We have sheep!

This morning after church we got a visit from the shepherd, and took him for a tour of our field so that he can bring his sheep flock here. He is such an interesting man, in looks and accent, I simply have to get a photo of him for my blog. He dresses like a character out of a book written in the 1920s.

I felt pretty spiffy myself, in church clothes and big rubber boots covered in mud. Yah, make up and muddy boots!

After lunch with the family I raced home to see the sheep. They were already here! Where was my horse? In his stall, of course, it was raining. I put my muddy boots back on and haltered him. I practically skipped down to the ponds with him, he was dragging his feet cuz of the pouring rain.

"What til you see this Baasha!"

As we turned the corner and looked up at the field, which was dotted with white cottonball sheep, Baasha was so shocked. Not afraid, just shocked. He didn't snort or pull back, he just stood there staring, not believing his eyes. The shepherd was still putting up sheep fence and his black dog was keeping the sheep organized while he worked. I released Baasha and Baasha pranced nervously up a few yards, then stopped, and posed pretty as a picture, tail up, staring. No snorting, good boy! He may have been just as concerned about the shepherd as the sheep, he dresses so odd.

I stood like a statue in the rain for about 20 minutes, just watching. I was so curious about sheep society.

Baasha finally dropped his head and started grazing, but inched his way closer and closer to the sheep. They ignored him. When the shepherd saw me, we waved, but I stayed far away cuz I didn't want to disturb him.

The shepherd and his dog finally left. It was getting dark but I heard our gate latch and knew he was leaving for the night. It was cool to see all hundred or so sheep stare at him as he left. Almost forlornly. I started creeping closer.

About 40 meters away I got a whiff of Petting Zoo. That is the only other place I've smelled that before. I think all 100 or so sheep need baths.

One sheep was on the wrong side of the fence! He is with Baasha! But he's totally scared of Baasha. I got close and he ran from me too, bleating to his friends. They weren't really grazing, they chewed their cuds and stood around. One sheep, swear to God, was lying down on his front end and standing up in the back. Weirdy!

The sheep would not aproach me, but I was moving so slow they did not run away. One looked geriatric and let me get close to her. She was so fat and slow, and when she shook, so much rain flew out of her coat, it was like a dog after a bath.

I wonder if Baasha will come in tonight, or if he'll just hang with the sheep.

I'll try to get pics tomorrow when we have daylight.

What fun! I wonder if sheep are amusing as goats...? Can hardly wait to hear your stories.

How long will the sheep be staying?

How FUN! It's nice that you picked animals that will compliment your horse's coloring.

Of course everything goes with white, right?

I believe you are officially a ranch now. :)

oh, sadly the sheep are only here for a few days: ( i know, i wished for a few weeks!

but the shepherd says that the sheep go thru the grass and then they stand at the fence and gaze at the next field longingly. he says they are as picky as horses, only eating the tender young grass and ignoring our long tufts. *snap* oh well!

this is another way for us to be part of our community, letting our neighbor shepherd use our field. we even told him the combo to our gate lock!

if it's nasty tomorrow, i'll bring him some tea in a thermos.

and ask him all about sheep.

and hope i understand his accent.

How fun for Baasha to have a change in his daily routine for awhile.

I like to look at sheep, but I can't stand the way they smell. I have also never been able to eat lamb or mutton because to me, it tastes just as bad as they smell when they're alive.

Looking forward to pics. When I went to school in England, my roommate dated a shepherd. I always thought that was so funny.

I want sheep - I am jealous! Please take some pictures and post them. :) Our goats are very picky grazers, and picky about hay as well. When we put hay down for the fainters at night it amazes me what they won't eat. Gorgeous hay that a horse would hoover up and they just pick through it.
