It was such a novelty to me to have sheep here, I took lots of video clips of them. Especially the lamb. One of the vids shows the sheep being rough on our Tposts, and you can hear the shepherd talking in the background. Thankfully our Tposts survived being used as scratching posts, probably because we rammed them all a meter into the ground. I learned a lot about sheep and it turns out they're picky eaters just like horses. They ignored all but the youngest blades of grass. Our field is thoroughly fertilized and also aerated by their pokey little feet. The areas where the sheep were will get a nice long rest now!

Love that baby lamb! Those have pretty sheep when we were in Ireland came upon a ton of Sheep and I was so bummed for my pictures because their ass ends were painted red and I think some were blue not sure why..it was quite a sight.
Great videos! Have you noticed that sheep don't say 'bah'? They say 'Meh'. Goats say 'beh' or 'neh'.

frau, yes i saw some blue paint on some sheep. i forgot to ask why!
lisa, i just asked my man what is the sound sheep make in german, and he said "meh": ) cool! you're right!
I was wondering about the whole 'nomadic' thing. Are all sheep such picky eaters and need to be moved or can they be "trained" to stay in a pasture for any length of time?
I have a few friends that have sheep so I'll have to ask them what they do with their sheep.
Ok, yall, here's the sheep dye explanation.
When they turn a ram out into a flock of ewes, the shepherds want to know when the ram has finished the task so he can move on to next flock. So they paint his chest with a mix of colored dye and grease or oil. As time passes, the ewes end up with colored blobs on their backs...
Frau, I bet they put two rams out with the flock you saw!
How on earth do I know such crazy things? I read a really good dog blog, by an animal behaviorist who has herding Aussies! And a herd of sheep!
Lytha, I remembered to take a picture of Dixie's pasturemate's weird foot. He had a coronet band injury as a youngun and his hoof has grown a groove ever since.
Also I totally spelled your name wrong on the Flickr picture, and I'm rather embarrassed, and I bet I will remember in the future!
Lytha had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb, Lytha had a little lamb, it's fleece was white as snow...
cdncowgirl, remember when we first bought this place and like the next day, i found this same herd of sheep in my field? boy was i mad! in my mind that was trespassing! but i had to learn that in germany, sheep have rights to use fields unless there is a no sheep allowed symbol (a straw puppet). most land owners don't mind, some are anti-sheep, preferring to mow or mulch, the shepherd told me.
the shepherd used a fence to keep them contained at night, and during the day there was a sheep fence along the farside to keep them from falling into our ponds. (i actually checked the next day for floating wooly bodies!) and all day long he watches and the dog kept them back from the road, cuz after 2 days our field was not tasty anymore, and they wanted out! the next day they were on a beautifully mown, deep green field, just down the street. they will keep going, making rounds of this town all year, he said. he also said he couldn't use the field across the street from us, because they had it sprayed with manure recently and that would not be healthy. interesting!
funder, that was a great story, interesting vid, but it doesn't explain why there was a bright blue stripe painted on that newborn lamb; ) dang, i wish i'd asked! i know there were several males in the group, and i did see some breeding. i was trying to pet them; the shepherd was directing me to the 9 year olds that are nice enough to allow it, but they wouldn't let me! then he pointed out one male that was staring at me, and said "that one attacked my son" and i was so glad i didn't get attacked!
thanks for taking that pic of the coronary band injury/crack. it does look like baasha's crack. so, he'll never be a foot model for a hoof care product in a magazine, *sigh*.
oh, and aren't those border collies on that site you sent me to?
i asked the shepherd if he'd seen "that movie with the talking border collies that herd sheep, and a pig that thinks he's a border collie" (you never know what movie titles are in german, hehe) and he laughed and said yes. love that movie! and now i've seen how sheep react to a single bark of a dog, they move!
nm, nothing cuter than a newborn lamb frisking about!!
Do the farmers pay you to allow their sheep to come in a graze or is it like a friednly gesture to allow that?
The baby lamp is my favorite. I want to squeeze and then run before the mom comes after me..lol
I wonder if the lamb just bounced around and wobbled up against the ram's chest?
Those probably are BC's, yeah. I am good on retrievers and not so good on herding breeds. They're not Lassies, and they're not OE Sheepdogs, so I just guessed another herding dog type!
If you look at" postcards from arizona" blog there is a cute sheep clip of sheep there.
anonymous, i have seen that video before "extreme herding" but i just don't believe it. ok parts of it are obviously real, but i think they used a smart connection of sheep and computer technology.
