and this is a really, really friendly Winter. So far. You never know until April here.
(All of these photos were stolen from the Internet. I'll get my own soon..promise.)
We've only had a few days of snow (not months!) and only a few weeks of horrible frozen solid mud.
I just cannot take the lack of color anymore! The green is year round where I come from, but here....
Most German trees are naked, from November to April. How many months is that.....5?. Holy crap, that's almost half a year of black, grey, brown and white.
But this is a nice Winter. It's 45 out right now.
The geese started flying north last weekend. I was tempted to be hopeful.
I planted my February seeds in two incubators, one for home, one for work. They are supposed to give me hope for the possibility of new life, but I cannot stand it - it's just grey everywhere I look. My horse refuses to go to pasture because there's nothing worth the trip.
I know I have an avoidance problem when it comes to photographing ugly things. But I'll try to get the camera out so you can see the suckitude.
Even WHP a few miles north of us has a storybook quality to his grey. We have no storybook here.
The grass is brown, in hibernation.
Speaking of that, 3 of my goldfish did not survive the long freeze and this morning I found them dead. So sad. Der, Die, Das, so sorry to lose you to the heartless season.
I think I have 3 more in that pond, I hope. Worse Winters never killed them off so it must just be this grey, they got sick of staring at it and gave it all up.
It's also foggy and dangerous to drive. A good opportunity for me to use those cool fog lights on my car. Sadly the fog dies away when I hit Cologne every day. That city is weather proof.
My friend Tami sent me a photo of my bra trail (have I told you about my bra trail in Fall City?), and it was bright green, with ferns, moss, and tall conifers.... the smell of the Cascades, I've almost forgotten.
I tell myself rationally there will be pale, lime-green leaves in April, but it's so far off, and February had to have this extra day this year.
I dislike you strongly, German Winter. Even the mildest one I've seen yet, I long for the soggy mossy non-stop green of the Evergreen State.
And yet I must admit, there is something about experiencing four distinct seasons. Seattle has rain, rain, less rain, and then rain. It's perfect for me. But here, there's
1. BITTER COLD ASSAULT on MANKIND
2. Innocent pastel beckoning sweetness
3. DEADLY INESCAPABLE HEAT with no A/C
4. falling leaves, lying leaves, crunching leaves forecasting despair.
I'll let you know when it ends - I'll be ecstatic.

If it helps, stupid NOAA forecast rain rain rain rain rain for the next week...and this morning there was 3inches of damnable white stuff. Pix on FB, I'm too depressed to post them on the blog today.
(At work, 45 miles south of the Farm, the sun is out and the landscaped trees are green. There aren't any "real", aka wild, trees in Shoreline, of course).
Ha, I am so sick of this weather here.... The green is not helping!!! I have started taking a butt load of vit.D.... In hopes that I can at least be somewhat cheerful as the rain pours down day in and day out.... I miss the sunshine... I miss 90+ degree temps! The place we have is not the greatest in terms of being insulated... I just keep telling myself, 1 1/2 to 2 years is all we have left!! Then hopefully we can find a good paying job somewhere else...preferably in a place that has true summers, and maybe some snowy winters....:)

Love it, Lytha. I tell everyone I meet how much fun it is to read about your life in Germany. Every single thing you share, fascinates me. I've told you before how much I love Europe. You're bringing it to my kitchen counter every day. I love your non-horsey posts as much as their equine siblings. More please!!!!!
Karen
We have had a week of fog here and I am starved for a blue sky.
It's there, somewhere. I'm tempted to fly somewhere just to get above it.
Now you know what month you need to travel out of town. :)
yup we have endless winter too. But since our grass usually turns brown in July from no rain we have 9 months of brown grass, some covered in snow some just ugly. I love summer and wish it would get her soon, sigh,
Lytha, I feel for you completely. I lived there for 3 years-I'm from Texas and went into light-deprivation state and completely mourned the sunny days, greenery and brilliance of having longer Spring and Summer seasons here in the states. Anyway, it can be extremely dreary. My friend had a baby while we were in Germany, one day, he was 2 1/2 years old, we were all outside, he pointed to the sky with wide eyes and said, "The sun! Look, the sun!" We all stood there in shock, realizing it was the FIRST time he'd truly SEEN the sun. It was devastating.
Anyway, let me know if you want to do some care packages. There are simple things I'd love from Germany, such as more beer coasters that are everywhere. I'll send you good packages. I REMEMBER what it is like to live in Germany. Been there, done that. My husband is a Sheriff's Deputy for Harris County (Houston) for the 20+ years we've been back. But, it seems like we were there yesterday. I'm 43...was there very young. Anyway, email me at FindingLana@yahoo.com and we can exchange addresses and start off with small carepackages of things to exchange. It would be fun. And I live in Texas, we have EVERYTHING for horses around the corner.

aarene, snow? ick!
tara, i guess that's one thing i don't miss: sun. there are way more sunny days in germany than seattle as you know. last year i was getting sick of the non-stop sunshine!
karen, i'm glad you're enjoying it. i don't know how many more years i'll be here but the day i close this blog will be the day i'm home again: ) i'm going to another barn tonight and i have my camera with me!
breathe, traveling is something i really wish we could do, but home repairs are taking all our funds right now. seems ridiculous to be in europe and just stay in one place. *sigh*
crystal, i should wear my sunglasses that make everything more colorful!
lana, i've been collecting beer coasters for you: ) just need to go out more so i can get a bigger variety. you're getting the cologne beer types mostly because they are adamant in this region about its beer and it's impossible to get yummy dark beer coasters. oh well. but to be honest, about the sun - i never really had that in seattle either. that's why it's so green there: )
Aww Lytha, if its any consolation, getting tired of the mud, mud and more mud here in Washington!!! I cant wait for Spring either!!!
You know, when I leave here, even for the East side of the state, I always miss the green. I have some new snow pics I will post on my blog, pretty, but Fir trees in the background!!!
Oh, the European grey winter! Where the melancholy side of Tolkien originated. The dullness and cold that sent the hobbits packing indoors to grab mugs of beer at the Green Dragon. Oh, for a roaring fire and good company to tell stories of travel and adventure!
At least we do have a bit of green here, and the occasional sunny day. As for the rest, well melancholia is an artform.
I totally understand..I cant stand to take photos anymore because I am sick and tired of the same grey, foggy, dark Dutch landscapes..Im so over it.
