I took the blanket off to see how Baasha's doing under there and I started taking pictures.This first one, he wasn't sure I didn't have a carrot for him. I love it!
Then Baasha got all shy.
"Are you photographing my butt!? Would you let someone photograph yours without a blanket?""No. But you're a horse, the loveliest of God's creatures. No other species can hold a candle to you."
(But honestly, I haven't seen his butt this rounded in years.)
I love the differences I see in him now, comparing Summer to Summer, comparing it to Spring. Amazing.
He had "pointy butt" in December 2008.
I tried to get a shot that would show a comparison. This shot shows how he carries his weight, and it's easy for me to track.December, 2009.
I'll try to get some better comparison shots as time goes on.
But my sister in law Sonja is right. When Baasha is confined to a stall, whether it be for eye issues, or blizzards, he eats a lot more. He's up to a bale every other day. My goodness!
Playing in Snow
We tried to get pics of him playin in the snow, and he just didn't have that same attitude he'd had with me earlier this week (which actually scared me!).
My man and I took him to his field, and he ran away to the very furthest point. He became smaller and smaller, until he was a tiny grey speck on a huge white palette. I said, "Oh, he'll come running back!"
And he did. And then we played a bit. He likes to come running straight at me, so I carry his halter and rope in my hand, in case I need to shoo him away from me.Sadly, it was dusk, and the pictures turned out blurry. Next time, daylight hours!

Love the blurry, playing horse! He certainly isn't getting fat - a few ribs are just visible, but he's looking really good - it's great that you are feeding him that much with the cold weather you've been having.
I think he looks healthy...I love the blurry shot of Baasha so cool.
My rule of thumb for buying hay is 1/2 a bale per day, per horse. Of course they don't always eat that much, but by following that rule I have never run short of hay before the pasture grass was ready!
I love that bottom pic, even if it is a little blurry. A camera is a brilliant way of checking on their condition, isn't it? One day I'll put on the pics of how skinny Zak was when he came to us, scary to look at now.
Kate, I am in this weird balance because I don't want him to stress his old joints. But I don't want him to be thin.

Lulu, Honestly? You feed that much? I think that unlimited is best, but when I see what it actually amounts to....I'm amazed lately.
1/2 a bale a day seems like a lot...but I know when we are in camp at Renegade and the horses were either working on trails with us or confined to their paddocks, they eat about 4 times as much hay as they do at home, because there's no grazing. Plus beetpulp! Egad.
It seems like a lot of food, but they work so hard it's needful.
I'm delighted to see the shape of Baasha's butt this year. Good for you--and good for him!

I like the blurry photo's...nice.
Wa can eat 6 flakes in her overnight stall...depends on how cold it is.Takes her 10 hours or so.She generally eats 5-7 lbs...and we are riding too.
If your bales are 2 strand...that is easy to accomplish.

I love a round butt on a horse! You are definitely not alone in your appreciation of equine ends.
Also I give the thumbs up to Lulu's rule of thumb--especially since the weather has been freezing the aforementioned butt, and I like to feed extra instead of blanketing.

Now that is what an old horse should look like. He looks amazing! Are you sure you're not sneaking off and riding dressage and not telling us about it?
Tell Baasha that is a very nice butt and it's a shame to cover it under a blanket. He is blossoming in Germany!
