Three following a rolling thing

Silly Baasha.

I use this tube-shaped gardening sack to carry hay in - you might have seen it before (I also use it for yard clippings).

Yesterday Baasha was standing next to the barn and he nudged it with his nose hoping for some fresh hay. I looked up in time to see it start to roll away from him slowly. I thought, "Oh dear...."

Then I thought, "Oh, it will hit a tree and stop" but it just barely missed a tree before heading for the next one. I thought, "Ok that one will stop it" but it just barely missed again and kept rolling.

By this time it was headed right for the hang, where I knew nothing would stop it.

It rolled further and Baasha threw his head up, eyes huge, and he snorted loudly: "IT'S ALIVE!!!"

I laughed and stopped what I was doing to watch. It slowly rolled onward. Baasha's head got even higher and he snorted this long drawn out worried sound. I laughed and slapped him on the butt and told him, "You did that! Now go see what you did!"

He hesitated in fear, and then obeyed me, he carefully followed the rolling thing. I was right beside him, curious where it would end.

I saw this grey flash on my right and turned to see the cat running to catch up with us to follow this odd rolling thing.

The three of us advanced together and then it went over the cliff and down the steepest part. We followed to the edge, cat in front. Of the three of us, only the cat followed over the ledge. At the bottom it finally came to rest next to a post. Mercer sniffed it and looked up like, "Hay bag."

I climbed down there and picked it up. I came up to Baasha and threw it straight up in the air and caught it. He backed a step and then realized I was taunting him and he doesn't like to be teased. "This is why we cannot have play balls around here," I told him.

I guess you had to be there but trust me it was funny, mostly because of Baasha's worry. As a youngster he would dig holes while tied and then spook at them. I believe he's over his fear of self-made holes now.

These pics were taken yesterday. There is no snow in these pics, just ice. Even Baasha's tail froze! Yes that is a pile of manure in the first photo, but without the help of a blow torch, I cannot remove it.

The pics give you an idea how steep our hang is, and this is the not-so-steep part. The steep part does not come into the story because the hay bag stopped rolling before it got there.

Thanks for the photos of your "hang." Seems like all I've seen before are your hayfield--I had no idea how steep the hills were close to the house.
Silly Baasha! Sounds like some people I know--make your own drama so you can get all excited! What a brave kitty Mercer has become!

Never a dull moment in your life is there! I can just picture the three of you venturing down the steep hill! Too funny and scary it looks pretty steep!

Man that cracked me up about the self dug holes, then spooking!
Funny escapades with run away hay tubes!
Looks very frozen world there...we are still in a foggy, other worldly, haze.
Love your adventurous Mercer kitty!
Our Freyda cat ran by me in the house the other day..I recognised the frenzied...gotta protect my space look on her face as she looked out the window. I opend the door and she ran out and then froze, puffed up big, and then made a dash for the gate-where another little kitty was peering into the yard! Hilarious, attack cat!

Hahaha, what a cute story. I'm glad Baasha grew up to be a brave and wise old man. :)

I think he was more worried that his hay bag was escaping than worrying over it being alive lol

A perfect blog post! Loved this story, especially the part about spooking at "self-made holes." LOL. Brava!

I am surprised - I almost did not blog this because I thought, "How boring is my life that I have to blog about this?" but I guess the alternative is to blog about my several hours cutting down blackberry brambles....*lol*

Cute story! I'm with cdn, I think Baasha was more worried about his food getting away than the thing being alive.

Funny the cat joined in.

I'm guessing that you don't have hay delivetred in round bales.
