Dead wild boar at Finally Farm

I've been looking for wild pigs since I moved to Germany 3 years ago. I'm kind of scared of them, but intrigued too and I'd just love to see one.

Not that way! Not dead at our pasture fenceline!

Backing up, I spent 4 hours today mowing under our pasture fences, trying to get a jump start on the grass before the rains come and really jump start the grass. I am always really satisfied to see a tidy fenceline.

Baasha fell asleep as I mowed. Thankfully I had the camera. So cute!

I took some pics but oh dear! Do you see the problem in these pics?

Oh, these pics are too small to see, but the top electric line was sagging.

I finished my mowing job, which in the end I got to two sides of our (relatively) square field. I also did my little "lawn" down by the ponds where I like to sit in my chair. I like to be able to wear shorts and sandals and not worry about the nettles mixed in with the grass down there.

Finally I was exhausted, and so was the lawn mower. I interrupted my man from watching NCIS on his computer and said, "Your turn! I couldn't get to some spots along the street (too steep), can you take the weed whacker to that area?"

He got changed, donned his earplugs and eye protection, and fueled up.

I went to my computer to look at peaceful pics of Baasha sleeping. That was when I noticed our sagging fenceline. Oh no! Did a tree/branch fall?

When my man was done, I asked him to take me out and show me his fencelines, and I'd show him mine, and I'd fix the fence. But he was too tired and only pointed, and I said, "Oh, OK, I'll go walk your fenceline and see!"

I found the problem, a Tpost cap had fallen off on an outside corner (we have a couple outside (backwards) corners that are tricky). I quickly fixed it and tightened everything and walked along, admiring my man's work, when suddenly....dead pig.

Omgosh, dead pig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huge! My first boar! Why did it have to be dead? And more importantly, how did it die, so oddly peacefully and unnaturally next to our fence?

Its head is bigger than a German Shepherd head, and kind of nasty looking. The coat on that animal was gorgeous though.

I hurried back to the house, half panicked, and told my man "PIG!" and I said, "We have to call the Forster!" (Forsters are state-appointed rangers who control and manage the wildlife in Germany.)

We need to be sure that the Forsters --and perhaps the local veterinarians-- are aware of this. We have not had rabies in our area for years, but we should be alert and communicate. The Forsters rely on landowners, because they can't be everywhere. I need to know what happened because I need to know if my horse is in danger, or if we are! (The Forsters have a Koeder station next to our field, that is a bait/medication station for boars. I often find the medicine wrappers nearby as they are vaccinating the boars against Schweinepest.)

I admit, mostly I want to protect my son.

I'll let you know what happens.

(PS - I took these photos today and you can see that our field has caught up, almost, with last year 2 weeks ago. I did adjust the brightness and contrast cuz it was horribly bright out; that is why the photos seem so colorful.)

I hope everything is kosher and no rabies. Have a wonderful weekend! I hope the sun shines some time this weekend.

oooh wowie! we have those here too but I've never seen one in person...lets hope he passed away from old age and not something horrible like rabies.

Everything is turning green here too and growing! it's so nice to see lush trees and grass again.

Wow...how bizarre. Hope he was just old.

Baasha looks great.

That boar isn't that big compared to the ones we get here that weigh as much as a horse. BUT, regardless of the size, you do NOT want to come across them alive. They are MEAN and can seriously hurt you. They aren't afraid of anything.

The photo with a helpful arrow to "Dead Pig Here" really made me laugh out loud, thanks. :)

Pig = yikes!

I'm jealous of your grass, though.

Wild pigs in South Texas are something to run from. I'm surprised he's so intact - are there no vultures there? He'd have been picked to pieces there in ten minutes.

Baasha looks great - how is his eye doing?
