Not Science Fiction

No this is not the imaginings of a SciFi geek (me) - this is what I encountered today when I asked to see the company parking garage.

I freaked out. NO WAY.

I'm afraid of automatic car washes. No way will I put my beloved car into a freaking robotic car stacker.

Get this - you have to take your car measurements in MILLIMETERS to see if it meets the standard required to use Robo-Park.

The Office Manager held a key up to a panel next to a normal looking garage door and I heard all this clicking and whirring and had no idea that cars were shuffling in there like tetris blocks.

This is the exact design the company uses - I have the very complicated User Guide in my hand (in German, thanks!)

What would you do? Are you curious how it works? I was - check out these animations showing how the car stacking and restacking occurs (click ANIMATION):

I think I'd heard of such car elevators in Germany, in fact, Snopes.com has an entry on this.

Forgetting your purse in your car doesn't mean just running back and getting it - it means calling the system and shuffling all other employees' cars. Good grief.

Would you do it?

That's so cool! I would use it. Do you think that my Ford F250 extended cab truck would fit in one of those? LOL!! Do they have a backup generator if there is a power outage?

I would have to use it just so I could say that I had - it is cool! Better make sure you don't forget anything in your car though, that could become a big deal!!

How incredibly cool!
I've seen stacked boat storage - but they just lift the boat and park it in the designated slot. They don't play tetris with it!
Oh, you are so right about the purse thing. I'm always having to run back to the car for something... they'd probably charge me extra to constantly reaccess my car!

Pretty sure that my Ford Ranger + canopy do NOT fit their parameters.

But Heck Yeah, I'd use it...especially if they'd let me ride around on it! Wheeeee!

allright - i think i might try it. this train thing is costing me 4.50 per day. (a monthly ticket is 70$.) parking at this robo-stacker-garage is FREE. i get over 50 mpg with the prius. i am spending 1.25 hours each way using a park n ride. even if traffic is HORRIBLE on the 3 autobahns.....hmmmmmmm. oh, and tonight on the train, the 4 drunkest men i've ever seen in my life got on and surrounded me and rammed into me and fell into me and i almost couldn't get off the train cuz they were all around me. i honestly don't know how they were able to get the alcohol to their mouths, they seemed too drunk to drink. (one of them couldn't stand on his own and had to be held up.) scary!

If all parking garages were like that, Hollywood producers wouldn't be able to have car chase scenes like they do today. Action films would never the the same.

I've never heard of such a thing. Amazing. Certainly is good use of space. But I wonder what happens if there is ever a glitch, like a mechanical or computer failure or power outage. Incredible. Let us know how it works for you.
