We let the kitties out. Lander said "FINALLY!"
Mercer hangs out on the windowsill, as we expected she would.
I was worried that they'd never seen horses before, and encountering Baasha might scare them away. It wouldn't be good if cats intended to be mousers are afraid of the barn. So over the last few days I'd been bringing Lander to the barn in his crate to meet Baasha.
Baasha said, "A kitty for ME!" and actually tried to open the box with his mouth. Baasha never messes with anything with his mouth so this was new. For the most part Baasha just stood with his nose on the cage door, breathing in and out slowly, enjoying the smell of his cat. For the first time since he arrived, Lander looked scared.
But eventually he was calm, and Baasha never did anything sudden or fast to frighten him.
I also hung out in the paddock with the cat in his cage a lot, hoping to make him comfortable with it. It was more like torture for him those days, being outside but not free. I told him it's like I feel when I see people riding horses when I'm out hiking.
But it worked out beautifully when we opened the window. He just wandered around our yard, stayed away from the street, and even walked underneath the horse! The horse tried to follow him and that scared him, but as soon as Baasha saw that the cat was nervous, he stopped and held still and then the cat came back. Baasha loves cats.
I was working in the manure box, turning and spreading old manure, and the cat delightedly ran back and forth across the lawn, even climbing up the walnut tree. He ran so much he would just drop to the ground exhausted, panting like a lion. Then he'd try to catch butterflies, eat some grass, race for cover, and lie down again. Outta shape housecat? Every so often he'd run straight to me, say "meow" and ask for attention, as if he was somewhat nervous and I could comfort him.
I think the best part was when Baasha and I went down to pasture together. That was day 2, and Lander was pretty comfortable with Baasha by then. In fact, Baasha was in the lead, the cat followed, and I came in last on the path down to the ponds. Then up into the pasture, I started cleaning up poop, and Lander chased the poop as I scattered it. He hid in the long grass and stalked the horse. He would run to the horse, stand next to him, tail up, and meow back at me. He'd run between Baasha and me, like we were safety to him down there. We explored the entire lower grazing strip by the stream, and I think the cat was in heaven.
What struck me was that as uncomfortable as Baasha is down by the ponds/stream, the cat was the opposite. The reason horses do not like low, secluded areas is that predators can hide. Our cat felt happiest in this area, the hills on either side hiding him, and the trees and bushes giving him cover. I wish I had a photo of him lying half hidden in the grass, panting like a wild animal.
Then we went fishing. A neighbor came over, commented that the cat is following us like a dog, and he fished 4 trout out of our ponds. I thought Lander would jump into the ponds, he was so interested in the water. He tried to "help" me clean up floating leaves from one pond, grabbing the dripping net in his mouth and paws.
He spent a few hours up in a tree as he discovered the neighbors have dogs. I thought he'd never come down but eventually the dogs went inside.
He sleeps a deep sleep at night lately.
Today it is raining (come on, lots of rain please) and he climbed up the elderberry tree over and over, despite how wet it was. Now he keeps coming back in the house, meowing at me as if he's complaining about the rain, and going back out there anyway.
Mercer, too chicken, follows him around sniffing him everytime he comes back in. She is considerably happier these days with his energies redirected.
Last night I watched him catch a vole and immediately bring it in the house. I yelled for my man to come and we didn't know what to do - he brought it in to play with it with Mercer! It was awful. I rescued it from him cuz he obviously wasn't gonna kill it anytime soon----Holy crap he just brought another one in----just now as I was typing this paragraph. Well it's time he learned. Before he even dropped it from his mouth I clapped my hands and said OUT! and chased him back outside. He has to learn they are for outside. Goodness, will he?

Cute stories. Before you know if, the cat will be jumping up onto Baasha's back and riding him. In my case, Bombay would prefer to ride a cat.
Love that first photo! "Cat on the prowl!" And Baasha staring intently at him in his box. Poor scaredy cat Mercer--she doesn't know what she's missing out on. And Lander's bringing the vole in--his way of saying "thank you!"
It's a compliment when a cat brings you a treat. Even though the treat is not your idea of one...lol! I love how you talk about your babies!
NM, I was afraid to post so much about the cats cuz how interesting can this be... but to me it's a wonderful new experience: )
Evensong, I'll have to tell my man you said that ("thank you")!!
Wazzoo, if you made it thru that whole post you probably have a cat. But I'll be sure my man sees your comment, cuz he was kind of freaked out too. It would be a better "treat" for us if he'd killed it first: )
OMG, Baasha and Lander sound like the cutest thing ever! I love it. You should tell all the cat stories you want.
Happy rain day!
Hey, you finally got some rain! It's raining here, too, but we are tired of it! I suppose it's good for the garden, though.
I once took care of a little Paso Fino gelding who loved cats. He came from a barn with lots of cats to the place I was that had no cat, so I went to the shelter and got a barn cat. 'Tavo was thrilled.
I carried the kitty over to him, and he put his muzzle in her tummy and took a gigantic sniff of happiness...and then she whapped him with her paws to say "Back off, big nose!"
The horse would spend hours in the field watching the cat hunt for mice. :-)
Too funny he is bringing you a gift! I can just hear you yelling "OUT" ! So cool Baasha loves cats...another nice day in Germany!
Aarene, "big nose"! *lol*
Frau, "another sunny day in germany" - i say that almost every morning. until today, whew! btw, i yelled OUT and clapped my hands as loud as i could - it seems to work, but then i had to lift up the washing machine cuz that's where vole #2 ended up. ha, in germany a wimp like me can lift up a washing machine.....
Oh my heart is so happy for those two kittis and you...taking that walk was wonderful! Love it when cats follow and entreat like that!

Well great job!
That's what you got him for
ha, he's already TRAINED !
I love to see the cats prowling around in the yard. Baasha sure looks interested in that cat.
My cats had never seen horses until we moved here, but they aren't the least bit bothered. My little cat even sat on one of the horse's backs. We were astonished. They all sleep in the straw in the winter and don't move when the horses come in either! It's great to see Lander making the most of his new found freedom, I'm sure Mercer will come round in time.
LOL! I have 11 indoor cats...ROFL!! All spoiled brats!
such a nice story, tell more of them! we are lucky - Mikesch doesnt love us at it seems. He keeps his prey in the yard and doesnt offer us gifts. Kloni already wanted to get in with a mouse. But obviously he noticed I didnt like that and didnt try a second time.
Isnt it funny how different each cat is?
kacy, i hope they become as dear to me as yours was to you. i am still getting to know them and their habits, and although mercer is much braver than before, she has a long way to go.
mary, he caught a BIG ONE yesterday, and ATE IT all up! (outside) whew!
FV, i put lander up on the horse yesterday and the first thing that cat did was start licking baasha's coat. he does that to us too, which is kind of insulting like he thinks we're not clean enough?!: )
autumn, i hope they can both be comfortable in the barn someday.
wazzoo, i knew it!
keia, maybe he's not as smart as kloni, but i hope to teach him that it's unacceptable. yesterday he ate a big mouse outside without bringing it in, so maybe? i was so impressed today when lander climbed up a tall tree and then scooted himself down it again - backwards! he's a monkey! he simply loves it when we work down near the ponds. and mercer is braver whenever he's away, stepping on the keyboard like just now!
Haha sounds like it's going great!! 2 happy kitties. Love how Baasha breathed in "his" cat smell lol
You want them to eat the voles outside; if they bring them in and don't kill them they might be trying to teach you to hunt, worried that you can't feed yourselves. Cat logic. Always left us in an awkward situation between wanting to reward them for paying their share of the rent and wanting to discourage free range field mouse human training in the house.
Those hills of green are just so stunning! All that lush grass all for Baasha! I'm a little envious as we never have grass like that here....of course we don't get much rain either. So we have to feed hay all year.
Baasha is so cute with the cats, especially Lander.
You must not have coyotes there, because we can't ever allow cats to roam outside or they won't last long before a pack of coyotes gets them.
I'd love to have a barn cat, though. Oh well.
