hope you - and more importantly, your husband - like him!

Like Aarene says, think of the rainbow of tack waiting for you! I'm sure I'm not the only person who'd happily mail you some lime green biothane in exchange for chocolate. :)

Well, I learned something new, that they have horses on Ebay. We had a wonderful horse that I wondered if perhaps he were part standardbred, he was so totally bay and had a big head. My nick name for him was out of James Herriot: Great Daft Buggah. I look forward to the next chapter of this.

I've seen standies with GORGEOUS heads. They're breeding that jug head out of them. You know I love standies. I'd love to see you get one.

In my opinion Dom's Standie is absolutely gorgeous. I love his roman nose lol.

Back on topic, I like this horse, but I am a fan of dark horses (favorite horse is Friesian, yeah sort of a dead giveaway lol). I can't wait to read about the visit.
