I learned today that there is a band in Texas called Dirty White Horse. J says I should send them images of Mag for their album cover.
One of the many allures of horses, besides their presence, power, smell, is the way they feel when you run your hand along their chest. This is a sensation I haven't enjoyed for a very long time. It's just no fun to touch him.
It hasn't been quite cold enough to keep a blanket on Mag 24/7, so I only blanket at night when it drops below zero. Every morning when freed of his blanket, he rolls in the mud, coating himself ears to ankles in thick black mud.
The other day I really worried he had rain rot because I couldn't find the skin under the dried mud with my fingers. I curried and finally was relieved to feel none of the pustules I know so well.
Today it's spitting snow but mostly rain and Mag's brown mane and tail are dripping coffee-colored goo like a 68 Ford Escort.
I look at facebook and see glistening white Arabians, silver tails brushing the pristine sand they live on in Saudi Arabia and California.
Mag nuzzles my wrist, planning his eventual removal of my swatch. The tip of his muzzle is actually soft.
The farrier actually complained the last two times he was here, "Why are his legs soaking wet?" I asked, "Do you prefer mud?" Cuz Mag is a "white" horse with 4 pitch black stockings lately. He said, "Can I use one of these towels on him before I start?"
Tonight fireworks are illegal, as are gatherings, but there are a few from last year, going off. Mag is out there wary but not panicked, he's pretty good with Silvester.
Tomorrow he'll be TEN YEARS OLD.
Then I found this article from Horse and Hound and it made me feel so much better. I wish I could have contributed:

My favorite is the mare Breeze, who is claimed to loathe Summertime due to the lack of deep mud to roll in. My horse feels her pain.

no photos???? I'm disappointed! but I do love the pictures in the article.
Watch this (skip ahead to :36 where she says, in a beautiful accent, "the snow...is dirty...") and laugh.
Mag must be normal for a white horse. It is nice she can be out, I am sure some white's are kept tied or in a small stall to keep them clean. Mag can be a real horse. Happy New Year.
Aarene, did you miss sending a link?
EllieK, when I saw the Lippizanner stallions I knew for certain they were never allowed out into the light of day, and never felt the touch of earth, at least, not in show season.
You are right, the Lippizanner training farm is near where I live. You can tour the stables, all stalls are cleaner than some houses. In the winter when they are not traveling they have afternoon shows ppeople could go see until this year.
Ooops, here's the link:

Aarene, when Toby stuck his face in over his eyes I shouted Ohhhhhh!!!!!!!!
I didn't finish it but I hope that dog is going into the back of a truck, and not into a car. Or better, just walking home. "The snow is dirty" *LOL*! If Mag does that this year, I promise to get a photo. So far, no snow....
Aarene, ok I watched the rest of it, "Don't you dare!"
All the "normal" dogs add so much to the video.
Aarene, I just showed Toby to J and we both laughed so hard. I'm crying: )
