To anyone who has loved ones in the military away for Christmas...I only had a friend on active duty in Kuwait and I learned a little about army life from her. They have their own complete nomenclature! Anyway, it's a sweet song of a soldier missing home, directed at Churchill.
We didn't have much for presents this year which frustrates the kid left in me that wants it to be all about the giving of presents! But......
....to my surprise J downloaded A Christmas Story for us to watch - making it really feel like Christmas. This film does not exist in Germany, of course.
Have you ever sat down and paid attention to that film? It's filled with exquisite text. We kept pausing it (what you can't do on live TV) and I'd try to explain what was just said, although I missed a lot of it too, to mumbling/accents.
When the film ended, I laughed, "If we were in Seattle, the film would restart right now!"
I'm so happy for a gift of home, a little home, here in Germany.

Someone put a Christmas bag of horse snacks at my stall door and I asked and asked but no one has taken credit so far. TWO different people said Merry Christmas to me in ENGLISH tonight at the barn. I was so surprised. Mag didn't like his Christmas present but that can wait. He got a huge bucket of beet pulp.
Tomorrow in Germany is Second Christmas Day (really) and we'll see if my husband and I go caching in the rain, or if I just spend the day at the barn again. No worries, Bellis also got snacks today. The cat, oops.

You know I'm not a fan of the winter holidays, but there is a song by John McCutchen that I really love. I used to play a recording of it on the radio every year, the station owned an obscure live recording of McCutchen introducing it and telling about when he was playing a festival in Norway and towards the end of every set, a small group of older men would come in, stay for the last tune, and leave. At the final set of the day, he jumped off the stage and grabbed one of the guys and asked what was up. The guy told him that they'd heard the tune on the radio and had called up the group so they could all come to the festival...because the story in the song had happened to them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJi41RWaTCs
RE: missing the dialogue of movies, we always watch movies at home with the captions turned on. Since Jim and I both have hearing loss (and the kids are English language learners) the extra language support is useful for everything.

I always watch movies with caption on too. I hate being hard of hearing at such a young age...
