Pics from the big pasture

They were on the big pasture today and I got some photos.

From this angle you cannot see the ludicrous way donkeys run - I'll keep working on this.

Here is Bellis pushing Baasha around. Not nice.

These are my super cool color-changing solar garden lights. I love them so much! I tried to photograph all the different colors but kept missing purple. I can now have colored lights in my yard all year and not be considered uncouth. I think.

Smart donkey, standing under the overhang roof to stay out of the rain.

Not-so-smart donkey couldn't remember how to get back to the barn from the pasture today. Baasha learned that the very first day - it's a circuitous route to come back to the shelter, but he remembered how he'd gotten himself to the pasture, so he remembered how to get back home again at the end of the day. Bellis cannot make this intellectual step. She stays closest to our house near the street on the pasture, and brays for help, she wants to come in but cannot remember how. Once they're locked on the grazing strips, she suddenly remembers. I hope she gets this soon, I don't want to have to rescue her every evening. (Baasha's no help, even if he wanted in he wouldn't take the lead - he just shadows the donkey whatever she does.)

I trimmed Baasha's hooves tonight and trimmed Bellis' fronts as well a little bit, just to see if she'd let me. She's good.

It's fun to see them out together. Bellis' head is so big!

Baasha's still heavily blanketed--how cold is it there now? We've had temps in the 60's (!!!!) here this week. I still throw Fee's blanket on at night, though.

Bellis might be wondering how long you will fall for the "I'm lost" trick?

They are quite the pair aren't they? lol!
How odd that Bellis can't figure out her way back to the barn. Even my chickens, with their walnut sized brains could figure out how to find their way back to their coop the first time I let them all out to free range.

Maybe Bellis wants you to make a pathway for her back to the barn using your awesome new changing colors garden lights? hehe!

They look very happy together! Donkeys do run funny; I think its hysterical. The donkey charge of the light brigade. Lucky you that you can work on Bellis' feet. Our little donkeys are horrible about it.

Hey, thanks for responding to my questions/comments.

Good point on the digital camera lol. That's too bad. I would have loved to have seen pictures of his color progression. Chrome's mom was gray and his dad black so I know he only has one gray gene. I've read that they are slower to gray out than horses with two copies. It's going to be interesting to watch him change. He's almost three now and just barely showing really faint dapples.

That's cool on the clicker training. I guess I just never noticed you mention it on your blog. :D Zep (donkey) loved doing clicker training. At one point I was able to pet him all down his left side and I could pet his right side by reaching over his back because of clicker training. Now that he's on thirty acres and because I get lazy over the winter he's back to being so skittish I can't touch him. I really need to pen him up and work with him every single day, but I'm worried about the braying too if he's penned up completely alone. He really needs his hooves done though so our neighbors may just have to deal with it. Morning Bray farm has one of their donkeys riding so they must do some training with them. They may just not post much about it, but I've for sure seen pictures of them riding one.

Baasha sounds adorable shaking hands. Maybe you can get a video of it sometime? If you can find a treat or maybe with the ear scratching I would think you could easily do clicker training with Bellis. Zep will do anything for treats so it's easy with him. Hang in there. You will find something that works for her too.

I thought donkeys were exceptionally smart?
