Four mares on the horizon under a waxing moon..

...as I wait for Orionids.

I saw one the other day and I wasn't even looking, I was actually watching Babylon 5 (again?) in my dimly lit living room, so I could not see clearly out the window, but a huge fireball went by, seeming to strike beyond the neighbor's mare pasture. Perhaps into our watershed.

It was white, the fireball, and took a long time to cross the sky, that is why I was able to see it.

Now I sit in my chair outside every night these last few days, looking up.

Tonight I could hear the mares on the horizon snorting as they grazed. The big Fresian, Shiela the Shetland, Aria the blond-maned chestnut Icelandic, and an old brown TB.

I sat there wrapped in the burgundy blanket my sister gave me 15 years ago, listening to Bellis chewing hay while Baasha slept behind her, full from his nightly mash. I had a glass of Austrian wine, my favorite.

It's 70 degrees out right now. It's 9:30 PM. It's been ridiculously warm the last few days, what I would enjoy except that Baasha has a full Winter coat and must be suffering, even though every morning I take his blanket off. I'm never sure how cold it will get in the night, so I put it back on in the evening.

Today my man and I did a 14-cache loop of our neighboring watershed. One trail led, unexpectedly, directly to our hay farmer's house. We heard a tractor and walked over to see if Carsten was driving. No, he was just directing, a new load of sand and synthetic paper (?) for his arena. He greeted us, "Hello Family W!" He's a sucsessfull show jumper, someone I doubt who really loves horses, but who's always surrounded by young blond females. One drove his VW wagon up beside us as we were there.

We asked about when our next hay shipment will arrive. He said this week. I doubt it. It seems that everyone we hire is a slacker. Example: our bathroom has had no one working on it in 2 weeks, while the contractors pursue other tasks.

Around the watershed...

It's fun to hike/geocache on trails I rode Baasha on, and remember that fateful day we fell through a bridge. I dream of having another horse someday to cover these trails with. I hope you all take some time to find an Orionid this weekend. Halley's little gift to us. Better yet, while your horses chew hay as soundtrack.

Alas here is the NW US, it is cloudy and raining again! No meteors for me unless it clears up.

I love standing in the barn and listening to the horses chew. It is very calming, knowing they are content and happy.

As Reddunappy said, we don't actually have a sky here--just a blank matte painting in shades of grey. I have crows bombing down from trees to the yard, picking up chicken food in the grass, and that's as close to meteors as I'm gonna get this week, sigh.

I found that "horse addiction" post you asked about--the search function was useless, so I went through the post-list!

Hey, the sky cleared (briefly) last night and I saw two! I figured you'd be proud.
