My man helps out

The next day after work I asked my man if he’d please take a walk with me as I rode Mara – the same tiny little loop, which should only take 30 minutes max. He agreed! I got on her right in our driveway for the first time to actually ride on our street. Scary! There were boys playing soccer on a hill above us and they were right next to the road, and I kept thinking one would overshoot and kick the ball right into us. One other neighbor in a Seattle Stadium Tshirt said, “Finally riding huh?” and I said, “That’s my city on your shirt!” and told my man, “There is no such thing as ‘The Seattle Stadium’ but of course you know that.”

My man had to take the lead rope exactly where I had to emergency dismount the day before – by the chickens, and this time, neighbors too, putting up a new fence. Very scary stuff. I felt back in kindergarten but it was really nice to have the help. Finally he let go when we entered the woods and my man thought it would be funny to start running down the hill and see if Mara trotted after him. I said, “Hey! I’m trying to have fun here and you’re trying to take me out of my comfort zone!” : ) We walked along talking and laughing and it was actually quite fun.

He only had to take the leadrope again when we passed the ultimate horror house, the shepherd with all his sheepdogs on pulley lines between trees that run back and forth when they see a horse. I don’t know many people who can actually ride their horses by that house.

Afterwards I thanked him profusely, for days, warning him I will need him to do that in the future: )

Yeah, that's a lot to contend with. The first time I rode Rock, he came to a halt and lifted his head high. I looked over to see my husband throwing rocks. I said, "What are you doing? You know he's terrified that a rock will hit him."

He said, "I know. I was trying to desensitize him."

I said, "Do it when I'm not on his back! Are you trying to break my neck?"

All of my horses are used to me picking up rocks and throwing them out of the arenas, but as soon as Rock sees someone bending down to pick one up, he throws his head in the air and runs away.
