Today I was totally surprised to see two adorable donkeys in #72, the hippie lot. I guess the hippies can do something totally cool besides the native dancing and flower arranging - donkeys!
Although I'd seen an odd horse trailer next door since feeding Baasha this morning, I had no idea what was inside.
Then I was watering the plants and saw this dark brown donkey face staring at me from the trailer. OMGOSH! It looked just like a dark brown well known BLM burro in New Mexico named after a country singer.
I knew Baasha would be upset about it - he thinks donkeys are horses who have been to outer space and mettled with by aliens. He feels it's his duty to warn us all about the danger of outer space.
Oh but they are adorable! I talked to the nearly clothes-free owner and he told me they are therapy donkeys for kids. I asked if they could stay, because that would be so nice. He said no, they have a job to do. I said, "After this soccer match can I bring over some carrots?" and he said, "Yes, but not bread." I said, "Oh, we don't feed bread to our horses in America either!"
He explained that donkeys are "steppe" animals, and grass and bread can be too rich. (In this photo, you can see our house in the background.)
At halftime I hurried over and got to meet them. They were so sweet, but they clearly wanted to nibble my watch off my arm, or my fingers when the carrots ran out.
I went back to Baasha and he snorted at my hands suspiciously.
Then I put a halter on him and brought him over to see.
You wanna hear? WARNING! ALIEN CREATURES! he told the neighborhood with his snorting. (BTW, each time Baasha snorts, you can hear my man saying "Quatch!" to him - it means "Nonsense!")

"Quatch" means nonsense? Hmmmmm. I wonder if the people who named Bigfoot "Sasquatch" were non-believers. Baasha need to get over his alien fears and enjoy those wonderful ears.
NM, if you ever find yourself playing hangman, sasquatch is your winning word, i promise you!: )
Hahah that is too cute! I saw some BLM burros one day and I thought Dixie would react like Baasha did... but she loved them. Horses are funny.
I think he is growling at them in horse language.
But they are so o o adorable.
die sind süüüüß! kein Quatsch!
Our donkey Sparky is highly popular with the horses. I've actually had to separate him from a couple of horses because all they did was herd him around so the OTHER horses couldn't be near him and they would have him all to themselves.
What fun! Donkeys are wonderful. And cute trailer.
Too bad they can't stick around for awhile. Baasha would get used to them in no time.
Oh my gosh he does not like donkey's..lol I love that sound:P
*LAUGH* I always think "Danger Will Robinson, Danger!" when one of ours snorts at something (Heh Heh). What fun new neighbors for you guys - I love donkeys :o)
The first time Major saw donkeys he reacted in exactly the same way! He would love to live with you, I think, because of all that grass.
lol! lol! Stinkin' adorable! Baasha is so cute in his over reaction. The snorts over and over are too funny!
Apache doesn't seem worried abour donkeys. There was one at the horse camp this past weekend and she barely even looked at it.
But the mule on our Saturday trail ride.....now that's an entirely different story. I think she was very suspicious of it and wondered the same as Baasha. That aliens much have infected a horse with some strange new donkey gene.
She pinned her ears at that mule if it came close to us on the trail.
The owner said that happens a lot with horses actually. Mules are just a weird creature for many horses. They don't know what to think.
