Lisa said she'd be tempted to buy a grey after my visit to Al Najma. I'm tempted in a way because I know not all horses are pigs like mine.
It's inconceivable. My horse who thinks rain or puddles will kill him, wants wet earth all over him as often as possible. He grinds his ears into the mud in an effort to be rid of cleanliness.
Yesterday was bath day and I recruited my husband for help getting photos of the 5 minutes I would have a clean horse. (This photo has been altered for brightness.)
Such a lovely 5 minutes.
He was touchable. Glowing. The cat didn't recognize him.
It was nearly impossible to get good photos cuz the sun was shining and you know white horses and sun - better to find some shade or else the horse is a washed out cartoon.
This is the year of the rubbed out mane. Hooves grow faster than mane. Agh. But he's not touched it since I started using an herbal oil on him (messy icky!) and since I roped off his favorite rubbing tree with a ghetto fence (hay twine).
He can rub all he wants on the new stall - the metal edges don't catch hair.

My husband said, "Did you notice how gross your horse is?"
Hmmmm...did I notice?: )
"Did you see his right side especially?"
"Yes. That's why I'm taking pictures." *sigh*

I'm sorry. I laughed. It's like he was saying "See Mom, no more white!"
let my life serve as a warning to others who might consider a classic grey arabian.
phooey!
this is coming from a kid who was a born clean freak. i am told i cleaned my own diapers. one of my earliest memories is polishing our oven's metal surface, but i was too short to see the top of the stove.
if my mom is reading this she's gonna be thinking of the cleaning song i used to sing.
"unlived in" is how i want my house to look, and "undriven" is how i wish my car to stay looking. i work at it. but the horse mocks me.
a joke of fate, that i have a white horse who loves being filthy.
very funny!
Yes, but look at that beautiful face! I'd forgive him anything. I too have a grey horse. I feel your pain! Every time I wash him down after exercise I know he's going straight into the field to have a roll and I wonder why I bother!
Hey, Baasha! I think you missed a spot!
OooooOOooh, nevermind. You got it.
>snork<
He's beautiful even when he's filthy. It was nice to see him (briefly) clean though.
Having a gray horse is like having a white car - it's an endless and ultimately losing battle.
Dan
Aarene, i was hoping you'd notice: )
I actually found a palm sized clean spot and I kept caressing it, "Oh look Baasha, you missed a spot!" but it's no use.
I really enjoyed your video of Sto..Fiddle rolling and your commentary that she do a better job. I just cannot bring myself to that acceptance. (I honestly mistyped that, isn't that something. I still see you with Story, cuz I'm so far away. Like,I sometimes think my grandparents will still be there if I go to West Seattle.)
Dom, you are too kind. Your horses are also the enviable BAY color. AAAAAAAAAAAGH.
Dan, you mean a black car, right? cuz really, a black car is way tougher than a white one. i've had like 15 cars and i worked my butt off on the black one the most. the white ones are slightly more forgiving, but nothing is as forgiving as a grey/champagne car. but who wants to drive an autobahn-colored car and get hit!?
the car i bought this week is another blue one. i just cannot handle another black car or white horse: )
funder, agh, i admit i bought a yaris this week. *cringe* a tiny japanese deathtrap (TJD). but hopefully with enough airbags to survive the autobahn everyday. see, we really shouldn't put the trailer before the horse, i mean, the towing vehicle...
so in an effort at economy, i bought an econo-car this week until we have another horse, trailer, and need to tow.
a yaris. a tiny thing that gets with diesel the same MPG as the "huge" prius. but at least it's not a DACIA, as WHP warned against.
it's a toyota so it should serve well.
we'll see. horse first, then towing vehicle!
Aww Lytha... But he looks Oh So Innocent in the dirty pictures!!
Such a lovely horse- dirty or not. Give him a brushing from me! ;)
I feel your pain. I think grey/ mostly-white (in my case) horses are born with the instinct to constantly be dirty, just to make there owners hang their heads and wonder why they ever invested in a light colored horse. My mare can smell a mud puddle from 3 acres away.
That is a cute car! I love Toyota! I had a 1987 Camry and it didn't die until 2009 with over 325k on it. Original motor, original everything. I miss that car.
Baasha sure cleans up nicely. He's gorgeous. Funny how they just can't stand that just-washed feeling. He did a good job of distributing the mud.
*cries* Why? Why did you have to remind me?? *sniff*
So far Chrome seems like a clean horse. Faran taught him how to roll in the pond this summer, but he seems to have given that up thank goodness. Water is probably too hot lol. When I bathe him if I let him graze until he's completely dry he won't roll. He doesn't mind being clean. The part he hates is the water running down his side. :) I'll keep my fingers crossed that he continues to be a clean boy when he's white.
Oh and Baasha is gorgeous clean or dirty, but clean . . . wow! He's so white! That makes me really hope Chrome doesn't go flea-bitten like his mom . . . although the dirt wouldn't show as bad . . . sigh.
Oh...no!!! He was so beautiful - and then.... well, when it dries, will it fall off and leave him almost white?!
Baasha is beautiful, clean or dirty.
Ha, ha, that's why I bred Annie to a "dark" stallion. I have a fifty-fifty chance of a gray but I think Yalla's going to stay dark.
Still, dark horses look dirty too, believe me.
Whew...that's dirty. I can see why you've been thinking of choosing a dark horse.
Baasha sure was gorgeous and bright while it lasted, though :)
~Lisa
Wow that is too funny!
Hehe he sure did get dirty!
I have a palomino paint that actually likes to stay clean, I was suprised cause he is sooo white! But when I bathe him there is really not much dirt to wash off.
Clearly he aspires to be an appolosa. :). Maybe a red roan would be a good option. Seems like a good option for a "looks clean after rolling" horse.
Sparkling clean, then, Dirt! Bag! LOL!

Can you dye a horses coat? LOL just kidding! Honestly there are a LOT of grey Arabians out there and I fear that when I horse shop the one I fall in love with will be grey! I'd love to hear any tips on sort of keeping him clean....He's so gorgeous, clean or dirty!
Oh, geez.
That's awful!
The lady I ride with used to have a couple of greys--- I got spoiled by them because they were unusually finicky and rarely even rolled.
He looks good even when he's muddy, at least :)
