One more way to make us worry

I came home from work today to find Baasha had a gaping wound on his hock. It hadn't bled much so I hope it's not too deep. I washed it with betadine and then coated it with neosporin (something I trust and I don't know what to trust here!), padded it with cotton pads, and then I got out an old vet wrap that I hadn't used in over 10 years. Still works. Great stuff! Strangely our horse doesn't usually cut himself open, he finds other ways to scare us. My man took a look at his hock and said "Is he suicidal? He's trying to find new ways to kill himself?" *sigh* I got bit by a horsefly twice while treating him. I sure hope that vet wrap isn't too tight. I'm not very skilled at bandaging, like I said, he usually finds other ways to run up the vet bills. July had 10 vet visits. Hoping August will be different!

Oh, and the only way he could have gotten that cut, I think, is if he rolled next to a Tpost and hit it hard. Good thing he just had a tetanus shot.

UPDATE: He's much better this morning, whew! The wound is clean and smaller and healing fast.

Poor boy, they do like to make us worry, don't they? Hope it gets better soon.

I can't find the citation for the person who said that a horse is God's prettiest container for suicidal impulses. Baxter Black, maybe.

Sigh.

Lovely what they can do huh?
I finally figured out what is biting the horses and leaving them so welted up, its deer flies!
Both horses are wearing flysheets with neck covers, the Palominio's neck cover stays up better, but I still like the Amigo bug buster sheet better....

10 vet visits in July! My goodness, here's hoping for a better August!

Great quote, Aarene. They all spend their lives looking for the perfect place to die.

Me thinks Baasha has a secret crush on the vet and that is why he keeps coming up with excuses to see him/her. It's a good thing you have a job now. My horses always wait until one of us gets laid off and then they start committing suicide. I've decided to officially change Bombay's name to Scar.

I like Aarene's quote. Silly Baasha! :(

I think he figured he needed to change things up a bit! Change is good... well, maybe not when it comes to horses and things they get into!
I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was.. oh, and I agree... hooray for vet wrap AND have I got it on too tight?!!!

Thank goodness! I wonder if Baasha is just missing you now that you are working. Sophie scratches herself to bloodiness when I leave her too long.

Ooops! You must be sick with worry wondering what you'll find every time you enter his paddock. I hope he stays out of trouble.
Love that last photo. Do you sometimes miss taking Baasha out for a ride? Maybe a short, relaxing hack together is something you both need? I bet he also misses those great times with you out on the trail.

LEAH F, I think some of them are actually looking for the *most inconvenient* place to die.

you have such an interesting story! I'm from San Francisco, but do love Germany. So inspiring to see how you made it all happen!

Congrats on your new job, and hope your pretty grey is 100% healthy again soon!

Good grief! I'm glad it's looking better. They do like to find new ways to scare us!

I think you could put a horse in a stall padded with soft, fluffy cotton and they'd still get a cut. I'm glad Baasha's cut is healing quickly. 10 is a nice round number; no need to up the vet visit tally to 11, I hope.

Don't they just know how to dent themselves and worry us! Yet I anticipate Baasha having the life of Methuselah and worrying you for many years to come. He knows that he is loved.

horses do drive you nuts sometimes, don't they?

Given that this is a horse that fell through a bridge and flew across an ocean, is it any wonder he continues to fill his life with some sort of adventure?

Egads. Heal up, Baasha.

Hope you are doing good. I'm glad you got a job but it does suck because we don't get to as many updates anymore.

Hugs from a fan of you and Baasha!
