I have this feeling I'm having more good days than bad on Mag's back. I guess there is documented proof if I just read this blog.
Ani asked me today to help her think of a nickname for Rudi as the big mare navigated the trails in her ultra slow pace. I suggested Stinker, cuz she's a brat and stinks (she sweats so much and has that unwashed QH smell). Then I remembered that's Gollum's nickname.
She said Mira's nickname was Little Moth and she asked me what Mag's is. I don't have one for Mag. But J calls him Mock, which is just the German pronunciation for Mag. I guess I should ask a Polish person how Mag's name is spoken.
Anyway the big mare fussed somewhat less today when Mag stopped to drink from his favorite puddle. I still can't believe how much water Mag can get out of a puddle.
Ani asked if I was cold in my tshirt but it's still unseasonably warm. As we rode that 10.3KM I sat back and enjoyed, thinking I could get used to this - nothing going wrong, just plodding around. I even trotted Mag 3 or 4 times today but when we were with Rudi, she showed us she does not approve of young Mag trotting behind her.
We talked about dressage movements and practiced them together, for the first time, on trail. I admitted I never knew there are two types of leg yields - one on the rail and one not. I'd always learned the quarter line to rail version, but there is another in both Germany and America! I rode out in front of Rudi and practiced both leg yielding and bending side to side. Eventually I started to ask Mag for both Travers and Renvers and Ani asked me what I was doing. I said, "I'm just doing my best to teach Mag shoulder in and haunches in, but he doesn't understand yet."
The sun came out and I told Ani how much I'd love a single day without sun in my eyes. She loves it.
I spent a half hour grazing him across a hay field on our way home, and noticed people in costumes. WTH - oh yes, it's Karneval weekend. That means I need to get my butt to Aldi and get lots of food for the days we cannot shop. Ani said how much she hates Karneval. I told her J feels the same, but I love it, even though I don't celebrate. It's a part of the culture here and I enjoy watching people go crazy. We have our own parade in our village, and everyone walks to it (there is much less drinking and driving here).
How little food do we have? I pulled out all our food tonight - one frozen pizza and one box of frozen spinach.
Recently J and I came up with our band name. It's Pop & Condiments. Cuz that is what our fridge is mostly filled with. We often have no food, but we have pop and condiments. Coke Zero, bottles of sparkling water, and more condiments than you can shake a stick at.
Our latest hit single is "No eggs at all." J and I crack each other up.
The sun just disappeared after 2 weeks straight. There's an eerie fog and lots of wind. I'm wearing shorts but when I went outside to feed more hay, I realized Mag was probably freezing so he got his blanket. I know he loves it cuz he falls alseep as soon as I put it on.
I'm watching a movie set in London (Rubinrot, in German) and am craving Treacle pie so much! The one White Horse Pilgrim made for us.
Although I only like NY as a friend, I love London.

No food? Are you still doing low carb? We have two freezers packed with proteins of all kinds. We could probably survive an apocalypse. My chinese horoscope says Im a rat and well known for hoarding food. Ive just recently discovered the pressure cooker to transform said proteins into pulled pork, korean short ribs, and the oh so amazing bone broth.
As for MAG ... LOVE LOVE 💕! Whats crazy is that you would even listen to someone who would tell you that he needs 3 months of professional training. What you need is more miles and wet saddle pads. Keep trotting and yielding! You are on the right track!
I've got two band names:
For the band that tours, it's "52 Thoroughbreds," because that will be circling the globe forever.
For my other, stay-at-home band, it's "The Inevitable Zucchinis". You never expect to see the band, but they show up everywhere.
I would love more sunshine.
ND please send me a bone broth recipe, I'd love to learn that. This is embarrassing but one of my favorite quick snacks/comfort foods is Top Ramen soup. The Ramen goes to Mag and Bellis (they love the crunch) and the Top goes in my mug. Probably mostly MSG but I sure love MSG. We have a college dorm size fridge with its attached college dorm size freezer. One third of it is full of ice cube trays: ) I don't mind having a small kitchen/appliances because it's impossible to forget about a food item and have it go bad. I go grocery stopping every other day. I think you see why there are no Costcos in Germany: )
Roast 2-3 pounds beef bones in oven 1 hour at 425.
Put bones in pressure cooker with 2-3 liters water for 2 hours on high (or regular stock pot for 12 hours).
Add carrot, celery, onion, peppercorns and pressure cook for 1 hour (or regular pot for 6 hours).
Salt, season and enjoy.
Or make soup, or stew.
;-)
Pressure cooker saves 15 hours of time.
I was not convinced, and all the pshh noises scare me. What if it explodes? But my husband loves gadgets and he got the instant pot on sale (he also loves a sale). When I discovered how easy and fast it was to make bone broth, I was hooked. The bone broth takes homemade soups from good to incredible, particularly for mouth feel (I credit the gelatin and collagen). Favorite site for inspiration is nom nom paleo.
Today its back to the barn after 6 days of absence, and a deep ice freeze which has made trail access treacherous. I might be condemned to the indoor arena. Wish me luck! No tshirt sun days here.
I agree that clearly Mag does not need to be sent off for training. You are training. And yes, there are definitely more good rides than bad.
I am jealous of your weather.
T-shirts?~! Not here! Breaking records for cold! A frozen, snow covered landscape!
