Disadvantage of a soft mane

I fell off Baasha! I haven't fallen off my own horse in years, and never before on pavement. Ouch!

But to my shame, I fell off in the second most foolish way possible. While getting on. Baasha was stationary the entire time. (The only more foolish way to fall off is to do so while dismounting.)

I hit pavement due to the overuse of Show Sheen. I am sure that has happened to a lot of us, right?

I had been talking to a new neighbor for a long time, and Baasha almost fell asleep as we got to know each other. Better than his usual fussy impatient brattiness. So I walked my half asleep horse up to the main street and right next to the bus stop I tried to get on. I didn't even take the reins in my hand (mistake, mistake!), I just swung aboard. Then something went wrong in my estimation of how big my horse is (not big) and I ended up with way too much impetus, and found myself swinging way too far. I reached for mane, but it was so well conditioned, it was like grabbing air. I fell right to the ground at his feet. He was sure shocked! I saw that pavement coming and it hurt as much as I knew it would.

Mostly it hurt my pride. About 4 houses have a good view of that spot. How many neighbors saw me fall off a motionless horse!?

I hobbled over to the bus stop shelter and sat down, hiding. Baasha checked out the bus schedule. Sorry, they only come ever 2 hours out here in the country!

Ouch! I expect your pride hurt more than your body!

Know the feeling.... last year I went to hop on on a sweet little Appy mare... hopped up and right on over... Pathetic! So next, I grabbed a plastic outdoor stool. Only it had been in the hot summer sun a few too many summers... and you guessed it.
I hopped a bit, and went to bounce up and onto the mare, and CRACK CRASH BAM... I fell right through the top. Wound up standing up to my knees inside the darn thing.

The horse was looking at me like I had lost my flipping mind. My in laws? Saw BOTH incidents, and had to go inside and mop up the mess they made from laughing so hard. And of course, call everyone and tell them about it.....

Kisses to Baasha, and I sure hope none of your neighbors got to see too much there! ;)

oops. The worst injuries I have ever suffered around horses was when I fell off the mounting block. Never even got on the horse. Very very embarrassing. I do sympathise.

OK, that was funny. Good of you to put it in a post for the world to know. LOL!! Good to hear that you didn't get hurt. Make sure that you put the show sheen on after you get on your horse. heehee.

I've always said that mounting and dismounting are our most vulnerable moments when riding. Your post gave me a chuckle, I'm sure Baasha couldn't figure out why on earth mommy fell off when he wasn't even moving!

Oooooooh, I am completely laughing my butt off (it's not gone yet, alas!)

I am very creative when it comes to getting on my taaaaaaaaalll horse, including getting her to stand in a ditch, getting her to stand next to a tractor or a stump, or a weird scary rock....and I try very hard not to fall off because it is a long way to the ground!

(still laughing...this could keep me going for several hours, thank you!)

LOL!

In the words of a famous moose, looks like you don't know your own strength!

At least you can all share a laugh at the next block party (do they have block parties?).

Oh no. That couldn't have felt good. I stopped using products that make my horse's back slippery, because the saddles would slide down their sides when I lunged them. My horse's coats don't look as shiny as they could, but then again, I don't show them anymore. I do put a lot of detangler in their manes and tails, though, so I'll have to keep in mind that I may need to grab that mane from time to time and can't if it's slippery.

Ha ha ha, I totally came off that way once! Got my horse so clean and beautiful one day that I didn't want to spoil it with a dirty saddle pad. I hopped on bareback. He spooked at a deer and leapt sideways out from underneath me. He was so slick, I actually landed on my feet, in the exact spot where he had been standing, with the reins still in my hand. It was so bizarre. Hope you are not too sore from the road rash.
