Improper lifting technique limit

You know the saying an endurance horse only has so many miles in him, and one day he'll go over that limit and be broken?

That thought came to mind yesterday as I was moving hay when suddenly I torqued my back and couldn't move. I was shocked, I kept trying to move and my back said, "No, you did one too many improper lifts, that was it for me."

I stood still. It didn't hurt if I just stood still. But I was curious, I had to see if I could move, and how. I stood there so long, almost perfectly still, Mara gave me a strange look. I'm sure she could sense the pain shooting off me. Walking was agony those first couple hours.

Great. I never suspected I'd be incapable of even doing ground work with my horse, but today J had feed Mara, Bellis, and Mercer. And J spent the day taking care of me.

I am spending the weekend on the couch on a hot electric blanket, taking the upper limit of Ibuprofen, hoping that an expiration date of 2009 doesn't impact its effectiveness. I'm lying down watching Deep Space Nine and Farscape, and the sunshine streaming through the windows is infuriating because I can see how dusty the TV is. And how dirty the windows are.

Germany has this wonderful topical pain killer called Voltaren, which I never normally use, but I'm putting it on regularly.

Hopefully this will resolve in a few days, and I can at least do ground work with my horse.

Bend through the knees.....

Lift with your knees, not your back.

AND GO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR.

If you can get Traumeel in Germany, do that--much easier on the gut than NSAIDs, including Voltaren. Ask me how I know. Traumeel comes in tablets and topical, both work.

Feel better!

Darn it! I hope you feel better soon. My new farrier is German and he blurts out German phrases, so now I get a taste of your life.

I did the same thing back in September. Just picked up the muck bucket wrong, and YOW! Allan came running, but the only way I could get to the house was on my hands and knees!
Ice packs might work better than heat for the inflammation. Take care of yourself...or better yet, let J take care of you.

I agree with EvenSong. Use ice instead of heat. It's the only thing that helps control my back pain when my ruptured disc flares up.

Also, invest in a back brace for doing the heavy lifting.

I agree with the others! Don't use heat!! That makes the inflammation worse and prolongs the healing process. Use ice for twenty minutes at a time throughout the day as needed. I hope you feel better soon. The worst time I ever hurt my back I was picking up an empty cardboard box lol. It's not always how heavy things are. So yes, lift with your knees from now on! I hope you feel better quickly.
