Baasha discovers his age

I left Baasha unsupervised on our front lawn with a "safety" rope over his back in case he spontaneously decided to try to find his way back home to Seattle. Our front lawn is fenced, but it's more of a suggestion than a horse-keeper-inner.

He was good, he stayed on the newly mowed lawn, and only one peach tree suffered from it. And maybe the cherry. Oops.

I love looking out my living room window and seeing him out there. He really should work on the edges more, though. All these pics were taken through glass, but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, despite a camera reflection in some of them. This one also has a little bird in it! I have no idea what kind of bird it is. He is saying to the other birds, "Hey look, I totally match this horse here!"

Baasha spies the horses across the street. Instead of getting excited, he just resumed grazing, whew: )

You might think Baasha was trying to look majestic in this photo. Just the opposite, he was shaking himself after rolling: )

Somehow he lay down, got up, and shook, and that rope stayed right where it was supposed to be the entire time. Cool.

Directly after rolling he jumped to his feet and looked around. I like the little windchimes in the photo. These are the windchimes I bought at Rockaway Beach, OR, and gave to my grandmother. She had them on her backporch until she died, and now I have them. They kind of broke on the journey here, but still chime very lightly in the wind.

Here's another one of the windchimes, and his brand too!

I had to yell at him thru the window, "Leave the cherry tree alone! It's not for scratching on!" Geez. Maybe the front lawn isn't such a hot idea. But it's just so charming to see him out there. Later he fell asleep out there and I finally put him away.

Today it rained so we dug trenches to lay geotiles in. My man and I each made a stretch of them, from the barn door, and down the path to the field. We didn't get too far before we were both exhausted and covered in mud from head to toe. Occasionally I'd pull Baasha over and make him walk up and down the path, to muddy it up for us. He thought it was the stupidest exercise ever, up and down, backwards and forwards, and then circles left, circles right, all in one spot. I kept telling him how good he is, but he couldn't fathom why we were doing such pointless things.

I brought this giant mirror outside cuz I thought it would be fun to have a big mirror in the barn. I know Baasha has seen a mirror before, in some arena or other, but apparently he'd forgotten. It was hi-lar-ious! IF ONLY I had that camera! He took a good look, puffed himself up, and then went totally rigid, leaning back on all four legs stiffly. For a moment, he hid behind my man for protection, then BAM he was outta there. He pranced himself away to safety from the horrible, horrible reflection he saw there. It was actually a gorgeous thing to behold! If only he knew. His eyes were so bewildered, his expression so becoming. Not terror, just a look like, "What The.." I just held it and he came around behind me to see the rest of the horse. Not there. I said "He lives in 2 dimensions." Baasha was so confused. I hung it over the table in the barn. He's calming down about it, but still makes pretty faces and steams his breath on it. Maybe he's surprised at how much he's aged since the last time he saw himself. Hm.

He's looking good these days, not too skinny at all! Very handsome, in fact.

Or perhaps he's thinking he looks darn good for his age!

I think his ribs might just show forever, *sigh* but it feels like he looks better now just watching him eat so much grass: ) I'm watching for the signs where he shows his weight differences (tailhead) and still see nothing. In lots of pics that I take he looks really malnourished - I just publish the good pics: )

He's made the switchover from grass pellet mash to beet pulp quite readily, so that's good. Wish he'd eat more hay, but he's too into the grass still I guess.

It sure is nice that he's alone, and I know *exactly* how much he eats and drinks everyday!

He really does look great, as though he's settling in well. It makes me mad when mind chew on our trees! They have free choice hay to supplement the grass, so they're not hungry. Look at any pix of my Boyz and you can see that. So why tear up the trees??
