My German's pretty good but my medical German is not so great, so I was kind of nervous about taking the call from the vet today. For 3.5 hours I sat near a phone and worried about what would happen. Even J did not understand the guy perfectly on the phone yesterday.
Thankfully I could understand him, and when I questioned one word, he immediately said the English word (show-off!), larynx.
He said the horse coughed twice during the exercise test and then 5 more times as it progressed. (So not miraculously healed afterall! I hope the owner was there to see.)
He did an endoscopy and found results of an old infection that was never treated in the nasopharynx, larynx and trachea; if I understand correctly he found irregular mucus in those three areas. He found nothing wrong in the lungs.
He took a sample and I authorized that it be sent to a lab, why not.
He said he's giving Haegerhof antibiotics for the horse, and in 3 weeks he'll return to check on him. I said I'll pay for everything except the medications, that is the owner's responsibility. Actually usually if a horse fails an exam, the buyer doesn't have to pay, but that is not what we agreed to this time. I'm going to ask if Haegerhof will cover the next exam regardless of the result.
Shopping for a horse seems to be not only a tour of Germany's worst hooves, but Germany's most negligent owners. If your horse is slightly lame, you might let it go and see if it comes around on its own. But coughing, eye issues, those require a vet immediately.
I can't help but speculate what Haegerhof's intention was when they told me the horse was 100% better, no coughing indoors or out while ridden. Were they hoping I'd believe that and order a simple exam with no stress test/endoscopy? Did they honestly think he was better, perhaps from only riding at a walk and not eliciting coughing? Or does their interpretation of no coughing include "just a few" coughs?
I still like the horse, but don't like Haegerhof any better than in 2012.

I'm with you, not too keen about the seller but that horse is just made for you, he may be green but he's not stupid. The way the Mag responds to you and the way you respond to him was pretty cool to see. I hope everything works out. I might not comment a lot but I haunt your blog in hopes of good news. Sounds like you found a good vet also, for the exam.
That sounds like excellent news! :0)
so, my fingers are still crossed. are we relatively confident the sellers will GIVE him the meds?
Or do you think they'll be betting on an Xmas Miracle(tm)?
Aarene, that's exactly what I said to J when he came home and he said, Und, Und, Und, Und????!! (and? and? and?)as he stepped out of our car. I was delighted that he cared so much.
I told him the story and finished with, "Now we only need to know if Haegerhof is a bunch of hippies or they will actually give the meds." J agreed to call them, tomorrow I hope. If they want to sell the (difficult to ride by strangers) horse, they had better think about listening to the vet. Their internet ad for Mag still says "Gesund." Healthy.
Tina, I showed your comment to J, so nice, you seemed to see the connection I had with the horse. Even though, as J made me admit, I didn't really want to trot the horse out there.....it worked out beautifully.
Karen, I hope....
oh, i hope this works out. I have learned so much from you, and i love to see the animals you have blossom and develop when they are taken care of. This is another horse that I know would come alive with good training, good care, good owner. I still think about that poor, hungry bay horse and hope he finds a good home.
AS I said, some people live in another universe. In that universe, the inhabitants are lacking in a conscience and empathy. It is inhabited by a lot of horse people, too. Car dealers, dog breeders, all kinds. The end justifies the means--just sell it and walk away, no matter who gets burned.
How wonderful to have the support of your hubby.
I want to be enthusiastic about Mag, but since I've had a horse with COPD, I am very cautious about getting too excited. Scarring from a long term, untreated infection can cause problems, like being prone to infections. :-(
Ugh!! I don't understand people!! I hope the antibiotics clear it up. Will you have to wait the whole three weeks before you get a new exam? I'm trying really hard not to get excited....
