Sundays in My City

I have wanted to participate in this weekly photo theme for a while now, so here goes.

Sundays in My City mean churchbells. Actually, OK, everyday here means churchbells.

But Sundays mornings have lots and lots of chuchbells ringing. It is the sound of Germany.

We took a walk to the nearest old church, and I was impressed as usual, I love these old German churches. This one is really tucked away between houses, and hard to get far enough away from the get a pic of the whole church.

Impossible, actually.

The date the church was built is on the wall. Wait, that is not very old for a church in my city!

When God draws a big X over your church in the clouds, I think you have to be worried. Or, the opposite? hehehehee

I was like, "Check out that big X above this church!" 99 out of 100 churches in Germany have a rooster on the steeple. This one has a swan. One day we will visit a church service here. Can't wait to see inside!

Our one hotel. It looks expensive. And denkmal geschutzt (on the historic register of old buildings that cannot be altered). I love the classic German iron hanging sign out front.

It has horses on it.

The streets are so narrow, the cars have to take turns. Driving through, you almost hit your sidemirrors on the buildings on either side of the street. That is typical Germany too. (Aside: I find it odd that many homes have the street between their house and their garage or barn. I don't understand that, but I am guessing long ago it was not a through street, it was a driveway. I would hate to have to cross the street to visit my horse or my car. Three neighbors on our street have their gardens (yards) on the other side of the street from their homes. Makes it hard to figure out whose lawn is whose!)

It is uncomfortable for me to drive through here, with all the weird yielding rules and taking turns. I only go there with a car when I must, like when I have to visit the pharmacy, or when I need a grocery store that has garlic. (The Aldi nearer to us has no garlic because garlic is not considered a normal food item in Germany.)

Sundays in My City, most every business is closed, except restaurants. We went to the restaurant across the street from the hotel, and were greeted by a solid wall of cigarette smoke. Nice. There are new laws in Germany that for smoking to be allowed in restaurants, they must provide a separate room for smokers. Somehow, amazingly, restaurants have redefined the law to mean smoking is allowed everywhere EXCEPT a tiny separate room. Which no one uses, so it had the heat off. And when you want to go to the bathroom, you have to run through the smoky area.

We got our heater on, and had this tiny closed up room to ourselves, and we tried to have fun. At the bar we could hear a bunch of old men playing a drinking game with dice. I found that charming.

I love the mural on the wall, it reminded me of my grandmother's paintings.

We told the waitress we are new in town, and we are trying out new restaurants. In my city, going to restaurants is not something you do very often, so you have to find a good one, and then treat yourself about once or twice per month. I gave the place a 10 for its dim romantic lighting, and the second wine I tried (Dornfelder) was really good. (The first one I actually gave back to her.) For dinner I had Bergisches Schnitzel, a pork schnitzel fried and then baked with cheese and onions and bacon on top. Yah, pork with pork on top. That was pure German goodness!

For a little green, here is the local golf course. I would say I must ride my horse across it, but I have already done that (back home) and I'm all good: )

Golfing is allowed on a Sunday in My City. We have a beautiful golf course here, I hope my parents come play someday.

On the way home I tried to get a pic of a single garden gnome, cuz Germans really are fond of their garden gnomes, but they were all inside hiding or something! Silly camera-shy garden gnomes! Sorry, next time!

Riding on a golf course is good, but my dream has always been to plant pumpkin seeds near the greens....does that make me a bad person?

I can't wait to see the garden gnomes! My friend Kristi is in Germany working as a missionary right now. She has had to get used to so many things that are different than they are here in the states. I LOVE your hotel sign. Very cool! I also love the architecture. The small streets would totally freak me out! Sometimes when driving in Philadelphia I have to go down small one way streets and it is STRESS inducing for certain. So glad you participated. Nice to meet you!

Very wonderful Lytha! I enjoyed peeking into the window of what your city looks like. What a treat!
But I must know why you don't grow your own garlic?
Was your hubby giving you a smooch in that romantic photo? hehe!
