Fun in the pasture

I was trying to very very carefully lead them through the treacherously muddy narrow path to the pasture - just leading Bellis and trusting that Mag, being nervous in a new place, would hang behind us (like Mara always did, she never had the nerve to go through the path first).

Well, about halfway through the path, Mag got excited and squeezed past us. Then he saw the pasture. First he went the wrong way, downhill. Then he found the way to the gate.  Bye bye!

The next video is messed up because the donkey was bumping into me and wrapping her lead rope around me.

Then he rolled.

6 times.

The donkey gave him a few little warning kicks to tell him not to get too carried away, but then she instigated some play herself.

Once he had run around a bit, he surprised me. He went back to the barn! Perhaps it's a novel experience for him to be able to go from barn to pasture and back on his own.  Anyway I'm impressed that he's so brave and independent to leave us. It frustrated me when Mara would stand at the path and refuse to go through it unless the donkey went first.

It was sprinkling out and grey, impossible to get action shots. This is his first run across the pasture.

I like that he doesn't go top speed like Mara - I was always scared she'd crash out there. The middle part of our field is a spring and that water/mud also slowed him down.

Clean for a few moments.

Last night when I checked him at 2 AM he was staring and snorting across the street, probably there were deer out there. At 6 AM he was a bit calmer. Is there so much more to see here?

You missed a spot, I told him.

Our pasture has never had so much grass in January. I'm sure they'll take care of that and it will be bare soon.

I only let them out for 2 hours because I'm not sure he's used to grass. What a bummer to have to come in after so much fun.

Then I photographed hooves (not easy because he doesn't know how to pick up his feet, and once you have a hoof he won't hold it for you). Then I betadined the rear hooves because of deep cracks into the heel bulbs. He also got tied here for the first time because he was fidgeting so much. It didn't stop the fidgeting, but it was a good first tying experience. He's gonna get a lot of standing tied lessons because he's impatient about it.  In the image below, note how the rope is on the wrong side of him. He eventually did turn a complete circle, and no freaking out, whew.

Then I washed his tail for the first time. After I dried it with a towel, he took the towel in his mouth and started flipping it around. What a fun personality he has.

Right now it's 2 PM and for the first time, he has a sleepy look on his face, he's exhausted from all the newness.

His tail says it all. :-) And I know, while they are having so much fun running around the pasture, part of you is thinking, "Don't fall down, don't fall down." I had a grey horse once that soon turned "Mason County brown" after the first rain. We know that you will turn him into an educated horse. So happy for you.

Mag doesn't look scared at all. He looks happy and excited. I'm amazed at how well he gets along with the donkey. Has he seen donkeys before?

KB, interestingly, when I showed my friend S the videos, she said "Wow, he really is careful out there and doesn't run flat out stupidly like my horse!" I agreed, Mara used to scare the crap out of me because she ran at top speed and left 5 meter long tracks in the mud where she slid to a stop in front of the fenceline. I hated it when she ran. It will be fun educating him, he's so easy so far. He backs out of my way when I wave my fingers in the air. It will be so interesting to find out how unique he is from the other two I've had now. "Mason County" - I don't get the reference.

NM, I highly doubt he's seen a donkey, but he still hasn't heard her bray: )

Mag is like "This is mine? I live here? Wow! Awesome!" He looks quite happy, and smart about his feet, good boy!

But the dirt...I'm so glad you like to clean! I was just thinking yesterday that I love my brown horse, because I brushed him up and you couldn't tell he was probably still plenty dirty. But Mag is happy, and Bellis too.

Congratulations!!! I love his build and it looks like he is having fun figuring it out! Again, Congratulations! I look forward to hearing all about your adventures big and small.

Oh, Mason County brown because our dirt here has a red-brown tint to it, and it tends to stain. My white riding pads would get stained also from the backs of the horses.

And with all that exuberant running around, did he cough? (I'm guessing not) :)

Annette, this is the comment I've been waiting for. You are so astute. I've heard nothing, so far. Thank you for asking.

In that first video, I can hear him thinking, "I'm free, I'm free!". His big trot is so pretty, and that flagged tail of his says so much about his excited and happy mood. Bellis gets around pretty quickly, it was fun seeing how happy and playful she was acting, she is faster than I thought she'd be. I couldn't wait to get home from work so I could see if you posted anything about him. The videos and photos were wonderful to see! I am so glad that you are sharing him with us. Have fun!

Mag looks so solid! Love his bone structure & handsome face. Seems to have a brain too, think he might be the complete package. :)

Yay!!! He is SO GORGEOUS!! What an incredible, floaty trot! I can't wait until you get to ride it and tell us what he feels like hehe.

He missed a spot?? I didn't notice! He looked fully covered in mud to me lol. (teasing)

I knew he would be okay given time. He was excited, but he just doesn't strike me as a total scaredy cat. He sounds like he has such a fun personality! Chrome likes to grab towels and twirl them around too. :D
