I'd just gotten my vet to agree to do a pre-purchase exam....and my husband had just started looking into loans for me to buy a horse (ack) and then this happened...
My man called Amja's owner today. (I cannot understand these people on the phone.)
They RAISED THE PRICE!
Only by 500 euros but he was already 1000 over our budget. The reason they raised the price? I assume it's their marital differences. They just see horse dealing differently. He said the horse would cost X amount when he came to our house a month ago. We discussed the price of boarding/training over the next few months. But when my man called the wife, she said she wouldn't take less than X and we were kind of shocked. NO PAPERS on this horse, and back legs that made me worrisome. I loved his personality and I loved riding him, so I was gonna go for it if my vet approved. (I didn't think he would, but he'd said my vids and photos looked fine.)
Well I'd been praying about this and when this happened, I just said "OK then."
She said, "Go on your vacation to America, we're not selling this horse, and I'll keep riding him. Think about it and talk to us in a few months if you're interested."
I don't think so.
I mean, I think I don't think so.
Ah, but he's so lovely and easygoing!
But wow that's a lot of money.
OK, patience.

Ugh, my sympathies - sellers who can't get their story straight are really, really annoying . . . but then you know that!
You're right to hold off. If you're meant to get him it will eventually work out.
Dan
That happened to me when I bought Bombay. The seller wanted $1,500. I came to her a week later with a check for $1,500 and she said, "This isn't enough. Now the price is $2,000." I said, "Why?" She said, "Because you didn't buy him the day I showed him to you."
So? She's since done that to a lot of people and I've learned it's because she gets attached and really doesn't want to sell the horse. Her horses are always on the market until someone else shows an interest, and then all of the sudden her horses become more valuable to her.
I'm sorry that the seller's greed had to get in the way of your dream.
Maybe its a sign?
Too bad its so darn expensive to ship them, my friend & neighbour is selling some of his Arabs really cheap because he just can't ride like he used to (too many injuries over the years when he had client horses)
Breathe.
Why do people have to be so difficult. Sorry girl!
But such a wonderful hubby you have!
Those people are horrible. What a horrible way to do business. No matter how much I like a horse, if that happened to me, I would walk away and never look back. The right horse will come along but those people are bullies. If you are willing to pay more, buy that mare you originally fell in love with. At least you would be getting your money worth with her.
Yeah, I know where your coming from Lytha... years ago, when I was on the search for my first horse, I went and looked at a registered paint gelding. I can still remember so much about this gelding..he was approx 16hh, and was a max white paint. He had some small spots on him, but they had essentially greyed out.
This horse was very very well trained (esp if I compare him against the horse I did by, which is Boo!)
And the ad I had found on him listed him at 1500...and after I had gone and check him out, they changed that to 2500. I told them forget it, even though even in my mind he would have been worth it. 1500 was what I had to spend, and that was that! I still wish I could have gotten him. His name was Charger. Just an unforgetable loss to me, :( even though I did buy Boo and do love the little snot!

Ack is right! Dag .
Well time will tell. Something may come to light, while away from the situations, that will make the choice clear. That's my prayer- for them too! You are the perfect and right choice as a potential horse owner.
When do you come to first home land again?

How incredibly frustrating! I guess how I'd react would be dependent on whether I felt they were jerking me around, or just like you said, had differences of opinion on the value of the horse.
If you think they're being straight with you the extra time under saddle might work to your advantage, as you'll be able to give him more of a test ride when he's more fit and you'll be able to see if he is still laid back.
I wish you were closer, I have Cartman's older brother Taj(he looks like an Anglo Arab, though he is all TB) but he'd be perfect for you- he's sensitive and loves attention, plus has the smoothest floaty gaits ever! He might fail the "laid back" test however:)
I'd love to see someone that cares for their horses like you do get him.
Well that just sucks. I really dislike people who do that.
I'm thinking along the lines of Tina. Any chance of getting the mare you keep going back to in this process?
I think NuzMuz might be on to something here. The owners might be exhibiting signs of greed or they are suddenly seeing the horse as more valuable and are reluctant to let go. At any rate, it is wrong and I hope they reconsider the price they had him listed for. Some people...
To answer questions about the possibility of buying Wiszi, the mare I fell for, well she's no longer for sale. She was also more expensive and had her own conformation issues that made me refuse to pay so much. I still think about her a lot though.
That is so frustrating! I'd be sorely tempted to take it as a sign a walk away. But understand the emotional roller coaster it must be!
I suppose still sticking with the
"if it's meant to be, it will be"..sounds like you are off on vacation soon, so reassess when you get back? Your feelings about the horse over the vacation and when you see him again will tell you what has to be done!
Still, ARGHHH!!
Is the horse market there so much stronger than here? I mean, I know that Germany is the most economically stable place in the EU right now, but it seems like the uncertain economy would have some bearing on people's attitude about selling.
Perhaps it is just that a lot of these breeders you're going to are independently wealthy enough that selling the horses isn't really the focus of the business plan?
Maybe it is time to start riding Bellis. :)
That really sucks that they went up on the price. How much does the vet pre-purchase exam cost over there? Hang in there. . .
Lytha, I am so sorry. I get so mad at the way horse people do business over there.
I do hope things work out for you, whatever is best.
Damn. Not cool actions by the sellers. I have to echo some sentiments that maybe what will be will be? But finding the right horse is so hard. Maybe in a few months you can save up some, or maybe something else will come on the market. Sorry for your heart in turmoil, I can feel your frustration, though not help any!
I had this happen to me with car care recently. Promised one price on the phone, another in person. One time I walked away, the other time I was stuck.
It's a crappy tactic people use. I hope another horse comes your way. I hate to see folks like that rewarded.
BUMM-ER!!!
I agree with Dan - if you're meant to get him, it will happen.
Maybe the greedy woman is just hoping you'll cave in.

That is just wrong!! Husbands and wives really need to learn to communicate lol. I'll keep my fingers crossed that she'll change her mind and let you buy him for the original price. That's wrong of her to let you get your hopes up and then change the price like that. Grr. That happened to a friend of mine recently on a truck she wanted and she waited a little longer and managed to convince them to sell it cheaper than the original price LOL! Good luck!
