Random December observations and events

Amazon finally let me watch the movie War Horse for free and I'm so glad I waited cuz it was exactly as silly as I expected. A horse who runs to take the place in harness of another who is about to be shot dead for slacking? I did cry 4 times, so there's that: )

Below: Happy, unclean Mag, and our tree.

That is my Christmas present from J, 1500 fire starters for our wood stove. (Is there a better word for them?) So many I can barely lift the sack.

Today as I went out to feed my animals, I was shocked to see what looked like a sink hole right next to the fence, thankfully not on the horse side of the fence! It was full of water. It was so big and deep I was nervous standing near it.

Last week some animal dragged off one of our recycling sacks, all the way up the street before chewing the sack open and making a huge mess I had to clean up at 3 AM. I know Mag and Bellis saw everything, "What animal could do this?" They weren't telling.

Like today, they know how that sink hole appeared, I may never get an answer. It was the location of a rain-water cistern. But where was the cistern? A skinny frog climbed out, it looked just like Gollum. J and I both stared at the hole, no idea who to call to handle such a problem.

Our state went into strict lockdown today - no Christmas shopping allowed, only grocery and drug stores are open. Which is good cuz this time of year our greenhouse is empty.

I washed/baked all our masks today and went to buy a new thermometer but the line was out onto the street, only one customer allowed at a time at the drug store. J has cold symptoms so I hope to get a working thermometer tomorrow. I offered the horsey rectal thermometer but he turned it down.

Last week I was stunned by the sky - there was a ridge of clouds that were just the right height to simulate the low Cascade foothills of my home. I ran to J and said, "Come look, I'M HOME!" *sigh*

I'm working on getting Mag a fancy shiny puffy coat to wear on our neighborhood walks. I've fallen for this Pfiff model (they make great stuff) and so far I've ordered it 3 times. Once was too small, once was too large, and I'm hoping that the next one will fit. I had completely forgotten that the Horseware *and* Weatherbeetas run very, very large, so ordering a "true-to-size" blanket was problematic. It's a pretty thing, though.

My theory is that Mag will be calmer on our walks if he's warm. He hates being cold and Winter walks naked are a real challenge. I've seen him go from hyper alert to half asleep just on the application of a blanket. My plan is to not let Winter go by with him at home, but get him out into traffic and do our best.

About 10 years ago everyone started wearing shiny puffy coats. Since they make even skinny people look fat, they're not for me. But Mag's getting one! The apex of 2010 Cologne fashion!

Too small, his butt AND his belly are hanging out. (My camera overexposes my horse, making him seem cleaner than he is, and my blanket, making it look light blue.)

I watched a vlog yesterday about a German theme park with a Western theme, with very negative portrayals of Indians. The arguments were interesting - does America have a "cover-up culture" where we try to erase things that are uncomfortable? Would America have a theme park about Germany and would it include anti-semitism flyers?

Anyway the arguments pointed me to an NPR article that asserts that the term politically correct is not politically correct anymore. Which cracks me up from the perspective of living in Germany, where people don't give a fig about behaving PC.

Lately I've been rushing to J's office to tell him yet another word we cannot use anymore, cuz it's not PC. Imagine my delight when I got to tell him this one!

I finally found Best Foods mayo in Germany. In what I'm calling "travel size" *lol*

I'm so happy to have it, I don't care. I bought an entire box of them.

Hooray hooray hooray! I'm so happy you now have access to some Best Foods without having to drive to England or have it shipped in from the states. Cool pix with the clouds.

JK, thank you for understanding. It's the little things that are so important overseas. Does England have it? I'm glad you got the cloud-hills!

What about the "Sweet Onion Hot Dog Sauce"????? Is that not completely weird?!

Do you have a fleece (or wool) cooler for Mag? I use those a lot this time of year when I'm trailering away from home. She gets too hot in her field blanket (medium-weight) but chills easily if she's naked. The fleece is a nice weight.

Lockdown sucks, but being sick is worse. I hope J feels better soon.

Aarene, that's odd considering there are no real hot dogs in Germany. Maybe it's a product some Americans miss from the South?

Mag has a fleece cooler but it's so thin it doesn't do much in Winter. It's perfect for tacking up in Summer rain though.

I am sorry that everything is so closed down. It makes it hard.

I too like the idea of a wool cooler because it will breathe for him. Carmen hates the cold as well. These desert horses!!

Why do you call Helmans "best foods mayo"? We just call it Helmans here. Is it a PNW thing?

jVo, I'm always happy to see someone from far, far away reading my blog. If you call it Hellmann's, you are far, far away from Seattle: ) It's the same product but there's some sort of Mississippi divide where the name changes. Thankfully the entire country can enjoy that taste, no matter the name. I've been getting it for Christmas every year in a package from my mother since moving to Gemrany in 2007. Now I can buy it here! Tiny, but the real stuff: )

So glad you can get your Mayo now. Something about finding something you treasure during a pandemic makes it extra special. And finding rugs to cover Arabians can be frustrating because of their short backs.
