It's all yours, Baasha

This feels amazing. We have a fence. I finished it yesterday - it took me 7 hours! I'm pleasantly aching all over, and a little sunburned despite putting on sunblock twice. Can you believe it took me 7 hours to put up electric wire? Well, and to cut back nettles from under the fence with our sickle. And to take down the two grazing stripes - that took a while.

So much wire! (Electric rope actually, the 6 mm kind.) And I divided the field in half so we can continue to rotate, what seems really odd cuz it's just so huge for one horse.

I had to put up those long insulators on the wooden fence and my goodness could they make it any more labor intensive? Usually when you put an O-ring insulator on a fence, it has a screw-in end so you start with your power drill to make a hole, and then you screw it in with your hand. These long white things, oh my. I bought them cuz I thought they looked cool, (don't they?!) and they're 40 cm long so they create a really big distance between your horse and your valuable wood fence. Well they don't come with screw-in ends. You have to make the perfect sized hole with your drill, and the hammer them in. And then to keep them in, you have to put a horseshoe nail on it too. That's three steps! I do love our power drill; it was a fun part of my day putting those things on.

I stood back to look at our new fence and I was so amazed - it just looks so sharp and a little formidable cuz it's so high. As you can see, we couldn't have a pony with such a fence, he'd walk right under. This is to make it easy to trim back the grass. If and when we get a pony, another wire will have to be installed.

Finally when I turned Baasha out, the first thing he did was roll, twice.

The scratchy newly cut hay stalks must have felt really good on his back. If you look closely you can see a lawn chair in the background. That is our only lawn chair on the property, and I have it out in the pasture so I can sit there and stare at my horse while he eats. If anyone visiting us would like to sit down outside, they have to go down to the pond area and up into the pasture to find this lawn chair. It's really comfy too, and leans back if I want to doze. It's hard to doze cuz I have to share that chair with the bugs, for some reason bugs love the chair too.

Ah, horsefly!

Baasha says, "All for me?"

Then he trotted up to the street to see his new view. Our friendly neighbors had pulled up two lawn chairs so they could watch. How long had they been watching me as I toiled hour after hour? (They're our friends so it's not creepy.) Hills are so good for Baasha's old legs.

Now, a little rain would be nice to bring the green back!

I love our electric wire, but my least favorite chore is keeping the grass trimmed back!!! I actually use our mower to mow a strip along both sides, and then use the weed wacker for anything that is missed. It is a lot of work, but my fences look so nice when I'm done!

Looks great! All that grass should make it easier to keep weight on the old fella, too.

Hurray!

It looks great, Lytha, and I am sure that Baasha appreciates all of your hard work-well he would if he were a human. :)

Baasha is probably the luckiest horse in the world to have you for his owner! That looks great!

Oooh! That last photo should be enlarged and framed. So pretty! Baasha is one spoiled and well cared for horse. I'm sure he knows it, too. What a life.
Wow! Girl...what a job doing that fence. It looks amazing!

Laura - Thanks, and I did enjoy watching him trot and canter around today. He really can stretch out there!

Kirstin - We talked to the guy at church today who has lots of Shetlands and we'll try to get one on a trial basis this fall. If it's mean to Baasha, it has to go back.

Lulu - I just caught up on your blog and saw your entry about trimming under your fence. Let's hope I can stay this obsessive with appearances!

Aarene - Some rain these past few days helped a lot, I can't wait til it's green again.

Melanie - You're right - he doesn't appreciate the work we do.

Jacksonsgrrl - He does like to stand up on the tippy top of the highest hill and gaze all around him. Finally!

FV - It is a lot of space for one horse - we'll see about a second.

Lisa - Imagine if I had a YOUR camera! *sigh* Someday: )
