Finally in the snow club!

Finally! I've been checking the weather report every day, hoping for those snow flake days to come soon!

I was sitting here at this laptop, when the sky turned that odd grey/yellow color that means snow. At exactly noon, I got my snow: ) What you would all call a "dusting" I think. I ran right outside.

Baasha seemed grouchy about it, but curious too. We've never had snow with our horse home!

We stood in his stall together, watching it come down.

"Oh no, it's coming in my stall!"

"This is a really great day to just stay inside, don't you think? Can you put the camera away for one moment?"

This is Baasha's naptime, but I couldn't leave him alone: )

OK I left him alone when I pushed the wheelbarrow to the manure box. But then I had to stop and take more pics cuz our hang looked so pretty.

This is the first time in my life I have had nowhere to go (no job), and my horse at home in Winter. And with only one horse, it's really really easy. I just run the water cooker several times a day, so that he can drink luke-warm water. (It turns out that really works. I had no idea cold water bothered him, but every time I heat up the water, he drinks!)

The pasture trough required special measures. Our trout stunning hammer has another purpose now! I don't think Baasha drinks it, but I break the ice out everyday anyway. See, I'm in the "Breaking Ice Out of Troughs Club" too! More than ever, Baasha just wants to be in his stall munching hay. But he gladly grazes a few hours a day.

I couldn't resist a little ride in the snow today, and I let Baasha pick where we went. I love the peace of snow rides, and the snow is very dry and powdery, easy to walk in. I kept stopping him to take pictures, but he was in no hurry today.

"She won't let me eat grass, and yet we are just standing here."

An acquaintance opened her window and shouted across her field at us, "How are you? Are you enjoying the snow?" I told her the weatherman was wrong, and I'm out taking pics! She said she'd be out riding tomorrow. She owns a pretty bay Paso mare.

Long swaths of sunlight cut through the woods making stripes on the ground. I could not capture that with my camera *sigh*.

I finally got Baasha to stand in one of those sunlight patches.

We saw a cat hunting moles, he stood poised for a very very long time with one front paw cocked under his body ("pointing" at his game?). We watched him until he finally moved, and I noticed two other cats out in snowy fields hunting today.

What a great holly tree!

Happily the neighbors let their horses back out on pasture, because the ground is frozen and they can't do damage. (I always wonder how it affects their metabolism to suddenly go back on grass like that.) I love seeing them out front again. I missed them! You can tell which one is the Icelandic in this photo, cuz they always have such fuzzy but short forelocks. I like how it looks we live on Tatooine here, a planet with two suns.

Now it's 3 PM and the sun is shining golden, and there are tiny flakes coming down. Nils and his friends are screeching in their yard, throwing snowballs at each other. Baasha is out grazing.

This is the pond we emptied and cleaned in September, and it is so clear you can see the bottom. I fed our fish but they aren't really that hungry - it's the weather. We're not supposed to feed them as often in Winter, but I can't help myself and I snuck them a meal today.

We didn't get any accumulation, but maybe later this week.

Yay! Thanks for sharing these beautiful pics & glad you got your snow! We got a teeny last Sunday, just enough to make driving no fun...and now it's just WET! Sounds like Baasha's living the good life this winter! :)

I loved the video of Baasha. I could see him start to snore at one point, and then you must've wiggled and he woke up more!

I'm so happy that you got such lovely snow! Thanks for the pictures - I'm excited with you.

Fingers crossed that you get just enough beautiful lovely snow to stay happy, and not so much you get stuck in the house and totally grumpy about the horrible evil sn*w!

Cold foods and liquids are harder for humans to digest, so I'd guess the same is true of Baasha and the cold water. :-)

This is precisely how I like to experience snow - through a blog. :D

Beautiful photos, Lytha. It's like a wonderful postcard.

Lovely photos. We got 5-6 inches last week here in central Washington, but then it warmed up again, and most of it is gone. I guess we'll have a "sorta white" Christmas!

Have you thought of tank heaters for your troughs? Or even just a heated bucket for Baasha's stall. Wonderful time savers, and then he could drink whenever he wanted. Lots of options in mail-order/on-line catalogs, though I'm not sure of the electric conversion issues...
