It snowed again last night. I had to shovel my way to the barn this morning. Good thing it's really close. I love the snow, as long as I have nowhere to go. And especially now, when my man is on vacation.
The house is cleaner than it's ever been, and all the Christmas stuff is put away. The laundry is done, woodstove is cleaned out, and I even dusted! I hate dusting. My man did some things around the house that needed doing for a long time. We inspired each other! I vacuumed and dusted the inside of the car too, but the outside is unrecognizable as a car.
We played Settlers of Catan (Cities and Knights Extension) until way past midnight. I just can never win that game. (Or any game against my man that involves skill *sob*.)
I decided to start my coffee habit again (coffee as diet aid), and last night I made a big pot of German soup called "Midnight Soup". I had high hopes from the photo on the recipe, but it's basically just a rich tomato soup full of pearl onions. We had it for breakfast too cuz I hate breakfast and prefer to eat dinner three times per day.
Monochrome World
I can hear it inside Baasha's head. "Inconceivable!" as he stands just outside his stall, watching the silent, frozen world. It is gorgeous but unpleasant for him. The horses across the street are pawing through the snow to eat. They say the temp will drop to -10 this week so the second blanket is going back on him.
For refreshment, I perused my photo directory from last May. My goodness what a glorious springtime we have here!
For fun, I went around and took photos today from the same perspective as photos captured last May. (Or, I tried to get the same shots. It's harder than it looks!) It really is fun! I encourage you to try the same thing - but as a hint, take the actual photos outside with you when taking the comparison shots, so you can see exactly where you stood before. I obviously did not do this. A hand-written description of each photo did not suffice.
January VS. May
Try to figure out which photos were taken today, and which ones in May. It's not easy.
Only the most observant will be able to discern the subtle differences that make January different from May in NRW, Germany. *ROTFL* (That last pair is NOT a mistake!)

Wow! Isn't it amazing that a landscape can be so transformed by the seasons. Brilliant idea, I may have to have a go. The 'green' photos made me long for summer again. Your house is so beautiful, and so German! Max has the same look on his face as Baasha. They are so fed up with snow now.
There will be more snow on saturday. Much more snow. If I were you, I would go to the grocery store today and buy everything I need for five days. They haven't got enough salt anymore to prepare the streets.
Just heard that in the news...
Luv,
Sonja
That is incredible - we don't see that kind of dramatic change here at all. Except for when the worms show up. They are little moth larvae and in the spring they hang from all the trees like a Halloween decor gone awry.
The snow looks much, much nicer.
Everyone seems to be getting snow! Love the pictures!
We don't have any sn*w here, but I think I'll try your experiment and take some photos for comparison! Great idea.
Baasha is right.
-10 = inconceivable!
Great comparison photos. That must have taken some time looking for old photos and taking the same shots many months later. Coffee as a diet aid? Coffee just makes me hungrier.
What a great idea with the comparison photos. Your farm is picture perfect in every season!
What a wonderful post! I loved seeing the photos to compare!! Thanks for taking the time to do this.
What a gread idea about taking photos of the same things in the different seasons!
It is cold isn't it. Im kind of over the snow now. We've still got it all over the ground and it will be here for awile with all the cold temps.
Stay warm my friend!
You definitely get four seasons there, don't you! At least there's no mud right now? ;)
That is amazing! You almost feel yourself actually getting colder as you view the changes. And you long for the summery pictures that fill you with warmth. Beautiful scenery though in both seasons. Very dramtic - like Eastern Washington exactly. It was great talking to you. Love, Mom
I WANT MAY!!!
Hey, you forgot some photos. The ones of the neighbouring yard where winter is bleak cold snow but warmer months bring naked dope-fueled hippies. Please prepare for next year's post on this subject.
Coffee as diet - I'd inject caffeine but for the stigma of needle marks on my arms!
Autumn Mist, thank you! i hope other people try it too, the jan vs. springtime thing.
DasEes, you were right. my gosh, the people at aldi. so stressed! i kept smiling at everyone, like "hey, cheer up! it could be worse!" geez, grouchy germans!
Breathe, i'll never forget the time seattle got sprayed for the gypsy moth. i went to my first town meeting, in an effort to stop the pesticide planes. they said when they dump the chemicals, you should stay in your homes with your windows shut. i was like HUH! no way, that cannot happen. going to that meeting, protesting, it didn't help. i'll never forget the day that airplane came and sprayed over my yard. what a weird feeling that was! do you get those too?
Kate, thanks. go for it, do you have pics from last spring/summer?
Aarene, and to think, the worst was still to come. today is an actual blizzard! sideways snow all day long, drifting up in hills everywhere. i keep using our new shovel, so much fun! i wanna do a calvin and hobbes snowman scene. but my man is workin on a sick computer and that takes priority over snowman scenes.
NM, coffee makes you hungry? weird! it is an appetite suppressant for me. and i won't be able to sleep all night, probably. goodbye white teeth..
Melissa, thank you, i encourage you to do a january vs. spring/summer photoshoot as well! it is so fun!
FV, really? thank you! your yalla! forehead was a jan vs. spring shot!
Sonya, tired of the snow already? i say, let it come, for january. feb and march, though, i want rain again.
Funder, finally i get my four seasons. no mud to be found, i love it!
Mom, thanks for reading. you mean the pretty part of eastern washington, i hope. with the apple trees and german city?
Keia, i knew you'd say that! and hey, wasn't this your idea? it seems to me i've seen these season comparison photos before on your blog. yes, that seems familiar..btw, i told my man what you said "you can come visit us in march, when we can actually go outside" and he laughed and laughed. are you feeling a little bit fed up keia?!
WHP, i have this urge to go thru the fence now and explore #72, i'm so curious about it. it is completely abandoned now, haven't seen a sign of a hippy for a long time.

It' looks beautiful there, in May and January. I think I would like that Midnight Soup. Yum, I love tomato soup. How much bread do horses eat in Germany? What kind of bread? And why do they get fed bread?
once upon an equine, who would have guessed horses eat all sorts of bread here! i cannot even say what type they mostly eat - perhaps the ubiquitous "brotchen" - small rolls that germans usually eat for breakfast? or normal wheat bread slices, that are stuck on the radiator to dry out?
did you know, baasha has finally learned it!? this week i have been "cooking" him some bread on the radiators, and he loves it! it's a warm crackery treat. he's german now!
at first he only looked at bread sideways like "ok, that's human food! where's the carrot!?"
now he's munching it. it's so odd. there is a myth that you should never feed bread unless it's been dried first, but then i read that it is only a myth. but bread really is not so healthy for horses. it's so starchy. so he only gets some when we have a few end pieces we don't want.
you should see what horses eat here as their MAIN meals. my goodness, the stench.
