Seattle has a new train. New to me, I'd never been on it and I'm pretty sure I helped fund it.
The thing is, if you say you're gonna take the train, no one knows what you mean, cuz around here trains are for cargo and something that is actually a train that carries passengers is called "the light rail." OK then.
We took the train! It was so utterly convenient it frustrated me because it goes from SeaTac airport, which is 5 minutes from where I lived when I was in college, and it goes directly to my school, University of Washington. Soooooo convenient. I was forced to drive or bus from 1991-1996, ugh.
The rules were funny:
Ticketing operates on the honor system, like Germany. Even funnier than the rules are the announcements about which side of the train should be used to disembark. In Germany they say, "Please exit the train left of the direction of travel." but in Seattle? "Next stop, Othello. Exit on my left." MY left? So the train is talking to us. Cute.
The following pics (except for the last one) were all taken from the train. I'm so happy Seattle has a train, and I hear eventually it will spread out East/West and not just North/South.

Yay, light rail. It probably won't make it far enough north in my lifetime to be useful to me, but I can hope. On the bright side, I have NOT helped fund it so far--the sales tax for cars took a huge bump to fund this (the year that I had to replace both my commuter car and the farm truck), but only for people who live in served/soon-to-be-served areas. Which isn't me.
Trains are very cool!
