Mac & Cheese diversion

This video cracked me up, and I just now forced J  to watch. He didn't grow up on Kraft Mac and Cheese so he wasn't amused.

No kiddies, we don't eat an entire plate like that. Our not-so-wealthy parents would divide it between our siblings and serve it with a slice of ham or a hot dog. I babysat for a lady who baked it in the oven mixed into a pan of tater tots, what an invention.

We didn't eat it alone...until we hit our 20s and were lazy college students.

I fondly remember making a box and eating the entire thing in one serving. Pure starch heaven. I didn't do this just one time.

Aldi recently had USA week with Trader Joe's Mac and Cheese and I bought a box as a treat for J. He was not thrilled, it's not in his food history. I cannot imagine thinking of this as "just so-so."

It's the ultimate comfort food for Generation X!

But not here....




The kid who loves it all has a lot of fans, I'm one of them.

J said Mag was "yellow" today. What can I do. The rain has returned and he's grinding his body into the muck daily. I said "no more grey horses" but here I am. He's yellow/brown at the moment, but cute.

I grew up with Kraft dinner too. I never liked it. I make my own 'mac and cheese' and I like it (probably because it's real cheese).

Teresa, I tried making it from "scratch" once but failed: ) It's not easy!

Little Jefferson would live on it if he could. They like it with fish sticks! There are pizza places that actually sell mac n cheese pizzas!!! Hope Mags cellulitis is doing better

Kraft Mac and Cheese is a comfort food for me. I still have some on hand to help cope with bad days.

The kids and I invented our own recipe for baked mac and cheese (starting with the recipe in Joy of Cooking, but you know I can never just follow a recipe!) that has cauliflower, sun-dried tomatoes, mild green chilies and sharp cheddar...and sometimes we leave out the macaroni now. It's amazeballs, but it has pretty much nothing in common with the stuff in the box.

I finally put Fee's rain sheet on her this week--our weather has been mild AND DRY, so pretty. But now the rain and mud is back, so into her sheet she goes!

Cute video, but I certainly hope they didn't ask those kids to try them all in one sitting! My oldest grandson loved to fix us mac and cheese, out of the box, when he was young, from scratch (with less success) when he got older... Allan's not a big fan, but I like it now and then.

I love this! It’s funny what the German kids liked, the broccoli version and the herb?!

Are you still randomly crave this (the traditional box kind), and pretty much eat the whole box, and then go another six months without having any. When we were kids my sister and I would make it for lunch with added hotdogs, fancy!

I make a simple mac and cheese from scratch more often, but it really has no relation to the box version!

Aarene, the weather turned "normal" again here, still pretty dry so Mag has to try really hard to get dirty. It's cold enough to snow, and I am on snow watch.

Evensong, I think they did all that in one sitting! If I'm lucky enough to be in a big city with a big grocery store with a little International section, it usually has Kraft Mac & Cheese because it's one of the most-missed foods.

Irish, the entire box - yes. It's not really that much! I thought it was strange that the kids liked the fancier types too. Hot dogs, chopped up in it, I remember that. Sheldon Cooper style Mac & Cheese. I tried making it from scratch in a crock pot but the cheese was wrong. You really need Velveeta or something similar. The orange powder is the best though. Hungry now: )

Haaa! My kids just had that for dinner last night - you're right about who gets the whole box??? You don't make mac and cheese because you're rich with options - you mae it because you're either an adult wishing for something nostalgic tasting, or you're trying to make the budget stretch! I slice up hot dogs and put peas in it and thus stretch one .59 cent box among three kids. (Of course, there's my oldest Celiac son with his gluten free box that costs $3.00 that always blows my budget out of the water, but I love him so I guess I will keep him.)

On a side note, I found out last night that the orange powder is gluten free, so in the future I can boil some bulk gluten free noodles and put the powder over it for much cheaper than $3.00 a box.... win!

Becky, right on. My last trip home, I bought a bunch of boxes and left the noodles at my mom's house, and took the orange packets back to Germany. On my low-carb diet, I put the powder on green beans. It was ....OK. My ultimate diet splurge would be to eat an entire box of Kraft Mac & Cheese, not sharing with anyone.

Have y'all tried spaghetti squash? I was skeptical, but it's actually pretty good!

But not as good as Kraft dinner.
