Doesn't come when called....and HEAT!

WE HAVE HEAT!

I can't get over how wonderful it is to be warm again, and to walk around my entire house and feel it. I keep touching our radiators, warming my hands on the wonderful heat.

Karneval was to blame. The propane company was seriously understaffed by all the employees getting into costume and going out Mardi-Gras'ing. Nothing was broken here, and we had ordered propane but they put the holiday first.

When the truck drove up, I yelled at the propane guy, "You are here to rescue us! We are so tired of being cold!"

The man came in to check our furnace and he saw our fireplace and said, "That is not giving out much heat!" (We are kind of amateurs about firemaking.)

Then the man caught me taking a picture of his propane truck and he said, "Oh, you really can't believe I'm actually here!" *lol*

I gave him two slices of warm buttered banana bread as a thank you.

Hay Day

Carsten showed up, woo!, with our next load of hay. I thought I'd thank him with warm buttered banana bread as well, so as my man ran out to help with unloading, I was busy spreading butter (butter that lives on a countertop but had been rock hard from our cold kitchen until today!).

Finally I took the carefully wrapped warm bread out to his Audi* and lay it on the passenger seat. Then I went to help.

(* - He delivers hay from his horse trailer, which is pulled by an Audi. I know, Europe is weird.)

As I walked toward the barn, I was shocked by a very dreaded sight. Baasha was helping himself to freedom.

My man had propped open our gate (our gate swings closed automatically, making it nearly impossible to lose a horse). My man had not thougth that Baasha would just leave. As soon as Baasha saw that no one was there (my man was in the loft to catch hay), he made his escape.

The look on Baasha's face was priceless. He was utterly delighted. Free of restraint, eyes beaming, he sauntered out.

I gasped and ran to him, throwing my arms around his neck. He hadn't got far. I said, "BACK!" and for a moment, Baasha thought, "Screw you, I'm free!" and he glanced around for options. But then with all this deep snow (and a huge snow hill we'd made just this morning in front of the gate to allow us to unload hay better), he couldn't maneuver away from me. He relented and backed up, his dream of exploring our neighborhood alone was destroyed.

The gate was still open and I had to get a halter. Carsten had my back, and wasn't gonna let Baasha out again. Baasha was in play mode and didn't want me to halter him, but he could see my seriousness and gave up.

Into the stall, door locked, now we could work.

I called up to my man in the loft, "What were you thinking?"

He said, "What? I thought he would stay here, like a dog. And if not, you haven't done a very good job training him!" (He was kind of kidding.)

I said, "Baasha loves dumping me and running off. Usually in the middle of Maple Valley Highway or Des Moines Memorial Drive. He does not come when called."

Geez. (But honestly, in this neighborhood, he'd be hard pressed to get into trouble. Nearly all the neighbors are horse saavy, and there is no barbed wire near us anymore.

Warmth

For as long as we were without propane, (since Wednesday), I am going to keep talking about how happy I am to be warm. And I'm one of those people who cannot stand summer, and much prefer the cold. But I couldn't even take a shower.

Tonight I just stood in the shower and it felt like one of those "after camping trips" showers, where the warm water feels like heaven.

We sat there on our Ikea chairs and watched the final fire go out in our wood stove.

Now it's snowing, but it just looks that much prettier from inside sitting next to this warm radiator. We've got our hay, we've got our propane, and no worries.

Piano Snow

Unbeknownst to my man, I recorded him playing piano the other day.

Huge virtual prizes go to the person who can correctly name the song he's playing. Hint: popular 80s radio song. Hint #2: Theme stolen from David Bowie?

I love how the music got darker and darker as more and more snow fell. (He had no idea.)

I am so blessed to have a piano playing husband! After the years of loathing the forced daily lessons, I should add. I love piano, just not with me trying to play.

I thought the song was so pretty, and assumed it was some German song, but when I asked, I did not expect this answer. It's a very popular American band, but look, what I did not expect - it's pretty. It's passionate. I love dark music. Does anyone recognize this one? As I uploaded it, I found out it's all over youtube, but usually with guitars.

The first one is Major Tom by Shiny Toy Guns. Couldn't get the second one, although it's so familiar.

Glad you are warm again!

It's wonderful music (but i have no idea what it is)! You are so fortunate to have built in musical entertainment.

I know how you feel about the propane truck delivery - we had run out of propane during a rare Texas ice storm. The roads were solid sheets of ice but they managed to help out a few of us who had run out unexpectedly.

I nearly promised to name our next pet after the driver, but I thought it might not be accepted as a compliment since we were planning on getting a mouse.

I fully intend to make my (future) child take piano lessons, just so I can hear live piano music in my home. The only thing I can play is the "They hate this!" plinking tune from Ghostbusters.

I was thinking today how I wish I had a horse like Trigger, the kind that comes when called and stands ground tied perfectly. Oh well!

Glad you're warm!

Heat is a wonderful blessing indeed, when you have been without it. We are often without power due to storms but we have a wood stove that gets the place toasty warm.

Those videos were wonderful, the piano is one of my favorite instruments. I could listen to that all day!

I'm so tired of snow and so are my kidlets. After the 5th or 6th snowstorm, they refuse to even go out and go sledding or build a snowman. We are ready for summer...and lots of time outside to play, letterbox, geocache, and go riding!

How romantic to be able to sit inside, cozy and warm while your man serenades you whilst the snow falls outside. He's very talented!

Yeah, I got "Major Tom" but not the second one...it sounds really familiar.

Naughty Baasha! Toad was a dump-'em-and-leave-em guy too. Fiddle comes when called by her full name "Fiddle Wanna Cookie".

You and your sn*w. We've been frantically pruning the fruit trees this week, because Spring is trying to arrive early here!

Dang! He's good!

I don't hear Major Tom at all, but the second one has hints of "Nights in White Satin"?

Heat is a wonderful thing! How big is your home? If it's small and the woodstove didn't do the trick, makes me wonder if there's any insulation at all in the walls??

Naughty Baasha! On the couple of times that Corky would turn on a dime, and leave me on the ground for change, in the middle of nowhere, Montana woods, he would always return to see if I was okay--never had to walk home.

wv= abletsme ... "Baasha abletsme think I'm in charge, except when I'm not."

I so felt for you being cold! Our furnace crapped out this past fall on Thanksgiving of all days. Rather than pay the huge holiday repair surcharge, we opted to wait until Monday. All I can say is, thank goodness for modern living. Totally there with you on the fireplace--like, "why isn't this thing warmer?!?"

The image of Baasha skipping off to freedom made me smile...Arabians are so smart!

Leah, you really had me worried there for a minute with this Shiny Toy Guns thing. But I figure you must have just done a quick internet search to come up with the artist, and that was the first one you found. (The alternative was that I felt really old and out of touch.)

Coyote, that is a great story. I had to tell my man, I was laughing so hard. I felt your pain!

Funder, can you believe, I've never seen Ghostbusters? When I was little, I was not allowed to, and I never really got around to it. Major cultural hole.

Donna, we need to learn the secret of man's fire. Warm fire.

Melissa, I can't set him in front of the piano and force a song out, it doesn't work at all. But when he gets in the mood, I feel so blessed!

Lisa, my man said there are lots of new caches out there, but under all that snow, there is no way.

Aarene, I want snowshoes!

NM, I will tell him you said that. He would have stopped playing right away if he knew I was taping!

Evensong, he mixed Major Tom up a bit at that point, getting all creative. Our home is tiny, but so are our pieces of firewood.

Horseypants, thank God for self-closing gates, or else he'd have been outta here many times.

Gina, I did not know about the bastard children until this post. Geez! But the fun thing is - it's actually a German song, written and sung in German, originally. Later he did an English version that we all know. My man was so shocked to hear the English version for the first time this week!

Sonja, YOU WIN! But you're no Metallica fan, I don't think. I think you just know your brother's entire playlist. BTW, I have Moonlight Sonata open all the time (that page in the book), hoping he'll try to play it for me. It's a hard one.

Hahah, in that case I have to explain. Bill Murray's character is "investigating" a lady's condo for ghosts. He lifts the lid of a piano, then bangs the two highest keys a couple of times. The skeptical owner gives him a look, and he explains "They hate this!"

Banging two keys is about as much as I can do with a piano!
